Subject: Van der Sar: United are out to get me
By Ken Lawrence
Tuesday, April 27, 1999
Edwin Van der Sar claims he is Manchester United's top
target to replace goalkeeper Peter Schmeichel.
The 28-year-old Holland and Ajax keeper was approached last
week. He said: 'Manchester United were in contact with me
to ask about my feelings and availability about joining
them if a transfer could be agreed between the clubs.
Obviously, I have to be interested.'
Van der Sar, who also interests Barcelona, will cost around
£5million, a British record for a goalkeeper. But United,
having paid £10.75m to capture fellow Dutchman Jaap Stam -
a world record for a defender - will not baulk at the fee.
However, it may be the only piece of major business that
manager Alex Ferguson does in the coming months after
chairman Martin Edwards' declaration that no other funds
would be available.
Aston Villa keeper Mark Bosnich was Ferguson's original
target but the Australian, who left United to return home
before re-establishing himself in the Midlands, wants too
much money. Roma were ready to sign a pre-contract
agreement with Bosnich whose contract expires in June but
his suggested demands of £60,000 per week have put them off.
Even if Bosnich were to drop his salary demands by a third,
United would still find him too expensive for their strict
pay scale which rises to a maximum of £25,000 per week.
Van der Sar, like Stam - who has been pushing for United to
bring in his fellow countryman - is prepared to stick to
the budget because he knows that involvement with the
world's most glamorous club would pay him in other ways
such as sponsorships and endorsements.
United have been linked with other goalkeepers, including
Oscar Moens (AZ Alkmar), Carlos Roa (Real Mallorca) and
Gianluigi Buffon (Parma) but Van der Sar, having indicated
his desire to move to Old Trafford, has left them behind in
the ratings.
Schmeichel, meanwhile, is certain to captain United in the
last match of his English career - the Champions League
Final against Bayern Munich in Barcelona on May 26.
The uncertainty over Bosnich's plans led to Villa manager
John Gregory last night appealing for him to come clean and
declare where his future lies.
Gregory, anxious to start planning for next season, said:
'We are resigned to the fact that Mark will be leaving and
if that is the case we would have to make a signing as
quickly as possible. It would be a big help if Mark would
tell us his plans now.'
Bosnich insists he will not make a decision until the
season is over and said: 'I have been having continuing
dialogue with chairman Doug Ellis.' Villa visit Old
Trafford on Saturday and Bosnich is battling to recover
from the ankle injury which ruled him out at the weekend.

I am still collecting info for Barcelona. I have loads of stuff
Can we wait until the weekend then I will mail to all lists

I do not have a ticket and have NO idea how I will get hold of one :(
Seems like the EUEFA website is out of date
HAS ANYONE HEARD ANYTHING or have some more news on tickets to perhaps get
our hopes up?
Anyone care to guess the going price in Barce last minute?

Subject: Phillips And Brown Get England Call
England coach Kevin Keegan has handed first caps to Kevin Phillips, of
Sunderland, and Manchester United's Wes Brown for the friendly with Hungary.
Phillips has been a prolific goalscorer again this season despite several
injury problems and he has been a major factor in Peter Reid's side
regaining their Premiership status.
Brown gets the nod after impressing for the England Under-21 side this
season and for some assured displays for United.
Phillips, chosen ahead of Leicester's Emile Heskey, will have England
skipper Alan Shearer as his strike partner in a side mixing youth with
experience.
Arsenal goalkeeper David Seaman will win his 50th cap against the Hungarians
at the age of 35.
The midfield has an experienced look about it with the exception of
Tottenham's Tim Sherwood, who picked up his first cap in last month's
impressive victory over Poland.
Liverpool's Steve McManaman is picked again and seems certain to be given
his preferred role out wide on the right flank despite failing to impress in
the Euro 2000 qualifying victory against Poland last month.

Subject: NO BID FOR VAN DER SAR, CLAIM UNITED
Edwin Van der Sar claims Manchester United have approached him to move to
Old Trafford - but the club insist they have not begun transfer talks.
The Holland and Ajax goalkeeper says United contacted him last week to
sound him out about a move to Old Trafford.
However United solicitor and director Maurice Watkins insisted no approach
has been made.
"I'm not aware of anything of that nature," he said.
United have been consistently linked with Van der Sar since Peter
Schmeichel announced he would be leaving Old Trafford in the summer.
He has made no secret of his desire to leave Ajax and join United and his
cause has been championed by Reds defender and Dutch team-mate Jaap Stam.
Van der Sar is under contract at Ajax and the Dutch club would want at
least £5million to part with one of their few remaining stars.
He said: "Manchester United were in contact with me to ask about my
feelings and availability about joining them if a transfer could be agreed
between the clubs. Obviously I have to be interested."

Subject: United play down Van der Sar claims ««
Manchester United have refuted Dutch goalkeeper Edwin Van der Sar claims
they approached him last week concerning a possible summer move.
The £5m-rated keeper has been widely tipped as the likely successor to
Peter Schmeichel, when the big Dane moves on at the end of the season.
And the Ajax star said: "Manchester United were in contact with me to ask
about my feelings and availability about joining them if a transfer could
be agreed."
But United solicitor and director Maurice Watkins said: "I'm not aware of
anything of that nature."
Aston Villa's Mark Bosnich and highly-rated youngster Richard Wright of
Ipswich have also been linked with a move to Old Trafford in the summer,
but it appears Van der Sar is top of manager Alex Ferguson's wanted list.

Roy K: Roight lads, we've got dis PFA thingy to vote for now,
I don't want any messing like last year, when you all took hours
to decide, and we went out at Barnsley forgetting what the hell
we was doin'....
To make it simple, we'll take a vote, and from that send a block
vote for one player. Raimond, you hold the voting paper and the
pen, I won't trust the Dane after dat Pepsi ad (ha ha)
Dwight Y: 26 goals boys and lots of assists back at my house
Roy K: Sorry Porn-King, we can't vote for our own! I know we have
in the past because Incey told us to, and had our votes disqualified,
but they want us to vote properly this time.
Peter S: What about a keeper? They're the vital part of the team
-stop laughing you bastards! I would say, Beasant at Forest, he's
been the hardest working!
Dwight Y: Seaman
David B: You would say that! I'd go for anyone but LeBoeuf, the
poncy frog.
Paul S: That Kevin Keegan is so nice, he says such nice things
Nicky B: Shut it, Ginger Prince! He ain't no player, he's a boss.
What about David Twatty - he puts himself about
Ronny J: Can we Norwegians vote?
Roy K: You and Henning can, but the kid is too young!
Ole GS: That's not fair! I am older than I look, and I do mind your
cars when you ask me to
Henning B: That Rivaldo ran me ragged
Roy K: Only UK-based players you divvy!
Jaap S: Nobody runs me ragged. I am the Terminator. No-one
deserves a vote.
Dinnis I: Full-backs, dey are the bees-knees. Or penalty-takers.
Phil N: That rules you out Teddy!
Teddy S: Cheeky git! As my old mate Terry Venables used to say,
watch the geezer in the box, see ow ee moves abaat you lazy

Andy C: Strikers, yes. That religious kid at Liverpool
Ryan G: St Owen of Anfield?
Andy C: Yes, or Hasslewank at Leeds
Wes B: Don't mention that bloke - he made a mug of me!
Peter S: And me!
Jesper B: In Sweden we have big busty blondes
Roy K: Shut him up! Gazza, you haven't said anything yet. You are
normally the sensible one in this place, whose opinion we
can all take heed of. Who is the biggest cheating whinging collapsing
crybaby you have faced this season?
Gazza N: Ginola, Ginola, Ginola!
Roy K: Raimond don't write that down! Oh shit! Too late. Post
