Barry Comment:
Important info on Rio from Mike Dobbin:

Re the tournament in Brazil, United have not yet announced ticket
information, but have asked branches for estimates of numbers required.
Contact United immediately and ask to be given ticket information
when this is available, qouting your United membership number.
If you are not a member then this may be a problem if they are supplying
tickets to members only.

Ken Merrett has just visited Rio to check out the arrangements, and adivised
members at the branch conference on Saturday that they should think
carefully before going to the tournament, since Rio is an extremely
dangerous place, with a very high murder rate.

UNITED DUO ON COMEBACK TRAIL By David Anderson, PA Sport Teddy Sheringham and Nicky Butt have made successful comebacks to give Manchester United manager Sir Alex Ferguson the kind of selection headache he likes. Sheringham, who had been out for five weeks with a calf injury, picked up the man-of-the-match award in the reserves' 1-1 draw with Blackburn at Bury's Gigg Lane on Tuesday night. Butt gave a typically committed display in midfield on his return following his hernia operation and both players could be in contention for the squad to face Derby at Pride Park on Saturday. South Africa international Quinton Fortune, who has been dogged by injuries since he joined United, also came through the FA Premier Reserve League match on his return from an ankle complaint. Gary Hamilton gave Rovers the lead before United equalised with a controversial goal five minutes from time when the assistant referee ruled that Jonathan Greening's chip had crossed the line despite goalkeeper Alan Fettis' attempts to keep it out. A furious Fettis was sent off for taking his protests too far along with Blackburn defender Keith Brown who was dismissed for dissent. © PA Sporting Life

KIDS GO DOWN IN DERBY DOUBLE There was dancing in the streets of Moss Side last Saturday afternoon following Manchester City's Academy double over United. Well, that's something of an exaggeration, but there's little doubt that there must have been some jollification after both the Blues junior sides had put one over the Reds. Rivalry isn't skin-deep in football and it is always extra special to get the upper hand when coming face to face with your closest neighbours. That is doubly true in a football-mad city like Manchester. And, as far as the supporters are concerned, it doesn't matter whether it's first team, reserves or juniors, when Red meets Blue, it's an us and them scenario with victory the acceptable outcome. True, there is slightly more kudos attached to winning a big league or cup game, but it's equally true to say that those United supporters who were at either The Cliff or Ayrshire Road on Saturday will no have enjoyed the outcome very much. Both teams went down 2-1 with Danny Webber netting for the Under-19s, whilst Daniel Nardiello scored from the penatly-spot for the younger side. That was the Under-17s' fourth game without a win, a sequence that has included three defeats. While the Under-19s have managed to gather up just one point from their last three outings. Both teams will be hoping for a change of luck next week when they entertain Newcastle United in another double-header in Salford.

RIVAL SALUTES BIRTHDAY BOY Tuesday, November 16, 1999 11:40 Paul Scholes should be opening his biggest ever haul of birthday cards today (Tuesday). The Manchester United star is flavour of the month in England following his two goals in the Euro 2000 play-off on Saturday. In fact, he's so popular that even the captain of Liverpool is singing his praises! "Scholesy is complete," admires Jamie Redknapp. "He can finish, tackle, he can head. He's a fantastic player." Playing through the centre of midfield, Scholes overshadowed the international return of Redknapp, who was forced to play wide on the left in the 2-0 win at Hampden Park. But the Liverpool man seems happy to have played the supporting role to his midfield rival. "Kevin Keegan named the team and just said he wanted Scholesy getting in the box," reveals Redknapp. "That's exactly how he planned it and it worked that way. It was quite clever really. "Someone who can attack like Scholesy is so hard to pick up. I don't know how you man-mark him." That might be something Redknapp has to worry about when Liverpool next visit Old Trafford. But until then, the two midfielders are England team-mates for the second leg against Scotland, to be played on Wednesday at Wembley. Good luck lads...and here's to a happy birthday Paul.

BOSNICH NOT RULED OUT OF SATURDAY CLASH (365) Mark Bosnich has had tests on his injured hamstring on his return to Manchester United today. The goalkeeper checked straight into the treatment room at the Cliff training ground when he reported back from international duty with Australia. United have not ruled Bosnich out of Saturday's Premiership clash with Derby at Pride Park and they should know more when his test results come through.
