He became proff at seventeen and made over 200 League appearances for the Gills, beginning in midfield before switching to central defence. Capped 8 times by England Youth, and an England B Int, he cost Norwich 135.000 pounds, assisting them to win the Football League Cup in 85, and the Div 2 Championship in 85-6. A fee of 825.000 pounds brought him to OT and he was unfortunate to suffer a broken nose on his debut! A strong tackling, determined defender with good aerial ability, Bruce was a commanding figure in UNITED`s defence, and a dangerous attacker from corner kicks and set pieces. An FA Cup winner in 90 and a European Cup Winners Cup winner and League Cup finalist in 91. He was a FL Cup winner against Notts Forest in 92 and was a typically influential and couragous captain during UNITED`s successsful FA Premier League Championship challenge in 92-3, in the continuing absence of Bryan Robson due to injury. His enthusiastic spirit and tremendous central defensive pairing with Gary Pallister was a foundation from which UNITED progressed to further Championship glory in 93-4 and 95-6. Officially handed the Captaincy in April 94, Steve then proudly lifted the FA Cup at Wembley the following month to complete Uniteds long coveted League and Cup "Double", an honour shared by only three othe league clubs this century. The feat was repeated in 95-96! Steve was granted a free transfer to Birmingham City June 96 after a fantastic career.
