Peter Davenport was an amateur on Everton`s books as
a youngster, but he joined Nottingham Forest from
Cammel Laird, having failed to secure an engagement
at Goodison Park. He made a promising start to his
League career, scoring four goals in his first five games for
Forest. Although restricted by injury in 82-3 he was a regular
goalscorer in the seasons preceding his 570.000 pounds transfer
to UNITED to replace Barcelona bound Mark Hughes.
His start at OT was faltering; his record of one goal in his
first 11 games in 85-6 drawing inevitable comparisons with an
earlier Forest import, Garry Birtles, who had failed to find the
net in his first 25 matches in 80-1.
Happily, Davenport who had good close control and was quick on the turn
regained his goalscoring touch in 86-7, netting 14 goals. Under Alex
Ferguson, however, the return of Mark Hughes was followed within months by
Davenport`s transfer to Middlesborough. Ironically enough, his first goal
for his new club enabled them to beat UNITED by 1-0 at Ayresome Park in
Jan 89.
Transferred to Sunderland in July 90, he appeared in the FA Cup final of
1992, but was on the losing side as liverpool won 2-0. Peter Davenport
played once for England against the Rep of ireland in march 85. He was
also an England "B" International.
