Barry Comment:
Goalkeeper Jimmy Nielsen and Denmark lost 4-1 to England U21's last night.

Subject: Sir Alex will have to offer Ole Gunnar + £15m if he is to land Sol Cambell United may offer cash plus Ole for Sol «« Sir Alex Ferguson will have to offer Ole Gunnar Solskjaer plus £15m, if he is to land Spurs defender Sol Campbell. United offered £15 million for Campbell before the Champions' League deadline on August 31, but the White Hart Lane outfit rejected the bid because they still hope to tie Campbell to a long-term contract. However, the England defender has yet to agree terms of a new contract and Spurs's need for a striker has been sharpened following the continued fitness question marks hanging over Les Ferdinand and Chris Armstrong. Solskjaer has never enjoyed a regular run in the first team at United and Sunday's appearance against Chelsea on the left wing highlighted to the Norwegian that he will never be more than a squad player. But if Ferguson is prepared to sacrifice the player who enjoys cult status at Old Trafford, Spurs will be tempted by an offer of £15m plus the former Molde striker in exchange for Campbell. Spurs agreed a £5.5 million deal for Solskjaer at the start of last season but the player rejected the move. They then, reportedly, tabled a £7.5 million bid almost exactly a year later but that was turned down. However, Solskjaer has never shown signs of impatience or unhappiness at Old Trafford and, with over three-and-a-half years left on his contract, he is in no rush to move on after already writing his name in United folklore. If anything, it is Spurs who appear to be touting the swap and not United because they know they will struggle to keep Campbell who only has just over 18 months left on his contract. The price-tag is way over the top and everyone knows it is coming down all the time as Campbell stalls on a new agreement. London sources claim Campbell is currently paid £12,000-a-week, less than David May, but Spurs will make him their top offer of £25,000-a-week. United appear to have made the first firm and realistic offer for Campbell but a host of Italian and top Spanish clubs will soon follow. Interestingly, Campbell has not played in Spurs's UEFA Cup run this season and would still be eligible for United in the Champions League if a deal was done before the next round - however, the chances are very unlikely.

Subject: MEN - Waiting game Sheringham could move back to London Manchester United News - Waiting game Sheringham could move back to London By Stuart Mathieson A TRIO of Manchester United stars are entering into the contract twilight zone at Old Trafford. Denis Irwin, Teddy Sheringham and Jordi Cruyff are all in their last year of their deals and it is between now and the New Year that the club normally begin talks with such players with a view to offering new terms for next season. United boss Sir Alex Ferguson has yet to forward his plans to the Old Trafford board but the futures of all three is likely to be occupying his mind. ``Nothing has been discussed with the manager yet,'' says United chairman Martin Edwards. ``He will want to make his decision in due course and if the manager wants us to start negotiations then we will begin talks with the players involved.'' Irwin is the most likely to want and to be offered another United deal to take him into the millennium. The Republic of Ireland full back is currently the club's longest serving player and will be 34 at the end of the month but there are no signs that the veteran is on the decline. Last December Irwin, who has no agent, began his own negotiations with the club as his last deal entered its final months. With a green light from Fergie the Irishman was offered and accepted last February a year's extension by Martin Edwards which will expire next summer. The player said then he hoped it wouldn't be his last and it would appear doubtful that it will be with a possible 12 months more eventually on offer.
