FIRST TROPHY OF THE SEASON!
Friday, May 14, 1999 08:58
Michael Clegg became the first United captain since Denis Law, thirty-five years ago, to lift the Manchester Senior Cup following the Reds' 3-0 win over Oldham Athletic at Boundary Park last night (Thursday).
In fact this was the first time since then that United had entered the competition which gave them their first ever taste of success back in 1886.
It's fair to say that the re-emergence of the competition hasn't really been greeted with the enthusiasm that Manchester County FA officials would have liked, but at least it ended on a good note for United's young players who picked up a medal in what could well be the club's greatest ever season.
It was pouring with rain for much of the evening in Oldham, but that couldn't extinguish what turned out to be an entertaining occasion.
Less than a thousand supporters braved the inclement conditions (more than 35,000 watched United's final with Manchester City at Maine Road in 1964), but they weren't short-changed.
It was as they say, a match of two halves. The first was evenly balanced with both sides displaying a good appetite for the fray, but with no goals forthcoming.
The second half eventually belonged to United. They steadily took control of the proceedings and in the space of 60 seconds scored twice to pretty well end the game as a contest.
David Healy scored the first in the 60th minute after taking a pass from Mark Wilson and then before Oldham had time to regroup Luke Chadwick had sped through their ranks to hit United's second goal.
The victory, and the trophy, were clinched four minutes from time when Wilson made it 3-0.
Congratulations to Jim Ryan, Tony Coton, and all the staff and players concerned on winning the first trophy of the season.
