Ryan has scored the only goal of the match Subject: MATCH REPORT By John Curtis, PA Sport Ryan Giggs marked his return to Manchester United's starting line-up with a late winner to kill off gutsy Coventry's challenge at Highfield Road. The Welshman, who suffered a hamstring injury against Derby on February 3, struck 12 minutes from time to cap a spell of ever-increasing United pressure. He had been off target with two earlier good opportunities but eventually found his shooting boots to break Coventry's hearts and send them deeper into relegation trouble. Gigg's goal was his eighth of the season but his first in the Premiership since Nottingham Forest on Boxing Day. It enabled the Red Devils to retain their unbeaten record in 1999 and stretch their sequence since they were last beaten to 12 matches. But they were made to battle all the way by a Coventry side who could probably count themselves unfortunate not to have collected a share of the spoils. They had the man of the match in central defender Paul Williams while George Boateng was also an inspirational figure in the middle of the park. United never threatened to repeat their 6-2 and 8-1 demolition jobs of their previous two visits to the Midlands against Leicester City and Nottingham Forest. They seldom played with their usual fluency and their best player was defender Ronny Johnsen. But in the cold light of the day the three points have enabled United to take another significant step towards reclaiming the Premiership crown. However, Coventry can take heart from the fact that they will surely move clear of trouble if they can repeat their level of performance. United began in confident fashion and Giggs squandered a good chance when he fired over from 15 yards out after Andy Cole had turned the ball invitingly into his path. But they struggled to break down a determined Coventry rearguard and as the half developed Strachan's side started to play with more purpose and looked increasingly menacing. With Boateng pulling the strings and Paul Telfer an increasing influence, they enjoyed a purple patch - and could have twice taken the lead inside a 60-second spell. First United keeper Peter Schmeichel pulled off a flying save to tip a rising 20-yard thunderbolt from Boateng around the post after good play by Gary McAllister and Telfer. Then Telfer sent in a dipping cross from the right wing and Noel Whelan got in front of Jaap Stam and hooked a first-time effort inches over the bar. Schmeichel also beat out a fierce effort from McAllister after he had been found in space by Boateng. But United, apart from that Giggs effort, caused few problems in the opening 45 minutes with Williams showing up well against Yorke and Cole. Paul Scholes, Stam and Cole were all yellow carded in the opening 45 minutes. Ferguson brought on Henning Berg in place of Stam at half-time and United tried to impose their authority on the game. Cole had an effort disallowed for offside and Telfer got in a vital block on a goal-bound shot from Beckham just inside the area. Cole then burst down the right and squared the ball across the area for Giggs but he wasted his second good chance of the afternoon when he sliced his shot wide. Williams continued to be a rock-like figure in the Sky Blues defence as United started to enjoy the greater share of the possession - but Coventry were still willing to attack at every opportunity. Denis Irwin deflected a shot from Boateng for a corner but with 12 minutes left Giggs finally got his sights right to put United ahead. Beckham's cross skidded off the head of substitute Ole Gunnar Solskjaer to Giggs on the left and his low shot beat Hedman with Shaw's efforts to clear from under his own bar in vain. Coventry staged a late rally and Huckerby managed to scoop the ball over Schmeichel but Berg was able to come around and clear the danger.

Ryan has scored the only goal of the match Subject: Giving it away Hi All, I did a count on the number of times, unchallanged, we gave the ball away v Coventry. Once you start counting, it's surprising! 21 times in the first half, but only 6 in the second. The control we had in the second reflected that. Cheers, David Marshall Brisbane, Australia. Red 'til I'm dead.
Ryan has scored the only goal of the match Subject: Coventry - United TV Report by Terry For 80 minutes it was the triumph of perspiration over inspiration, not that we looked all that inspired for long periods of the game. But Coventry certainly worked hard and perhaps deserved better than they got. With their wobbly defence you can see why they're always hovering near the bottom of the league, but with their work rate, it's also easy to see why they always end up surviving. They were certainly up for it today as they chased and snapped at our heels like a pack of wild dogs. Maybe we were suffering an Arse hangover (sounds unpleasant). The pitch didn't help much either, all cut up and heavy-looking. Yorkie looked uncomfortable again, as he did against Arsenal, and Jaap too wasn't as sure-footed as usual. He didn't come out for the second half and one wonders if it's the hamstring that troubled him after the recent Dutch international. He seemed to be playing more defensively than usual exemplified by a series of safe back passes to Schmikes when one might have expected him to do a bit more with the ball. It sometimes looked as if we were trying to play the ball too fast with the last ball going astray more often than was good for one's nerves. There were also some bad attacking decisions made, passes not being made or being made in the wrong place like Scholesie when he opted for a pass inside despite having Cole (?) free on the outside. It was frustrating to watch as Coventry's defence looked error-prone despite all their hard work, yet we couldn't get it together enough to score. [Another ten minutes of bitching and moaning has been cut out at this point.] Berg came on for Jaap at the start of the second half and the two Norwegian centre-backs combined well together, as did Gazza and Dinnis. In fact I think we looked more comfortable at the back in the second half than we did in the first half, which is more than can be said for the attack, which lost its way a bit till the goal went in. Becks had another good chance on 60 minutes but it says a lot about our dynamic attack that our second corner didn't arrive till the 70th minute. Soon after, Ole was brought on for Andy Cole, who I thought had done pretty well again, certainly better than Yorkie. (I wish the Porno King would find himself a less taxing hobby during his spare time. It can't be easy to give everything he's got for 90 minutes when he already gave it rattling the bed springs all night.) Poor Ole. Alex uses him as if were a walking Miracle. Bring him on, we'll get the goal we need. Be reasonable, Alex. Cough!, having said that, we did in fact get the goal we needed within 10 minutes of the Assassin stepping onto the pitch, and he had a part in the goal as well. A brilliant quick throw-out from Schmikes launched us on another rapid counter attack (like so many before that had broken down when approaching the Coventry penalty area). Yorkie, in space for once, collected the ball and showed some speed as he carried the ball upfield and inside where Giggsy took over. The ball went out right to Becks who waited a second for Giggsy to get into the area, then launched another perfect cross. Ole went up for it, the ball was headed on behind (by Ole or the defender?), and there was Giggsy to miskick the ball into the ground. The bounce fooled the goalie and a defender on the line who could only help it on its way into the roof of the net. A lightning-quick move crowned by a slightly lucky goal. But I ain't complaining. And that was just about that. Fergie decided to take what he had and not risk another gigantic cock-up like last season when Coventry beat us with two late goals. So Pea Neville came on in place of Yorkie, thus leaving Ole isolated up front but the lad had already done his job. There was of course still time for another scare in the last minute of time added-on when Schmikes had to come to the rescue by smothering a shot, and Berg then cleared to safety. It was a vital win, made even more important by today's wins for the Arse and Chelsea. It wasn't a great display by any means but we showed the determination, yet again, to keep on fighting to the end and, just as important, not to give up what we had earned, as happened so often in the earlier part of the season. We're going to need that fighting spirit in the coming weeks. After the Saints at home next week, the really tough games come thick and fast. ______________ Terry Saudi
Ryan has scored the only goal of the match Subject: Green light for Giggs By STUART MATHIESON YOUTH POLICY . . . Joshua Watson was one of 2000 fans to sign up Giggs at the Arndale Centre yesterday RYAN Giggs has pledged to make up for one of the biggest disappointments of his Manchester United career. The Welsh winger feared a repeat of the agony he faced last season when a hamstring injury struck him down again at the beginning of the month. Twelve months ago the same problem cost him eight matches, including United's two Champions League ties with Monaco. The loss of the 25-year-old contributed to the collapse of the Reds' season. After appearing as a surprise substitute against Arsenal in midweek Giggs is now set for an outing away at Coventry City tomorrow, having kept his absence down this time to just two full matches. Now he's building up his fitness in readiness for the crunch European Cup last eight clashes with Inter Milan, which begin a week on Wednesday. ``I knew when I injured the hamstring against Derby that it wasn't as bad as last season, but I still feared I'd miss the Inter games,'' Ryan told M.E.N. Sport. ``Having gone through that frustrating experience I didn't want to face it again. ``Last year was one of the biggest disappointments of my career because we were flying at the time. It was very hard to take because I really thought we had a very good chance last season in the Champions League. To have to sit and watch as it all went wrong was awful and I want to make up for that. ``However, this season I know that we have the strength in in our squad to cover for all eventualities, so while it would have been tough to miss out again we'd be well equipped to get over it. ``I am looking to get a few games under my belt now, although I don't know what the manager has in his plans for Coventry. ``It wasn't easy coming into the match against Arsenal because it was such a quick match. I only got five or six touches but I was pleased. ``Touch wood, I am going to be okay now. I know I'm more prone to hamstring injuries than other players because of my sprinting.'' Manager Alex Ferguson is planning more minutes for Giggs tomorrow at Highfield Road. ``Ryan's not 100 per cent fit yet but he'll be getting a bit of the game at Coventry at least,'' he says. ``He has a bit to go yet but the main thing is he's back. We've got two matches before the European tie with Inter. He should be fully ready then.''
Ryan has scored the only goal of the match Subject: Italian Cup Semi Final, 1st leg Inter 0 - 2 Parma Inter finished with eight (yes, that's '8') players. They'd hammered away at the Parma defence all the game risking the odd counter attack, when they fell behind controversially in the 77th minute. There appeared to be a foul out on the left and the Inter defence froze expecting the referee to blow his whistle. He didn't. A Parma player (Asprilla I think) crossed the ball and Veron scored. Inter went berserk. First Bergomi was sent off, and he was closely followed by Colonnese and Zanetti. Playing against 8 men, it was all Parma for the last ten minutes and Balbo headed in a second in the 86th minute. This should effectively eliminate Inter from the Cup. They're already more or less out of the Serie A championship ... which just leaves the Champions League for them to concentrate all their efforts on. Hhhmmm. Inter were again without Ronaldo and Zamorano, and Baggio was missing last night too. By the way, the latest on the Toothy One is that there is 'a small ray of hope' that he might make it for the Manchester game. Get yer dolls out again. I didn't get to see last night's Arse game. It's a pity we didn't take our chances but with Chelsea drawing and Villa losing, our position hasn't suffered. Thanks to Snark for the report. I just have one question: what's a Bohemian Earspoon? _____________ Terry Saudi
