Gary Neville    since Oct 98.

Gary Home Index

Gary Neville is a product of United's prolific youth team. Bury-born Gary, who's brother Philip is also in the first team squad, captained the club's 1992 FA Youth Cup-winning side. He made his England debut as right-back against Japan in the 1995 Umbro Cup.

Gary has played with four Junior teams. They are St Stephens Under 10s, Ice Juniors Under11s, Bury Juniors Under 12s, 13s, 14s, and 15s, and finally Boundary Park Under 16s.

Gary made his debut, aged 17, as a substitute in UEFA cup tie v Torpedo Moscow in September 1992, managing to solve United's right back problem after injury to Paul Parker and a loss of form from David May. Gary made his Man Utd League debut against Coventry at old Trafford on May 8th 1994. Gary made hi England debut against Japan in the 1995 Umbro Cup.

Gary has expressed that he doesn't want people to think that he and his brother are boring because they keep reading about these two brothers who play for Manchester United and England, who have got a sister, Tracey, who plays netball for England and parents who are involved in football at Bury.

Gary's favorite position is in central defence. He feels so much happier when he plays there because he thinks that it's his best position and he thrives on the responsibility and the passing from there. He hopes that one day he will become a regular central defence player for Man Utd because at his opinion he's definitely at his best at that position.

Gary says that the best partner in defence he's played with is Chris Casper. They have played together since they were 16, even against experienced physical forwards like Mick Harford and John Gayle and still they kept them in their pockets. Maybe Gary would change his mind now that he's played so well with Jaap Stam.

Gary says that he's made a conscious decision that if he would have hung out with his schoolmates then he'd been drawn into going out at night and getting involved in things which would distract him from playing. He says that it was a selfish thing to do but he did it to concentrate on his football and it has really paid off. Now he got most of his friends through football like Beckham, Casper, Rawlinson and Gillespie....boys who live their life the same way as Gary.

Gary is a long time admirer of Man Utd and went always to Man Utd games with his father since he was four years old. They had a season ticket in the K-stand. When Gary was 11 years old, Saturdays were taken over with playing football but after he got 14 he started to receive tickets from the club and went when it didn't clash with his own football.

When Gary was younger, he was living a battle against all the Liverpool fans in his class. Even though the school was in Bury, they all supported Liverpool because they were the most successful team then. Gary used to argue that United were a better side, even though deep down he thought they weren't.

When Gary was once asked where he would like to be in five years time he said that he would like to be at United with 300 appearances under his belt, 50 England caps, couple of more Championship medals and FA Cup winner's medals and a European Cup winners medal.

Gary is an extremely fast runner and his determination to win every game is beyond belief. Gary also possesses a phenomenal long throw which he uses to great success to get United's attacks moving and set up United's equaliser in the 1995 FA Cup semi-final against Crystal Palace

Last season (97-98) Gary captained United for the first time against Sheff.Wed. Gary says that that was his greatest personal honour but modestly says that there are other players in front of him regarding the captaincy, the likes of Irwin, Keane, Ryan and Peter who were all injured in that match.

Gary Pallister once said in his Manchester Evening News column that Gary Neville would be the most likely of the young players to eventually become a manager. Gary Neville says that it used to be a dream of his, especially at Old Trafford. But now he says that it's hard enough to fight for his place at Man Utd and that's all he can think of at the moment.
