SCHOLES SWIPE AT SIMEONE:
United's ginger assassin Paul Scholes has stirred the Champions' League
fires with a side-swipe at Inter Milan midfielder Diego Simeone. The two
players came face-to-face in last summer's World Cup, and the England man
has slated the Argentinian for his part in David Beckham's controversial
sending-off.

Subject: Bill McArthur's Day By Day Diary: UK December 1998 Pt2/3 Bill McArthur's Day By Day Diary: UK December 1998 Pt2/3 ----------------------------------------------- Story incl "Pics" at http://www.red11.org/mufc/billdiary98.htm Sunday Dec 13-1998 When I woke up, Barry was already in the kitchen with Jack. A cup of coffee and breakfast was much appreciated. We relaxed for a little while and headed into Epsom to do a bit of shopping. Barry got the phone out again, and we gave our graphics man Sam Hayward a call. It was great to speak with Sam, and unfortunately he was working that night and wouldn't be able to meet us at the airport to see Barry off home again. I took the opportunity to thank Sam for all the great work he's done for us at www.red11.org. We talked about the possibility of the three of us meeting up in England next time, and had a few laughs. That night Jack dropped us off for the return trip. We queued up for checkin, and reached the counter only to be told that Barry had to pickup his ticket from the other counter first before he could check in! DOH! So, back in line we went, and Barry was then all set. We headed to the bar for a final pint before parting company. The phone came out again, and Barry had Pete Hargreaves on the phone to warn him of my arrival in Manchester later that night. Pete had been a superb friend to me last year when he gave me a lift to both matches from my cousin's house. He offered to do the same again, and I accepted with delight. Pete is truly a great Manchester United host, and I can't thank him enough for all of his help when I'm in Manchester. The next call was to Linda, who assured me that she would be in the Throstle's Nest Wed night before the Chelsea match, so we arranged to meet each other there shortly after 5pm. With the important calls done, we finished our pints, shook hands, and went our separate ways. Barry was off to Denmark, and I was off back into London for a train to Manchester. As I got back on the Heathrow Express, and forked over another tenner, I reflected on how Barry had lived up to every expectation of the "Mad Dane" I was expecting, and how bloody expensive this train was. When I arrived back at Paddington, I was virtual expert at the ticket machine, and followed nearly the exact same sequence of events I had done 36 hours earlier, minus the Info Girl and unexpectedly large queue for tickets. I got off the train at Euston station, and had to walk over to the train section carrying my suitcase. It was now that I wished I'd had one of those wheel-trolley things for pulling my case, since my arms were going numb with strain. I parked my arse down on my case and sat in front of the huge board listing all of the trains, and remembered what Mike Dobbin had said to me in one of his emails. He thought that I could probably make the earlier 8 o'clock hour train instead of the 9 o'clock hour train that he had booked for me, but we took the safe bet just in case. As it turned out, he was right, I could have made the earlier train, but I didn't mind the rest. When the hour rolled around I called my cousin in Manchester to tell her I was on my way, and she told me she would leave a key outside in a disclosed location for me, since she was on an early shift in the morning and was off to bed. Sounds easy enough, I said. When I got to Piccadilly Station, the queue for taxis was enormous. I finally worked my way to the front of the queue, and poured myself into the cab. I told the driver the address, and he had no idea where that was. I had been there last year, and had this exact same problem, so I was well prepared. I produced my Manchester A-Z map book before he could ask me another question, and pointed to my cousin's street. He took the book and we were on our way. When I finally reached my cousin's house it was 12:30am, and she was well asleep. I had to wait for the cab to bugger off so I could search for this key which was hidden outside. After 5 minutes of looking all over where she said the key would be, I contemplated sleeping on the doorstep, since I had a week or so worth of clothes in my case to keep me warm. Just as I was about to give up, I found the key and headed inside. It doesn't take me long to fall asleep, and tonight was no exception. Monday Dec 14-1998 When I woke up, my cousin had called to tell me she was on her way home from work already. It was noon. Obviously I was tired. I phoned Duncan Drasdo to let him know that I was indeed in Manchester, and was looking forward to meeting him on Wednesday night. Duncan was the reason I had a ticket for the match, since his wife couldn't make it that night. We arranged to meet at the Throstles before the match Wed night. I then called Pete Hargreaves to let him know I had arrived, remind him of my cousin's address and get a time from him on when he'd be coming to lift me on Wednesday night. No answer at Pete's, so I left a message on his machine. The rest of the day was spent in tourist mode with my cousins. This included a "Pub Quiz" night, during which I became the American geography and history expert, and I'm not even American!! We lost by a point, since I didn't know what year Elvis Presley was drafted. The fact that I was a Canadian saved me from a lynching, as I was apparently supposed to know the answer. I had to remind everyone that they should consider themselves lucky that I knew any American history at all, since I'm a Canadian! Final part tomorrow: www.red11.org Webmaster Meet Dec 1998 Pt 3/3 Cheers everyone! Bill McArthur Dec '98 "There's only ONE United - Manchester United!" http://www.red11.org/mufc/billdiary98.htm

Subject: LEICESTER v MANCHESTER UNITED preview Leicester Team News Top scorer Emile Heskey is struggling to be fit. The 21-year-old is suffering from a heavy cold and was ordered to stay away from the team's training ground today. Central defenders Frank Sinclair and Matt Elliott are both out suspended and recent signing Andy Impey faces a late fitness test on an injured calf. Team (from): Keller, Arphexad, Taggart, Walsh, Izzet, Lennon, Heskey, Parker, Guppy, Kaamark, Campbell, Ullathorne, Marshall, Fenton, Impey, Wilson, Cottee, Zagorakis, Oakes. The Leicester View ''Obviously everyone talks about Yorke and Cole but they (United) have quality running right through the side. Every player is international quality. But we have always played well against them and in the last few seasons our record has been pretty good. The unfortunate thing is that you can't win football matches with just a good record, but whatever side we put out we will give it a go. It's one of those games that the players and fans look forward to all season so there is no problem getting the lads up for it.'' - Martin O'Neill United Team News Alex Ferguson has virtually a full-strength squad to choose from. England trio Paul Scholes, David Beckham and Gary Neville are back in contention following their mid-season breathers, but definitely out is Teddy Sheringham, who has a knee injury. Ferguson may give Peter Schmeichel an extra weekend off and continue with Raimond van der Gouw in goal. Team (from): Schmeichel, Van der Gouw, G Neville, P Neville, Brown, Irwin, Johnsen, Stam, Berg, Butt, Keane, Scholes, Giggs, Beckham, Blomqvist, Cole, Yorke, Solskjaer. The United View ''Leicester are tough competitors and are very difficult to play against. Nobody enjoys going there because they always raise their game against the big sides and we know that because we have experienced that against them. But if we can continue this run of ours, which has a bit of consistency about it, then we will have a good chance.'' - Alex Ferguson THE STATS Last season: Leicester 0 Man Utd 0 Man Utd 0 Leicester 1 Last five League matches: Leicester W L W D D Man Utd D L W D W Top scorers: Dwight Yorke, Andy Cole (Man Utd) 13 Emile Heskey, Tony Cottee (Leicester) 9 Match odds: H 9-4 A Evs D 9-4 Ref: S Dunn (Bristol) From Official Leicester City Site http://www.lcfc.co.uk CITY GUTTED BY INJURY AND ILLNESS LEICESTER City may face hopeful champions Manchester United on Saturday with only the shell of their strongest side available. City take on United infront of a sell-out Filbert Street crowd already without Frank Sinclair and Matt Elliott through suspension. But at today's pre-match press briefing O'Neill revealed that at least three other regular team members could be ruled out for the crunch clash. "Emile Heskey is our main worry," said an exasperated O'Neill. "We had to send him home yesterday with the flu and are just hoping now that he will come through in time for tomorrow's game. "Neil Lennon has been complaining of back problems all week and this morning twinged a hamstring. These two things are often linked and we'll just have to see how he is tomorrow before the game. "And Andrew Impey is also struggling with a calf strain so all in all we could be without key players in all areas. If that's the case I may have to commit suicide." On top of this O'Neill knows that United will be particularly hard to beat tomorrow. Although he knows the side and the crowd will be going all out for a victory, and that their record against Alex Ferguson's men in the past has been fairly good, it will be a real battle tomorrow if they are going to get anything out of the game with the handicaps enforced upon them. "We've played reasonably well against them in the past and the lads are reasonably positive. "United are in excellent form and proved their calibre against West Ham last weekend. It's the turn of the year and they will be turning their attention to the title and they are perfectly placed to have a real chance at it. "It's not going to be easy, but then the Premiership never is." Please click below to hear Martin's comments: http://www.lcfc.co.uk/m990115a.ram

Subject: UNITED TRIO RETURN FROM THEIR REST Manchester United boss Alex Ferguson has virtually a full-strength squad to choose from for the trip to Leicester. http://www.football365.co.uk/homeground/manchester_united/news_111755.htm UNITED TRIO RETURN FROM THEIR REST Manchester United boss Alex Ferguson has virtually a full-strength squad to choose from for the trip to Leicester. Team (from): Schmeichel, Van der Gouw, G Neville, P Neville, Brown, Irwin, Johnsen, Stam, Berg, Butt, Keane, Scholes, Giggs, Beckham, Blomqvist, Cole, Yorke, Solskjaer _________________________________ FERGUSON PLOTS TO OUTFOX O'NEILL Alex Ferguson is confident his Manchester United side can continue their New Year renaissance when they go Fox-hunting at Leicester. http://www.football365.co.uk/homeground/manchester_united/news_111795.htm FERGUSON PLOTS TO OUTFOX O'NEILL Alex Ferguson is confident his Manchester United side can continue their New Year renaissance when they go Fox-hunting at Leicester. Martin O'Neill's men have become a bogey side for United in the last couple of seasons. The Foxes have won one and drawn three of their last four encounters and Ferguson is well aware of the perils of a visit to Filbert Street. But he heads for the east Midlands in bullish mood because of United's return to form this month following back-to-back wins over Middlesbrough and West Ham. ''Leicester are tough competitors and are very difficult to play against,'' he said. ''Nobody enjoys going there because they always raise their game against the big sides and we know that because we have experienced that against them. ''But if we can continue this run of ours, which has a bit of consistency about it, then we will have a good chance.'' United have the added incentive of knowing that victory will take them back to the top of the table, providing Chelsea fail to beat Coventry at home. Ferguson, though, is more concerned with how his own players perform. ''You always hope those around you slip up, just like they will be hoping we slip up too,'' he said. ''What's more important to me is that if we continue our form we are good enough and we have the experience and depth of squad to handle anything.'' Ferguson may make changes now that rested World Cup stars David Beckham, Gary Neville and Paul Scholes are back, although he may give Peter Schmeichel another weekend off and continue with Raimond van der Gouw in goal. Definitely out is Teddy Sheringham who has injured his knee in training. Denis Irwin also feels United are getting back to their best following a tough December. He said: ''We went through the month of December without playing very well and we had a lot of matches against tough opposition,'' he said. ''That took its toll towards the end of the month, but in our last two or three games we've found a bit of form again.'' Meanwhile, Irwin claims he will reluctantly quit United if he is not happy with his new contract offer. Irwin, whose current deal expires in the summer, has begun talks with United, but knows he could cash in on a lucrative move under the Bosman ruling. The 33-year-old Republic of Ireland defender, who has been at Old Trafford since 1990, will only re-sign if he is satisfied with the terms offered. Irwin's stance comes in the same week skipper Roy Keane claimed he would leave when his contract ends if he were not satisfied with his new deal. ''Ideally nobody wants to leave here, but as things are being quoted on the back pages whether it's Roy or me we both want the right deal to stay,'' said Irwin. ''Manchester United are a big club and nobody wants to leave it, but there's a lot of money floating around in football at the moment. We hope to sort everything out in the contract negotiations and hopefully that will be soon.'' ______________________________ IRWIN: I'LL STAY FOR RIGHT DEAL Denis Irwin will reluctantly quit Manchester United if he is not happy with his new contract offer. http://www.football365.co.uk/homeground/manchester_united/news_111638.htm IRWIN: I'LL STAY FOR RIGHT DEAL Denis Irwin will reluctantly quit Manchester United if he is not happy with his new contract offer. Irwin would like to remain at Old Trafford when his current one-year deal expires in the summer and he has already had talks with chairman Martin Edwards about a new agreement. But the 33-year-old defender knows he could cash in on a lucrative move to another club under the Bosman ruling and he will only re-sign with United if he is satisfied with the terms offered. Ideally Irwin, who arrived in a £625,000 move from Oldham in June 1990, would like a two-year contract which would entitle him to a money-spinning testimonial. The Republic of Ireland international's determination to hold out for the right deal comes in the same week skipper Roy Keane also claimed he might leave if he were not satisfied with his new contract. ''I spoke to the chairman last month and I've been talking to him since so hopefully something will be sorted out,'' said Irwin. ''Ideally nobody wants to leave here, but as things are being quoted on the back pages, whether it's Roy or me, we both want the right deal to stay. There's a lot of money floating around in football at the moment. ''Manchester United are a big club and nobody wants to leave it, but we hope to sort these things out in the contract negotiations and hopefully soon.'' _________________________________ MODERN PLAYERS DON'T GIVE A TOSS - BEST George Best has hit out at modern-day players, branding them overpaid, lazy millionaires. http://www.football365.co.uk/homeground/manchester_united/news_111581.htm MODERN PLAYERS DON'T GIVE A TOSS - BEST George Best has hit out at modern-day players, branding them overpaid, lazy millionaires. The Manchester United legend also claimed that many are tempted to drink heavily or dabble with drugs because football does not give them a big enough ''buzz''. ''Footballers today are millionaires by the time they're 22 or 23. More and more of them are going out and looking for something to give them a buzz outside football, be it gambling, drugs or booze,'' said Best. ''It seems that because they're on big money the game isn't giving them the buzz they need any more. ''I was on peanuts when I first got into the first team. I was earning four pounds, one shilling and ninepence, but money wasn't important to me. ''I got my buzz from playing, from being on the stage, doing something I loved and was good at. ''Players now have a groin injury for months and months and I often think that they don't really give a toss whether they're playing or not because they're getting paid anyway. ''When I had injuries I played through the pain barrier when the whistle went at 3pm on a Saturday. But what does it matter when you've got a couple of million in the bank,'' he told Talk Radio Sportzone. ___________________________________ TERRY CAN COOKE UP A TREAT FOR CITY Manchester City have received clearance for Manchester United winger Terry Cooke to make his debut against Fulham at Maine Road tomorrow. http://www.football365.co.uk/homeground/manchester_united/news_111711.htm TERRY CAN COOKE UP A TREAT FOR CITY Manchester City have received clearance for Manchester United winger Terry Cooke to make his debut against Fulham at Maine Road tomorrow. Cooke will follow in the footsteps of Denis Law, Brian Kidd, and Peter Barnes as players who have appeared for both Manchester clubs. Having just completed a spell at Wrexham, Cooke has joined City on a three-month loan as manager Joe Royle bids to boost his flagging promotion challenge. Cooke said: ''This is a massive club. We saw the support they have when they beat us at Wrexham on Boxing Day. ''This club should be in the Premiership. Some Premiership clubs struggle to get the size of support Manchester City demand.'' Cooke has fully recovered now after missing virtually a season when he snapped a cruciate ligament in a United reserve game. He added: ''I had no hesitation in joining Manchester City. And I can promise the fans I will give 100% and I hope they will appreciate that.''

Subject: Internet Football - Red Devils Vs Internet Irons This is probably the first time I didn't get around to e-mailing the list in advance about the fixture , it was arranged over the Xmas period and it was quite a hectic time ... To tell you the truth , out of all the mailing list games I've arranged I've had very little response from my requests for players or supporters. I can't remember one instance where anybody has been interested enough to simply come and watch us ! In order to play more games and make it more enjoyable I really need some help. What I would really like is somebody who perhaps doesn't want to play but has got a good football head and can take over as manager , they don't have to do any organising just be there to watch the game , advise on play and make substitutions which in these type of games are often rolling. Sometimes if we have spare players we are required to run the line or even ref - having somebody not playing can make sure the players don't spend too long on these duties. For example , this Sunday the West Ham team ref'd the first half and it was up to the reds to ref the second half. With the four subs we had at any one time then it would be reasonable to think that the duty could be shared for 10 or so minutes each. This was not the case and I was stuck ref'ing for forty minutes when I really wanted to play , after all , I had put a lot of effort in organising the game ! I also want somebody to take photo's and record goal scorer's etc ... (the West Ham fans had people doing this) Everything you want to know about the internet team can be found at http:\www.geocities.com\sunsetstrip\palms\4814 It's not quite up to date but hopefully when I get myself sorted out it will include the results of the last couple of games and a revised fixture list. On the subject of future games there is chance of at least a 5-a-side with Leicester City's 'Electric Yetis' this Saturday , if you are already travelling to Leicester why not go early - miss the traffic and have a bit of a game beforehand. E-mail me if you are interested about this or any other games. BTW We beat the West Ham fans 4-3. Doug 'Stressed' Internet Team Manager

Subject: BBC United back to full power Old Trafford - given the all clear Manchester United have been given the all-clear to use Old Trafford's North Stand for next Sunday's FA Cup clash with Liverpool. Trafford Metropolitan Borough Council, the stadium's licensing authority, had threatened to close the stand on safety grounds following last Sunday's power failure during the West Ham game. Thousands of fans had to be evacuated through the emergency staircases after the emergency lighting went out in the stand's four stair towers. But electricity company NORWEB are laying extra cables to the ground and United are boosting the emergency power supply to ensure there is no repeat of those scenes. This work should be completed before next Sunday and Allan Roberts, assistant director at the council's engineering and planning department, claims once they are satisfied with the improvements the stand can be used. "The council are satisfied that the package of measures to be taken by Manchester United will cover any foreseeable circumstances and will prevent a recurrence of the difficulties at the West Ham game," he said. "Providing this work is done and we inspect it before the game we see no problem." United have completed their investigation of the powercut and it was caused by an unprecedented demand for electricity from the stadium, coupled with the failure of a key piece of equipment within the switchroom.

Manchester United are a big club and nobody wants to leave it, but we hope to sort these things out in the contract negotiations and hopefully soon.''

Subject: United stretch net to Gothenburg United stretch net to Gothenburg By Ken Lawrence Friday, January 15, 1999 Manchester United have opened negotiations with Gothenburg to enter an exchange deal similar to the one they have set up in Belgium. Discussions with the club that knocked Alex Ferguson's side out of the Champions League in 1994 have been ongoing for more than four months as United attempt to continue their networking policy. They already have a financial interest in Royal Antwerp and, in exchange for regular subsidies, either club can loan players while United have first option to buy any promising new stars. United are working on a similar strategy with Gothenburg, though it is understood there will be no financial agreement between them. Gothenburg president Gunnar Larsson said: 'It is true that we have been having discussions about forming an alliance with United.' Talks began unofficially last September, when Ferguson went to Sweden to open a new training complex at the Gothenburg club. Larsson, a guest of United at two recent matches, said: 'There are still many things to organise and to agree on but there is a strong possibility that we will come to an arrangement that will be beneficial to ourselves and to United. The prospects are very exciting for both sides.' Jordi Cruyff last night completed his loan move to Celta Vigo in Spain. He will stay until the end of the season, although United have the option to recall him in April if required. morte.............. BREAKING NEWS - Saturday 16 January 1999 UNITED'S SWEDISH CONNECTION IFK Gothenburg claim they have opened talks with Manchester United to form a partnership similar to that the Old Trafford club has with Royal Antwerp. Under the deal United would have first refusal on any Gothenburg players available for transfer and the Swedish club would be able to take players on loan from Old Trafford. Gothenburg president Gunner Larsson said: "It is true that we have been having discussions about forming an alliance with United. There are still many things to organise and to agree on, but there is a strong possibility that we will come to an arrangement that will be beneficial to ourselves and to United." "The prospects are very exciting to both sides," he told the Daily Mail.

Subject: Ferguson's star school Daniel Taylor asks Leicester's wing-back about his days at Manchester United and the team-mates who also flew the nest Saturday January 16, 1999 May 12, 1993, was not a good day in the young life and career of Robbie Savage. It was not so much the car crash that left him in hospital for a week, but the bombshell that had prompted his near-fatal lapse of concentration behind the wheel. After five years as a Manchester United trainee, Savage's dreams of a career with his boyhood idols were dashed when he was summoned to Alex Ferguson's office to be told of his release. A case of thanks, but no thanks. "It was absolutely devastating. My heart was set on being a success at United," he recalls. "I came out in a daze. "I didn't know how I was going to tell my mum and dad so I phoned some mates and arranged to meet them at a local snooker hall. I couldn't stop thinking about my parents and I guess I wasn't concentrating. The next thing I know I had crashed and was in hospital: broken bones, cut head, no feeling in my arm, the lot." Almost six years later Savage is threatening to live up to Ferguson's parting words that he might - not literally - "come back to haunt him". Although he misses today's visit of United because of a knee injury, he is an integral part of the Leicester City team and will be sitting in the stand this afternoon harbouring thoughts of making it for next Saturday's visit of Coventry in the FA Cup. He made it to Filbert Street via Crewe Alexandra, where he played 77 league games before falling out with the manager Dario Gradi. He was signed by Martin O'Neill for £400,000 in July 1997. "It's hard to come back after being released. I was lucky that Crewe were willing to give me a chance, and that brought about the move to Leicester," he says. "Another of the lads who was released by United is now working as a £180-a-week mechanic, while I have lost touch with some of the others. They were all good footballers; it's sad because every one of them would have had the same ambitions as Ryan Giggs, but there's a thin line between success and failure." Savage played in United's 1992 FA Youth Cup side, who beat Crystal Palace 6-3 on aggregate in a two-leg final. Tutored by Eric Harrison, the team boasted Giggs, Nicky Butt and both Neville brothers; David Beckham was on the bench and Paul Scholes did not manage even that. "When you look at how many brilliant players have come through, there is no way you can ever criticise United," says Savage. "It says it all that Scholesy was never getting a game at that stage, and look at him now. Their youth system is second to none and I can only see it getting better and better. They have the right people in place to bring along the young players." Evidently so; Ferguson is on record as saying the secret of United's success is their youth development. However, keeping them happy at a club where seasoned internationals are struggling to make the squad is another matter. Keith Gillespie of Blackburn, Ben Thornley of Huddersfield and the Bradford goalkeeper Gary Walsh have all prospered since heading for pastures new, and others seem sure to follow. One of them is Terry Cooke, a talented left-side midfielder. Frustrated by his lack of opportunities after five years in the shadows, he has joined Manchester City for a three-month loan period and will make his debut against Fulham this afternoon. As for Savage, despite the furore over his infamous Maldini shirt-throwing incident he remains an established Wales international, all 14 of his caps taking pride of place in the front room of his grandmother's Wrexham home. And Savage, Lily to his team-mates, insists he will not be casting envious glances in the direction of his old chums this afternoon. "I'm pleased for them all, I really am," he says. "I still keep in touch with Giggsy, and you could see even then that Beckham had what it takes. "He came on as a substitute in the Youth Cup final. It was his first appearance in the side but you would never have known. Within a few minutes he had sent a cracker into the top corner from 30 yards; typical Becks." Four who went David Platt: Arrived in 84, aged 17, but given a free transfer in January 1985. Joined Crewe, playing 134 games before arriving at Aston Villa for £200,000 in 1988. Sold to Bari, Juventus and Sampdoria but joined Arsenal for £4.75m in 1995 and an aggregate in excess of £21m, a British record. Now coaching at Sampdoria. Former England captain who played 62 internationals. Keith Gillespie: Joined United, aged 13, and played in the same youth team as David Beckham and Gary Neville. He made his league debut while on loan at Wigan but enjoyed only seven starts for United before moving to Newcastle in 1995 as a £1 million makeweight in the Andy Cole deal. Signed for Blackburn Rovers last month for £2.35 million. Billy Garton: Salford-born, made his United debut at 19. Played 49 games before retiring aged 25 with ME. Made his last appearance in December 1988. Studied for a degree in physical education, played for Salford, Witton Albion and Hyde United, where he was the player-coach at the start of the season. Alan Davies: Debut in 1982 and played in the 1983 FA Cup final, after only four games, in place of Steve Coppell making two goals in 4-0 replay win. Injury delayed start of next season and played only three more matches. Joined Newcastle, failed to settle, and after loan spells at Charlton and Carlisle, signed for Bradford City and Swansea (twice). Played 13 times for Wales. Found dead in a fume-filled car in February 1992, aged 30.
