A bargain 20.000 pounds signing from Dublin- based Bohemians, Daly initially looked far too lightweight, took some time to adjust to the demands of English First Division football, and did not win a regular place with United until March 74. He experienced relegation in his first season but the disapointment was brief as UNITED bounced straight back by winning the Second Div title in 1974-5 with Daly`s energy, neat passing and powerfull shot an essential ingrediant of the promotion team. In the following term he scored FA Cup goals against Oxford, Leicester and Wolves to help THE REDS to Wembley, but second Div Southampton were the surprise winners in the final. When UNITED returned to Wembley 12 months later and beat Liverpool 2-1, Gerry Daly had departed OT two months previously. He had lost his place in the side to Jimmy Greenhoff, and his relationship with manager Docherty subsequently deteriorated to such an extent that he was transferred to Derby-for 175.000 pounds-in March 77. It was a most disappointing early departure for a player whose considerable talent and potential were never fully explored by UNITED. Ironically, Docherty followed him to the Baseball Ground in the summer of 1977, following his dismissal from UNITED. A truce was obviously declared, as Daly had a longer stay at Derby than Tommy Docherty, who resigned in May 79. In a career spanning 8 clubs, Daly made 472 appearances and scored 88 goals. Always a reliable man from the penalty spot, he netted 16 for UNITED from 17 attempts, which included 4 in 3 consecutive matches in 74-5.
