In the following season he established a first team place as a twinkling winger of immense talent and promise, and scored the opening goal of the 76 League Cup final against Newcastle, which City won 2-1. He cost West Brom 650.000 pounds in July 79 and Leeds 930.000 two years later but it is fair to say, never truly fulfilled his great early potential. After a brief loan spell with Real Betis in Spain he left Leeds for a cut price fee of 65.000 to Coventry. Having made a brief loan spell to OT in May 84, Barnes signed for 50.000 in July 85, linking up again with UNITED manager Ron Atkinson, who signed him six years earlier for West Brom. UNITED began season 85-6 in stunning style with ten consecutive League wins, but their bold title challenge faded and Barnes, outstanding early on, lost his place in Nov and reappeared only once more during the season. When Alex Ferguson took over Barnes was quickly moved on, rejoining Man City for 30.000 in Jan 87. From that point on he assisted in numerous clubs at home and abroad, without capturing his earlier form. At the outset of his career he was capped by England youth, England B, England u21`s and went on to win 22 full England Caps. He was voted PFA`s Young player of the year in 75. In season 92-3 he worked for greater Manchester Radio, commentating on matches from Maine Road.
