Hi, my dear Reds the world over, Please accept my warmest congratulations to you all for our brilliant victory last night and our first league title since my idol and king Cantona left the Old Trafford. I'm so relieved after the final whistle. Thanks for the live radio match coverage from ManUtd.com. I'm just so happy. My colleague next to cubical and his family are very happy as well. Let me sing a song to entertain you all, you who have been brilliant all through this toughest season: "Such a feeling is coming over me, There is wonder in almost everything I see. Not a cloud in the sky got the sun in my eye, And I won't be surprised if it's a dream. Everything I want the world to be, Is now coming true especially for me. And the reason is clear, It's because WE WON THE LEAGUE, MU is the nearest thing to the heaven that I've seen..." Subject: Carling Report CHAMPIONS ** CHAMPIONS ** CHAMPIONS ** CHAMPIONS ** CHAMPIONS ** CHAMPIONS ** Man United (1) 2 Tottenham (1) 1 FT Beckham 42 Ferdinand 24 Cole 47 It was nervy and nail-biting. It was almost excruciatingly tense. At times it must have been footballing torture for the fans who pressed radios to their ears and prayed that results at Highbury and Old Trafford would go their way. But after an afternoon akin to walking a footballing tightrope Manchester United finally won the most captivating title race for years. Spectacular goals from David Beckham and Andy Cole eclipsed a Tottenham side, who after taking the lead through Les Ferdinand went close to helping their fiercest rivals Arsenal retain the Premiership crown. At the final whistle Alex Ferguson let out a euphoric shriek of ``Yes'' and was buried in a delirious scrum of his backroom staff. Beckham and David May kissed and hugged each other, Dwight Yorke and Andy Cole rolled on the Old Trafford turf in delight. Ferguson then raced on to the pitch to embrace each United player in turn. And at precisely 6.12pm Manchester United captain Roy Keane wrapped his arms around the Premiership trophy, kissed it and held it aloft to the United faithful. One down and two to go in the chase for the most formidable treble in British soccer history. And as the inevitable Queen hit ``We are the Champions'' belted out across the Theatre of Dreams and acclaim rang out all around Old Trafford the feeling grew that this side is on the crest of a red and white wave which will not break until it has enveloped all the prizes on offer this thrilling season. In typical fashion United made it difficult for themselves. Ferguson has often remarked that his talented team achieve things the hard way. But little worth having comes easily. And if Ferguson acclaimed the strength of character displayed by his talented stars just how proud should they be of him. It is Ferguson's fifth championship in seven years, a total which equals the record of the legendary Sir Matt Busby. It is his 10th major prize since arriving at Old Trafford 13 years ago - already two more than Sir Matt. And in 10 days time Ferguson hopes to have closed within one trophy of Bob Paisley's record of 13 by adding the FA Cup against Newcastle next Saturday and his Holy Grail of the European Cup the following Wednesday. If all three adorn the Old Trafford trophy cabinet before the month is out then there can be no argument which is the greatest team in British soccer history - and which is its most accomplished manager. Forget, for a moment, the jealousy which pervades the parochial and partisan fan-base of British football and salute a team which is fast-becoming the envy of the world. Yes, the world. The importance of the occasion prevented them from turning on the imperious style which they have displayed for much of this glittering Premiership campaign. But still they had heroes - not least in the shape of terrier-like midfielder and captain Roy Keane, who led the fightback in typically rousing fashion when they had been stunned by Ferdinand's opening goal. Oh, how the suspended Keane will be missed in Barcelona. They had Paul Scholes and Dwight Yorke, who worked tirelessly, Gary Neville and Denis Irwin such models of consistency and Peter Schmeichel, the big Danish goalkeeper playing his last competitive match at Old Trafford. Much, of course, had been made of the irony of Spurs boss George Graham possibly helping his old club Arsenal, where he won six trophies in eight years before being shown the door over the infamous `bung' affair, to retain the Premiership title they won so gloriously last season. And there had been suggestions, mostly from Arsenal manager Arsene Wenger, that sheer weariness caused by battling on three fronts would cause United to trip at the Premiership's final hurdle. In the end it was all just so much hot air. United showed their passion, commitment and quality, as they have at every twist and turn of this thrilling season, out on the pitch. And so to the story of the match before which Ferguson surprised us by putting his faith in Teddy Sheringham, the former Spurs striker, and leaving Cole on the bench as Old Trafford rocked and rolled with anticipation. The fans were almost celebrating as early as the seventh minute when United came close to scoring what would have been one of the most bizarre goals of the season. Spurs goalkeeper Ian Walker took his time with a routine kick from his six-yard box, only to see his punt crash against the advancing Yorke and spin agonisingly towards goal where it struck the post and rebounded into Walker's grateful arms. If that was lucky for a Spurs side robbed of the talents of David Ginola with a calf injury after just eight minutes then there was nothing fortunate about the way Tottenham took the lead after 24 minutes. A long floated ball found the head of Steffen Iversen who beat May in the air and sent the ball skidding into the path of Ferdinand. The former England striker, who hadn't scored in 1999, shrugged off the attentions of Ronny Johnsen, stuck out a boot and instinctively lobbed the ball over Schmeichel, whose desperate attempts at retrieval left him entangled with the ball in the net. Spurs 1-0 up and suddenly United's title party was in danger of being gatecrashed by Arsenal's fiercest rivals. Could this be a nightmare at the Theatre of Dreams? But if United have proved anything this season it is that they are not a side to panic. Remember, this is the team that came back from two goals down against Juventus in Turin to clinch a place in the Champions' League final. They surged forward and Walker was soon the busiest man in Manchester - the Spurs goalkeeper saving from Sheringham and at close-range from Scholes. But just as it was beginning to look as if it might be one of those days Beckham brought United level with a goal whose build-up was shrouded in controversy. Spurs maintained Tim Sherwood was fouled by Scholes in midfield but referee Graham Poll allowed the game to continue and Scholes' pass found Beckham unmarked in the penalty area. Few players strike a ball as viciously as Beckham and the wicked swerving shot high into the Spurs net would have beaten any goalkeeper in the world. Half-time - level at Old Trafford and level at Highbury and time for managerial master Ferguson to weave his cerebral magic. Off came Sheringham, whose lack of pace was struggling to dent the Spurs defence. On came Cole and two minutes later Ferguson's grip on the Premiership had become vice-like after a goal fit to clinch any trophy. Gary Neville's ball into the Spurs penalty area was ordinary enough, but the fashion in which Cole controlled it was extraordinary. Two deft touches brought the ball under control. A third delicious caress of his right foot took it over Walker and into the net. The sigh of relief which blew around Old Trafford was tempered by news of a goal by Nwankwo Kanu at Highbury. But United's fate was back in their own hands and if only Paul `He scores goals' Scholes had been more decisive - or fortunate - with a header and two shots, all saved by Walker, United's party would have been swinging much earlier in this frenetic afternoon. As it was Ferguson withdrew Scholes in the 69th minute for the more defensively-minded Nicky Butt - and the message was clear: What we have we hold. To say the last 20 minutes were anxious is the understatement of the season. Iversen went close for Tottenham, but his scuffed shot bobbled into Schmeichel's arms. And then there was Ferguson on the touchline, eyes popping, finger pointing at his temple as he exhorted his side to use their footballing brains for the most vital minutes of their careers. They did and in the end the victory was just. And while it was not plain-sailing the plane which dragged a banner across the Mancunian sky at the final whistle said it all - MUFC Carling Champions 1998-99. Man United: Schmeichel, G. Subject: United-Spurs TV report by Terry Dale Oh yes, a typical United performance. Go a goal down, get everybody's nerves on edge, cause a few heart attacks, and then, just as we're all climbing onto the window ledge to hurl ourselves off, score the equaliser. Can't we ever ever have a comfortable game? You know, go a couple of goals up within the first ten minutes and just sort of enjoy the ride? Why all the stress for God's sake??! After we'd had so many chances, including hitting the post (if only the ball had been spinning in the opposite direction), I was somewhat pissed off to see Les 'Useless' Ferdinand beating Ronaldo to lob the ball over Schmikes into the net. His chance came after Iversen had beaten May to head the ball on. 'If only Jaapy had been there,' was my immediate thought though the language was a bit more colourful. We certainly need him but he should be ready for the FA Cup Final. Before Spurs took the lead, we could have had a comfortable lead, Yorkie especially missed a great chance but he couldn't be faulted for his game till that point. It was worrying that we needed to score twice but the number of chances we had created meant that that was a distinct possibility. As the first half progressed, the chances came and went. I forget how many Scholsie had. As someone remarked not so long ago, he can knock them in for England but has problems finding the net for United given the number of chances that come his way. Then, with half time approaching, there was Becks to do the job. The timing is surely no coincidence. I believe the team would have been too afraid to go into the changing room at half time to hear Fergie's wise words. They either had to score a goal before half time or else hide somewhere in the crowd till the second half started. I think it was Scholsie (maybe Teddy?) who made the final pass right across the area and there was Becks to place the ball high to the right of Walker. What a relief. Having created so many chances, we had to be optimistic about the second half ... though there was always that lurking danger of the counter attack from Spurs. Also, much better to be 1-1 than 0-0. Whenever the score is 0-0, you always have that sneaking feeling that we still have to make a defensive howler and concede the inevitable goal. Now, we'd got that out of the way. Andy Cole came on for Teddy at the start of the second half. More speed up front, but would we lose out in the air or lack a bit of creativity without Edward S? Nope. Cole linked up superbly with Yorke and showed excellent control, no more so than with the winner which came just three minutes after the restart. A high ball was lobbed forward into the area, apparently too high for Cole to reach. But no, he stre-e-e-e-t-c-h-ed out a leg, brought the ball down beautifully, and lobbed a gentle shot over the advancing Walker and into the net. It was to be, Berni, a championship-winning goal, and they don't come much bigger than that. For the next 10 or 12 minutes, we looked as if we could be swept along to more goals on the waves of sound pouring out of the , er, North Stand. Yes, even the North Stand were joining in the songs and chants. One of them being oo-ah-Cantona. Was it right to sing Eric's name at this moment? I think so. He hasn't kicked a ball in this championship but his influence is still felt throughout the team in the way he inspired the youngsters, so, yes, he deserved to be remembered today. We've also buried a myth that would surely have grown if we had not won, and that is that can't win without Eric. That's now dead and buried. 'Thanks Eric, but we're standing on our own two feet' is the message that goes out from OT tonight. And then, we went off the boil. Probably because the news had just come through that Kanu had put Arsenal ahead on 65 minutes after a goalmouth scramble. Suddenly, the crowd's anxiety spread out to the players on the pitch and we were in for a nervous last 30 minutes. (30 minutes! Bloody 'ell!) Before the chances dried up completely, a couple of good ones were made. Superb play from Andy Cole, again, ended with a Yorkie overhead kicked that just went over the bar. A couple of minutes later, more elegant skill from Cole saw Scholsie miss yet again. That signalled the end of Paul's contribution as Fergie brought on Butt. The arrival of Butt for Scholes and, later, Phizza Neville for an anonymous Giggs, indicated clearly that Fergie wanted to avoid a Spurs breakaway equaliser. Better to stick with what we'd got than take unnecessary risks. We didn't look all that good towards the end but, what the hell, there was too much at stake. Spurs didn't threaten too much so it could have been a rougher ride. Then Mr Poll blew his little whistle, and our 5th championship in 7 years was back home. Yeeeeesssssssssssssss!! Spurs played their part and there can be no question of favouritism, so United fans, Spurs fans and everyone else can be sure it was an honourable win. I think the same can be said about Shotgun Gregory's Villa as well. We had to fight for it, but we did it by our own efforts. Who deserves special mention? Becks, yet again, gave everything. Yorkie and Andy Cole were both superb. Schmikes of course in his last game at OT went out with a gigantic bang. Keano (how we need this guy) won us the midfield. I'd also like to mention Mr Big Time Charlie Ince: sorry, Charlie, your goal against us at Anfield meant zilch in the end. I'll bet the whites of his eyes are flashing in horror tonight. One down, two to go. I remember an ABU saying that to me after the draw with Elleray's Heroes, but I think he meant something different from me. ________________ Terry Saudi

Subject: Ferguson targets treble - BBC United captain Roy Keane slides in to dispossess Justin Edinburgh Alex Ferguson set his sights on European glory after leading Manchester United to the Premiership title on the last day of the season. The Old Trafford manager saluted his championship-winning heroes, and then admitted: "The big one for me now is the Champions' Cup." United are on course for the treble, with the FA Cup final against Newcastle next week, followed by the European Cup decider with Bayern Munich. "We have to go to Wembley and win and then Barcelona for the greatest day of our lives," Ferguson said. "We are going to enjoy ourselves." But Ferguson admitted the 2-1 victory over Tottenham that handed the Red Devils the title had given him no end of heart-stopping moments. "It was tense, very tense," he smiled. "It's the nature of things at United that we make it hard work for ourselves. We did that by going a goal behind." Super sub The turning point in the contest came at half-time, when Ferguson replaced Teddy Sheringham with Andy Cole, who scored what proved to be the winner just minutes after coming on. Ferguson explained: "I had a feeling Andy would score. I thought we did well in the first half and I fancied our chances in the second half." The manager also paid tribute to goalkeeper Peter Schmeichel, who is leaving the club at the end of the season and played his last ever game at Old Trafford. "I will miss Peter, he is the best goalkeeper I have ever seen in my life," said Ferguson. He has now equalled fellow Scot Sir Matt Busby in winning five championships. "I always knew when I came here that one day we would win the championship but to do it again and here at Old Trafford is brilliant," he added. "It has been a privilege to follow Sir Matt Busby. He is the bedrock of Manchester United." Fergie is 'top man' An emotional Schmeichel said: "Alex Ferguson is the top man in the world for me. I am very proud of what he said about me. "I will miss it all a lot but I have made my mind up to leave. I can always remember this day. "We have won the league and go into the FA Cup with a great attitude. It is possible to win that and what comes after that we'll see," he added.

Subject: Match Report Minute by Minute UNITED REGAIN LEAGUE TITLE 90 mins: UNITED ARE CHAMPIONS - The final whistle blows to the relief and joy of the Manchester United players. They deservedly win the match to take the first leg of the elusive treble. Seconds after the victory the tune of "We Are The Champions" belts out as the team celebrates on the pitch. 90 mins: The fourth official signals just two minutes of injury time. 89 mins: The clock continues to tick down as United look in control and on course for the title. Arsenal have beaten Aston Villa but it is irrevelant if United hang on. 87 mins: United continue to play keep-ball and Spurs do not look to have enough firepower left to worry Fergie's men. 83 mins: Butt has a good chance to clinch the championship but he scuffs a shot wide from just inside the box. 82 mins: Cole nearly nips in to intercept a Campbell header back to the keeper but it just eludes him. 79 mins: Phil Neville replaces Giggs. 77 mins: George Graham brings on Andy Sinton for a tired-looking Dominguez. 75 mins: United lower the tempo slightly as they prefer to play possession football and not throw caution to the wind. 70 mins: Alex Ferguson decides to bring on fresh legs substituting Scholes for Nicky Butt. Spurs replace John Scales with Luke Young. 67 mins: Tremendous work down the flank from Cole produces a golden chance for Scholes but he screws the shot wide. 64 mins: An ambitious overhead kick from Yorke nearly comes off but it agonisingly just dips over the bar. 63 mins: The Old Trafford celebrations are muted when news comes through that Arsenal have taken the lead at Highbury with a Kanu goal. Iversen nearly doubles the agony when he latches on to a corner but his shot is saved by Schmeichel. 58 mins: In-form Walker denies Scholes yet again as his trailing leg keeps out another fierce goalbound effort. 57 mins: A sweet cross from Beckham finds a diving Scholes whose header is gathered by Walker. 54 mins: Spurs win a free kick in an ominous position after Dominguez is fouled but the kick is cleared by Beckham as United look on course to regaining the title. 47 mins: GOAL COLE - Cole makes an instant impression when he beats the offside trap, controls a flighted through ball and lobs it over the head of the advancing Walker to send the Old Trafford crowd wild. 46 mins: Andy Cole starts the second half in place of Sheringham. 45 mins: An exhilirating first half is brought to a close with United holding the upper hand on the balance of play but not on the scoreline. United know they must win the game to be sure of the title but their eagerness to grab three points is allowing chances on the break for Spurs. 43 mins: GOAL BECKHAM - A piece of Beckham magic as he fires a diagonal strike across goal into the top corner of the net. Walker got a hand to the ball but the accuracy was too precise. 41 mins: Iversen continues to be a danger and a hard, low strike forces a good save from Schmeichel. He cannot hold the shot but Gary Neville clears to safety. 38 mins: United are dominating the play but in their haste to grab an equaliser Spurs are proving dangerous on the counter-attack. Iversen finds himself unmarked in front of goal but his shot is blocked for a corner. 36 mins: Spurs continue to show resolute defending when Campbell blocks a goalbound Yorke shot following a surging run and cross from Roy Keane. 34 mins: Walker pulls off a tremendous double save from Paul Scholes. Scholes cracks a fierce shot from just outside the box which Walker parries to his left. The ball is fired into the Spurs penalty area and again Walker foils a Scholes strike. The misery is compouded for Alex Ferguson's men when unmarked Beckham heads over from point-blank range. 30 mins: Giggs fires a dangerous cross into the penalty area which is scrambled away by Justin Edinburgh for a corner. Once again confusion reigns in the box from the corner but somehow Spurs survive again. 29 mins: Spurs break well from constant United pressure as Freund cleverly back-heels the ball into the path of full-back Stephen Carr. But Carr wastes the opportunity and crosses the ball straight to Schmeichel. 26 mins: Teddy Sheringham is shown the yellow card for a late tackle on Campbell. 24 mins: GOAL FERDINAND - Les Ferdinand shocks Old Trafford into silence as he runs on to a long ball beating Johnsen in a chase and lifts a looping shot over the head of Peter Schmeichel. The United keeper desperately dashes back to his line to reach it but it is too late. 23 mins: Spurs give United a reminder they are not here to make the numbers when Steffen Iversen outfoxes Ronny Johnsen in the air and blazes a shot over the bar. 19 mins: Yorke misses a golden opportunity to break the deadlock when he takes advantage of a defensive error but he fails to convert from a tight angle and his strike drifts frustratingly across goal. 17 mins: Giggs forces a corner when his shot is deflected off Steffen Freund. From the resulting kick Giggs nips at the near post with a bullet header but it is straight into the arms of Walker. 14 mins: A useful Giggs run forces another corner as Spurs remain under the cosh. David Beckham flights the ball into the box but Sol Campbell rises above a sea of heads to clear the danger. 10 mins: Spurs suffer a huge blow when David Ginola makes an early exit from the game with a calf injury. Substitute Jose Dominguez comes on in his place. 9 mins: United continue to pressure and force a corner but the away defence clear it to safety. 7 mins: Lucky Walker comes inches to letting in a howler when he kicks the ball directly at Yorke but the rebound hits the post and back into the grateful arms of the keeper. 4 mins: Ryan Giggs fires in a first-time cross which Dwight Yorke latches on to at the near-post. His jab at the ball is turned around the post by Spurs keeper Ian Walker. 1 min: The game kicks off at a fever-pitch Old Trafford with the Premiership at stake.

Subject: Champions "Tony Smith" Just got home from Old Trafford, and it would be wrong of me not to post something tonight. What can I say? I am just so happy, and so relieved. I've gone through the mill during the last week or two, but I am really looking forward to Wembley now - the pressure is off. I don't share the view that the treble will automatically follow, because Bayern will be very tough, but I think we'll beat Newcastle if we field a decent side. Either way I'm going to worry no more, and I will thoroughly enjoy my trip to Barca with the title in the bag. I didn't go to the Throstles because I didn't think I'd be good company before the game, but now I'm home with half a bottle of Champers inside me I'm nice and relaxed. The Spurs goal was one of my life's low points, but it seems so long ago now. Nice for Teddy, winning the first medal, and for Yorkie too - he just didn't want to leave the pitch did he? It was very emotional saying goodbye to Schmeichel, but the big daft buggar managed to boot the ball into touch about 10 times, just to keep us on our toes. We'll never see a better keeper. Last Autumn I wrote an appreciation of Schmeichel for Red News - he was having a poor spell at the time, but I predicted that he may bounce back and finish as a Champion. And nice that Cole, still reminded of a missed chance in 95, should be the man to seal it. Andy wasn't letting go of that trophy was he? I will dedicate my joy tonight to: Wenger, who has won nowt, and whose team is approaching the end of the road. Paul Ince, who didn't stop us winning the league - tough shit pal. All the Scousers who taunted us after the 2-2 last week - your ecstasy was premature and short-lived you saddos. Manchester City, scratching round trying to get out of the *third* division. Mr. D. Elleray, of Harrow-on-the-Hill. Tony (Looking forward to the highlights on TV) (c) 1999
