Bill McArthur's Day By Day Diary: December 1998
Pics at http://www.red11.org/mufc/billdiary98.htm
Tuesday Dec 15-1998
I woke up early because I had big plans. I wanted to get to
OT to do the stadium and museum tour which have eluded me
on my previous visits to OT. I was finally in town on a
non-match day, so the tour was on. I took the train into
the city and asked the info lady how to get to OT. She
directed me to the underground platform at Piccadilly, and
I was all set. Another ticket machine experience was
uneventful, as I was now a virtual expert at
the ticket purchasing machine. I began to wonder if we
would ever become so automated. The one thing we don't seem
to automate is transportation ticket buying. Anyway, I
headed onto the train, and it turned out to be a streetcar.
As we drove up the street, and through Piccadilly Gardens, I
looked at the postcard I had bought and tried to picture
the trees with leaves on them, and the flower beds with
flowers in them. Winter just isn't as
picturesque as the summer appeared to be on my postcard.
But you can't see UNITED in the summer! I didn't have to
think much about whether I'd rather see UNITED or a park
full of flowers. The train pulled up to Old Trafford
station, and I hopped off. This was vaguely familiar. On my
first trip to OT in '95 I had been at this station with 4
other mates of mine (3 Irish, one local) and we walked this
famous route to OT to see UNITED vs Aston
Villa. I followed the road right to OT. It was definitely
strange to walk to OT along a mostly empty road, and to see
the forecourt with cars parked on it. I thought to myself
that it must be this deserted at Maine Road too - on match
days!! I found the museum easily enough, and bought my
ticket for the tour. I spent the majority of the hour in the
museum since the next tour was nearly a full hour later. I
couldn't believe how much information had been
compiled and presented in this museum. It really is worth a
look if you've never been there. After passing the
turnstiles there is a wall on the left which depicts the
history of the famous United crest. I found the reason for
the omission of the words "Football Club" from the current
version of the crest. The reason given is to make the crest
simpler and more easily reproduced. Obviously it's easier
to reproduce on replica merchandise etc., so the club can
make more money. How sad. Imagine what would happen to the
club if Murdoch gets his way! The crest would be the least
of our problems! A full wall is dedicated to the youth
system that United has created. Current stars like the
Neville's & Ryan Giggs' histories are mentioned as the wall
explains how the young players of today become the stars of
tomorrow. A separate room is dedicated to the Munich
tragedy, and it is well deserved. A picture and
description is dedicated to each person who was on the
plane that day. There is also a row of newspaper front
pages from the week of Feb 6, 1958 who's headlines were all
about the tragedy. It was apparent from reading them that
the full impact of the disaster had not yet been realized.
It was only beginning to sink in as the week went on, as
the newspaper reports reflected. The lower level contained
a fascinating display dedicated to each player who
had ever captained United. An autographed shirt worn by the
player, and some other memorabilia of the played was
encased below a picture and description of the captain. All
in all, it's a fantastic museum, with far too much
information to mention. I recommend a visit for anyone who
can make it. The stadium tour was also brilliant. We began
at the bottom level of the museum, and started by walking
outside around the front of the stadium. We
paused to reflect on the statue of Sir Matt, the plaque
above his statue depicting the Munich team, and of course
the Munich clock. We then headed inside the stadium and
into the disabled section of the ground. From here a few
photos were taken, and our guide gave a full description of
the west stand. I had one of the other members of our tour
take my photo here, he was from Japan so he'd come even
further than I did! We were then taken into the
press room, down the old tunnel to the touchline, and into
the dressing rooms. One funny thing the guide asked was "is
anyone coming to the match tomorrow night?" and laughed.
Everyone else found this funny as well, but I kept my
secret to myself since I didn't want to spoil their fun.
Sky TV was laying down their cables for tomorrow's match,
so we couldn't go down the current player's tunnel. The
whole tour took about an hour, and again, was very
informative and interesting. I highly recommend that tour
to anyone who is in Manchester on a non-match day. By the
time I got back home, I made another call to Pete. I got
the machine again, and I wondered if Barry knew how lucky
he was to get Pete on the phone on the first try! I left
another message, and was confident that Pete would get back
to me later. I then called Linda for a favour that my
cousin asked me for the night before. My cousin's
fiancée didn't get a ticket to the Chelsea match, and I
offered to try to find a spare. Unfortunately, I had no
computer with me, and no internet access at all, so I
called Linda for some help. Linda graciously helped me out
and posted a message for a spare to the list, but nothing
turned up. I had tried, but with such short notice the
chances were very slim indeed.
Wednesday Dec 16-1998
I woke up from a dead sleep when my cousin came into the
room and shook me to tell me I had a phone call. I had
slept in again, as I was catching up on my lack of sleep
during the past week. Pete was on the phone, and we
arranged a time that he would be coming to get me that
afternoon. So the plans were made, and I couldn't sleep any
more, because in 10 hours I would be in OT watching UNITED
live for the second time in 5 days! Pete arrived
on schedule, and it was great to see him again. We went
straight to pick up Hal, and May offered me a cup of tea
and a mince pie which was greatly appreciated. As I drank
my tea, Pete, Hal & May reflected on Nick Coppack's last
visit when he came without a proper jacket. There was no
danger of that tonight, as I was well prepared with my
winter wear. Pete pulled on his winter socks and boots and
we were ready for the road. I thanked May again,
she is such a wonderful lady, and I was looking forward to
hopefully meeting her again the next time I make it to
Manchester. As we arrived at the 'Nest, I noticed Linda had
already arrived. I waved to her in the window, and I knew
that the match was only hours away now. Linda was on her
own, having arrived early after picking up FA Cup tickets
or something from the ticket office at OT. It's always a
pleasure to meet Linda, and we were able to have a
good chat this time. Duncan Drasdo arrived not long after
we had, and my third milestone meeting of this trip was
complete. Duncan was a key to this trip, since he was
generous enough to offer his wife's ticket for me to see
this match. I think Duncan had an advantage for this
meeting, since he may have seen a picture of me, but I had
never seen any pictures of Duncan. The group started to
grow as Alan Dobson, Linda's son & heir, Richard Martin,
Lisa
Bailey & boyfriend Evan all arrived at some stage. Before I
knew it we were on our way out of the 'Nest and heading to
OT. As usual the roads were full of supporters on their way
to the match. The difference this time was that it was my
first night match, so a new twist was put on the experience.
After picking up a copy of RED ISSUE, and the Great Untied
Songs Issue as well, we headed onto the forecourt. Duncan's
seats are in East Lower, so we
entered the stadium off of the forecourt. When we had
stepped into the seat location, I looked up and could not
believe my eyes. I couldn't believe how close I was to the
field. I told Duncan that these seats were fantastic, but
he remarked that they are much better standing then
sitting. Well, I couldn't disagree with that, since I
didn't even use the seat at all that night. I tried to
locate Linda, but it's tough to see through the crowd and
didn't have any success. I knew she was down in front of us
somewhere though! The away fans were up to our left, and
they tried
to make the most of their presence. The most they could
offer was "Chelsea, Chelsea, …" to which we all responded
"Rent Boys, Rent Boys…". They even turned into Spurs fans
on us when Teddy was warming up, by treating him to a
chorus of Saturday's "Ohhh Teddy Teddy, went to Man United
and you won **** all". There really is no answer to that,
since none of us was sure why he was warming up anyway.
Some good songs were aired
though, but the one which annoyed the travelling Cockneys
the most seemed to be "…have you ever seen Chelsea, ever
seen Chelsea, have you ever seen Chelsea win the league -
have you ****!". The highlight of the night was seeing Andy
Cole score right in front of us. He turned on the ball and
belted in straight into the corner of the net as De
Who-eeee flew in the air to land again with empty arms. Que
delirium as we bounced about in delight
and Andy put us deservedly ahead. The match was well
documented by Our Salford Lass in her report so I'll not go
on about it, but the atmosphere in the ground was amazing.
I envy anyone who is lucky enough to sit (or stand) in this
part of the ground because it is truly a great place to be
if you're looking for atmosphere. We headed back to the
'Nest again, feeling a bit down after letting another lead
slip into a draw for the second match in a row. Chelsea
really poured on the pressure in the last quarter of an
hour, so we took our point and that was that. Back at the
'Nest, another group formed. I can't remember who was all
there since we only stopped in for a quick one, but I did
meet Paul Busby for the first time when he arrived. Lisa
Bailey & boyfriend Evan came with Pete, Hal and I as Pete
gave them a lift home. Pete dropped me back at my cousin's
place, and again I thanked him for generously helping me
with transport.
---------------------------
Thursday Dec 17-1998
The next day was a travel day, as I headed into Manchester
on the train and caught the train up to Glasgow for the
next leg of my holidays. I had another year's worth of
United visiting behind me, and I was already looking forward
to the next time I could make it back to the Theatre of
Dreams.
Thanks to everyone who helped me along the way, and I'm
very sorry if I missed anyone in my recollection. It's
tough to remember it all at once.
Cheers everyone!

Manchester United strikers Dwight Yorke and Andy Cole gunned down weakened Leicester as Alex Ferguson's side stepped up their bid to regain the Premiership title in impressive fashion with a second-half goal blitz.
Yorke smashed a hat-trick - his first for the club - and Cole struck twice as the Red Devils took full advantage of the absence of key defenders Matt Elliott and Frank Sinclair through suspension to score five times in the second 45 minutes.
The lack of pace of Steve Walsh and Gerry Taggart at the heart of the home rearguard was clinically exposed and only some slipshod finishing prevented Yorke and Cole from finishing with hat-tricks.
Leicester also badly missed the physical presence of striker Emile Heskey who was confined to bed with 'flu.
They showed the usual typical never say die spirit which has become part of their trademark under Martin O'Neill.
But better sides than Leicester will struggle to halt the wave of attacks and menace shown by United's deadly forward duo in the weeks ahead.
In the second half United looked as if they were going to score every time they broke forward after Leicester had managed to remain on level terms at half-time.
The only worrying factor was the continuing uncertain form of goalkeeper Peter Schmeichel who, along with David Beckham, returned after a fortnight's mid-season break.
Leicester made a promising start and a dipping 25 yarder from Steve Guppy almost caught Peter Schmeichel unawares as it flew inches wide.
But after 10 minutes United broke the deadlock. Ryan Giggs and Jesper Blomqvist were involved in the build-up before Denis Irwin squared the ball across the area.
Cole's dummy meant that Dwight Yorke was left unmarked at the far post and he made no mistake for his 14th goal of the campaign.
Leicester 'keeper Kasey Keller then saved away from his left to keep out a diving header from Giggs following a right-wing cross from Wesley Brown.
Then David Beckham flashed a 25-yard effort just wide as United threatened to take control.
But Leicester's fighting spirit dragged them back into the match and Schmeichel came out to save at the feet of Muzzy Izzet before Zagorakis brought them level in spectacular style.
Steve Guppy squared the ball to Zagorakis 25 yards out and his right-footed rocket shot beat the dive of Schmeichel all ends up as it flew into the roof of the net.
The Foxes then squandered a golden chance to take the lead when Guppy's left wing centre found Pontus Kaamark unmarked at the far post but from eight yards out he drilled his shot over the bar.
That proved to be costly for United moved up a gear after the break to kill off the game with three goals in 18 minutes.
Cole restored the lead for the Red Devils in the 47th minute when he latched onto a long pass from Giggs, outpaced Gerry Taggart and drilled a low cross-shot past Keller.
Cole then shot over from close range after a lack of control by Steve Walsh in trying to cut out a centre from Blomqvist.
But it hardly seemed to matter as United added two more goals in double quick time.
First Yorke turned past Walsh and threaded a pass into the Cole whose 61st-minute shot flew under the body of Keller.
Then a misjudgement by Keller presented Yorke with his second goal of thegame.
The American tried to shepherd a long ball from Irwin behind the goalline but Yorke nipped in and turned his shot home from a narrow angle.
Leicester rallied and in the 73rd minute Walsh gave them a ray of hope when he bundled a fiercely driven cross-shot from Guppy over the line.
But back came United and with six minutes left Yorke completed his hat-trick from close range after Cole's shot had rebounded off a post into his path.
Then in injury-time Jaap Stam completed the rout when he side-footed home Beckham's cross from close range with the Leicester defence again nowhere to be seen.

Subject: FERGIE HAILS THE MIGHT OF DWIGHT
By John Curtis, PA Sport
Manchester United manager Alex Ferguson saluted the goal power of Dwight
Yorke and Andy Cole as they destroyed a depleted Leicester at Filbert Street.
Yorke grabbed his first hat-trick for United to take his goal tally for the
campaign to 15 and Cole weighted in with a double strike in United's 6-2
demolition of the home side.
Victory took the Red Devils in to second spot, above long-time leaders
Aston Villa, and they are now hot on the heels of current pace-setters
Chelsea.
Ferguson said: "The form of Cole and Yorke is becoming a potent force for us.
"They pose the kind of threat that will trouble anyone we come up against
make life so difficult.
We played Leicester at a good time as they had to put out a depleted side -
and in the first half we did not perform anywhere near as well as we can do.
"But the lads shook themselves up and in the end Yorke and Cole could have
ended up with five goals each. The Leicester keeper Kasey Keller made two
fantastic saves.
"I'm very pleased with that result because Leicester are always difficult
opponents and I was happy to go in at half-time at 1-1. They just don't
give up but in the second half we did really well.
"It's the threat they pose and the way they understand each other which
makes Yorke and Cole so very effective.
"What we are looking to do now is pile up the points while we do not have
any European games on the horizon."
Leicester midfielder Neil Lennon said: "At 2-1 and even 3-1 we were still
in the game but we then conceded three quick goals and, no matter who the
opposition are, you can't afford to make mistakes like we did.
"It so happened that it was Andy Cole and Dwight Yorke who took advantage
and they have to be the best strike duo in the country at present."
But Lennon insisted: "We have to bounce back from this. It's a massive
month for us with an FA Cup tie next weekend and the Worthington Cup
semi-final looming."
Leicester were without the suspended defensive duo of Matt Elliott and
Frank Sinclair while striker Emile Heskey was also ruled out with flu.

Subject: Cruyff loan agreed ««
Manchester United's Dutch international, Jordi Cruyff, has
completed the details of a loan move to the Spanish club, Celta
Vigo.
He will stay with them until the end of the current season,
although United have insisted upon the option to recall him at
short notice if required.
The Reds have also opened negotiations with Swedish club,
Gothenburg, hoping to create an 'exchange' arrangement for the
mutual benefit. This is similar to their relationship with Royal
Antwerp of Belgium, by which the clubs agree to certain
exchange deals, with United also having first option to purchase
any emerging talent.
Gothenburg President, Gunnar Larsson, explained : "It is true
that we are in discussions with Manchester United about forming
an alliance. There are still many things to organise and agree,
but there is a strong possibility that we can come to a mutually
agreeable arrangement. The prospects are very exciting for both
clubs."
