Johnsen eyeing Millennium return «« Teamtalk Ronny Johnsen is planning a Millennium comeback for United and hopes to be named next week in the 23-man squad going to Brazil. The Norwegian is hoping to get back into first team action early in the New Year, after stepping up his training schedule this week, and will target the trip to Rio. As TEAMtalk reported yesterday, Johnsen has at last returned to full training and has joined the rest of his team mates for the first time this season. He has spent a frustrating five months on the sidelines following surgery on both his knees. He had the operations in Norway at the start of the season when a summer of rest and physiotherapy failed to cure tendinitis which had been troubling him for some time. Johnsen confesses that continuing to play worsened the problem and led to the double op. Now he hopes to win back his place in the side, and re-kindle the defensive partnership he formed with Jaap Stam last season. The central defender was involved in 35 games during last season's treble-winning campaign, and was one of only five players to feature in the three trophy clinching games last May as United secured the Premiership, FA Cup and European Cup during the ten day finale. Sir Alex Ferguson is expected to finalise his squad for the January jaunt after the West Ham game this weekend. The manager faces a tough decision on who to leave out of the squad as almost every single player at the club is apparently keen to go, although Phil Neville would probably rather be able to take his honeymoon. Neville gets married after the Sunderland game on December 28, a few days before United fly out.

Player Loans Curtis - Clegg Clegg loan request «« Ipswich Town have asked Sir Alex Ferguson if they can have reserve team captain Michael Clegg on a three-month loan basis. United have not given an answer yet but there is a chance Clegg, 22, will be allowed to join the First Division promotion hopefuls. United are not short of right-backs at the moment, the emergence of Danny Higginbotham to first team contention means Gary Neville, Phil Neville and Denis Irwin can all play there. Ferguson may see George Burley's bid as an ideal chance for Clegg to build up his experience in a highly competitive environment, he would also return in time for United's next Champions' League match against Bordeaux in March. Ipswich are desperate for defensive cover after recent signing Gary Croft was jailed for a motoring offence. ------------------------------------ Curtis loan extended «« Sir Alex Ferguson has agreed to let England Under-21 defender John Curtis stay on loan at Barnsley until the end of January. The United defender's initial loan spell was due to end next week. But Ferguson has agreed to let the 21-year-old remain for another month. Curtis, who has impressed during his time with Barnsley, is expected to win a recall this weekend for the game against Walsall. He missed last week's FA Cup tie at Wimbledon as he was not registered in time. Dave Bassett is expected to explore the possibility of signing Curtis full-scale at the end of the loan period. But the fee quoted by Manchester United is likely to be out of Barnsley's price-range, it's understood that Ferguson values the player at around £1.5 million.

BECKHAM NAMED IN ALL-STAR TEAM England midfielder David Beckham has been included in a European 'all-star team' selected by more than 200 journalists from across the continent on the basis of performances during the Euro 2000 qualifying campaign. Chelsea defender Marcel Desailly (89 votes) and former Manchester United goalkeeper Peter Schmeichel (72 votes) were also included in the Eurocard-Mastercard team, with Italy's Paolo Maldini (117 votes) being the most widely-selected player. No carnival in Brazil for United fans By John Drayton Manchester United have warned supporters to be extra careful at next month's World Club Championship in Brazil because of the country's high crime rate. The murder rate in Rio de Janeiro is a staggering 55 per 100,000 people compared to just two per 100,000 in London. Club secretary Ken Merrett, who has just returned from Brazil, was given the shocking statistics by the British Consulate in Rio and he has appealed to fans to be vigilant. 'The British Consulate is very anxious to get the message across that Brazil is a very dangerous place,' he said in the club magazine. 'If supporters are going they should be very careful. Muggings are commonplace and quite random, so supporters are being warned not to go off the beaten track.' United are not organising any official trips for the inaugural FIFA tournament, which lasts from January 5-14, but they do have a supply of tickets for fans who want to go to Brazil. 'The club simply wants everyone to know that Rio is a place where you could come up against the kind of dangers you would not experience on a European outing,' added Merrett. 'You must be careful when you get into a taxi and make certain it is an authorised vehicle. Special buses will be laid on to take supporters from the hotels to the Maracana stadium.Fans should not travel to matches on the Metro.'

United in 'Unlawful Kidnapping' shock! United run risk with schoolboy plane trips By Alan Nixon (Independent) Manchester United are bending Premier League regulations by signing the teenage prospect Kalum Mooniaruck. The club's manager, Sir Alex Ferguson, has spotted the potential of the 15-year-old midfielder and he is appearing for United's Under-17 Academy team, despite the fact that he comes from Bishop's Stortford. United fly Mooniaruck from London on a weekly basis and put him up in digs in Sale in an attempt to circumvent the strict rules that any schoolboy must live within 90 minutes of the ground. Mooniaruck clearly does not and the Premier League may ask United about the youngster, who strictly should be attached to a London club. The talented teenager is still at school but will go to Old Trafford permanently and is tipped to become first-team regular. United have gone to extraordinary lengths to sign him but Premier League rules state that the 90-minute distance between player and academy has to be travelled by car. Adrian Cook, a Premier League spokesman, said: "You can get from Newcastle from London by air in an hour but the new rule relates to being able to drive in that time. Anything else would be illegal although nothing has been brought to our attention in this case. The rule is designed for clubs to bring through their local talent." United do not want to lose Mooniaruck and may even buy a house for his family and find him a new school, a costly exercise but one the club considers worthwhile. The chairman, Martin Edwards, revealed recently that the Premier League Academy rules were potentially a problem for United and that going into the property market to put up their most-promising youngsters was the best way round it. Meanwhile, Mooniaruck, who already has a boot deal with Nike, is playing for United in the Academy league and standing out among other hopefuls up to two years' his senior. Now that United have a hold on him they will not want to let go. The trade among teenage players these days is growing, with some attracting high valuations. However, the Premier League may want to ask questions about Mooniaruck's presence at Old Trafford. Even Michael Schumacher would struggle to make the drive from Essex to Manchester in 90 minutes.

ROY: MY NEW DEAL EASED PRESSURE ROY KEANE last night shrugged off the burden of being Britain's highest-paid footballer - and revealed the part Manchester United boss Alex Ferguson played in keeping him at Old Trafford. Keane's new contract will net him a staggering pounds 50,000 a week, but the United skipper insisted that far from heaping more pressure on his shoulders, the deal has given him a new lease of life. "People have said I will be under more pressure, but I feel that the pressure has eased," he said. "The moment I signed the contract a weight was lifted from my mind. "All the speculation had been getting to me. It affected my mood and my performances." Though Keane has enjoyed a golden goalscoring run, he believes his performances during the contract wrangling were below par. "I wasn't at my best. I knew that any time I missed a tackle or lost a ball, people were questioning whether I was 100 per cent right. As captain of the club I really felt that pressure." Keane revealed that the efforts of Ferguson played a key role in keeping him at United. "The manager did a lot of work behind the scenes which I will never forget," he said. "For six months he has been pressuring the club on my behalf. I owe him a lot for that. "Over the years I've had my fair share of problems, but he has always been good to me." Mirror

Edwards owns shares in Leicester - report «« Reports claim United chief executive Martin Edwards has owned 100,000 shares in Leicester City for over two years. Edwards acquired his stake when the East Midlands club were first floated on the stock exchange in October 1997 and, although they represent a mere 0.3 per cent of Leicester, they are bound to cause controversy among the fans. Spurs boss George Graham was recently criticised for holding shares in Arsenal while it emerged that Gunners striker Davor Suker owned a tiny stake in United. It is interesting that the story has become public only a day after the United board appointed three new non-executive directors - a move which could reduce Edwards' power base at Old Trafford. Leicester shares have not exactly out-performed the United stock Edwards has been reducing for the past few years, they peaked at 110p in 1997 but currently stand at 45p.

TAIBI: I'LL FIGHT FOR UNITED PLACE Out-of-favour goalkeeper Massimo Taibi is determined to stay at Manchester United and fight for his place. The Italian, who has just returned from a training stint with a former coach in Naples, has been linked with moves away from Old Trafford - just months after his £4.5million transfer from Venezia. Taibi, who has not played for United since the 5-0 drubbing at Chelsea in October, is adamant he will battle with Mark Bosnich and Raimond van der Gouw for the goalkeeper's jersey. "The newspapers are writing always that Massimo is going, but I've settled very well here in Manchester, my family is happy and that's not a problem," he said. "At the start Massimo played well, but now Bosnich and van der Gouw are playing very well and I'm not playing. "Of course I prefer to play, but Bosnich prefers to play and van der Gouw prefers to play. "That's normal at a big club with three goalkeepers and when the manager needs Massimo, Massimo is very ready to play." Taibi, who is Britain's most expensive goalkeeper, enjoyed his spell in Naples and it has helped restore his confidence which took such a battering at Stamford Bridge
