Keane signs up for £50,000 a week - not official yet

Roy Keane is staying at Manchester United on a record salary of £50,000 a
week.
Keane is now the highest-paid British player in the Premiership after his
representative, London solicitor Michael Kennedy, reached agreement with
United
chairman Martin Edwards yesterday.
The contract is over four years and worth £10 million. Steve McManaman is the
best-paid British footballer, reputed to be on £60,000 a week at Real
Madrid, while
Juventus's Alessandro Del Piero is believed to be the world's highest-paid
player on £90,000 a week.
Keane could have walked out on United at the end of the season on a free
transfer under the Bosman ruling and earned millions in wages at a new club, as
McManaman did when leaving Liverpool for Spain.
Manchester United manager Sir Alex Ferguson will undoubtedly use the
signing of his captain as a boost for tomorrow night's European Champions League tie
against Valencia at Old Trafford.

Valencia believing his Old Trafford future is virtually signed and sealed.
Keane will have another round of talks with club director-lawyer Maurice
Watkins on Thursday, when it is expected that his continued presence at

The club do not expect to make any further announcements until after the
Champions League clash with Valencia, with boss Sir Alex Ferguson stressing
he doesn't want any outside distractions that could effect United's defence
of the European Cup.
Ferguson said: "There is another meeting with Roy scheduled for Thursday.
Things do take time and we will know more then. But at least we are still
talking."
It is believed that United are on the verge of smashing their pay structure
to meet Keane's £50,000 a week wage demands.
Talks with the player, Watkins and Keane's agent Michael Kennedy, have been
going on all week with a conclusion now likely in the 24 hours after the
clash with Valencia.
But Keane can expect a rapturous reception from the Old Trafford faithful
now, because the fans have been convinced by the Irishman's own words that
he is hell bent on staying with the club.
Keane said: "I have made a decision this week and, if everything goes
right, there can be an announcement soon."

2.5m-a-year Keane puts team-mates in shadows
He's probably the least flamboyant of all Manchester
United's stars and yet Roy Keane now earns more money than
all of them.
There are no Ferraris, celebrity girlfriends or regular
nights out at London's best restaurants, although he could
certainly afford all of them and more on his £50,000 a week
new deal that was agreed yesterday with the United board.
And there are definitely no sarongs.
Where David Beckham or Ryan Giggs are likely to be found on
the lifestyle pages, Keane is at his happiest when
surrounded by his family and friends from Cork, his three
children and his wife Theresa.
The Templeacre Tavern in Cork, where framed pictures of
Manchester United's captain hang on the wall, is a shining
example of Keane being true to his roots.
It is there Keane visits for a drink and a chat when he
gets time off. Regulars and staff from the pub make an
annual trip to England to watch their friend and hero, with
Keane supplying the best tickets and hospitality at the
regularly sold-out Old Trafford.
The atmosphere his friends create, in Ireland or on trips
to Manchester, is one Keane feels secure with - it is what
he grew up with.
And he readily gives something back, donating thousands of
pounds to the junior team he spent his formative years
with, Rockmount.
Even on the day United paid £3.75 million to take him from
Nottingham Forest, he was sitting in the Templeacre Tavern
enjoying a pint with his brothers like any other customer.
He drives a £60,000 Range Rover and lives, like the rest of
the United players, in the leafy Cheshire suburbs of south
Manchester. Earlier this year he turned down a lucrative
six-figure sum from Hello magazine to do an 'at home with
the Keane's' after he bought a £1m five-bedroom house in
Bowdon.
His commitment to his family and a settled lifestyle gave
the clearest indication that he was unlikely to leave
United for the lure of the lire in Italy or the Spanish
peseta.
Living abroad just wouldn't suit him. Indeed, in a recent
television appearance on Ireland's leading chat show, The
Late Late Show, he was asked whether he would be learning
Spanish or Italian, but the answer was a firm no.
To suggest, though, that the 28 year old is a quiet-living
family man is wide of the mark. Controversy of the wrong
sort has followed the hot-tempered Irishman off the field
as well as on.
He is renowned for his fierce, sometimes over zealous, will
to win, a competitive streak that has no peer, according to
Sir Alex Ferguson, who regards his Keane as the best
midfield player in Europe.
That temper has sometimes spilled over. He has been sent
off numerous times for violent acts including stamping, and
seems to have attracted alleged trouble, at the very least,
away from the pitch.
After United won the Premier-ship title, the first part of
last season's historic treble, he was accused of assault by
two women who had joined the players for a celebration in
Manchester.
Keane spent the night in the police cells and Ferguson had
to endure the embarrassment of going to the police station
to retrieve his captain. But all allegations were proved
unfounded - the only thing he was guilty of was a good
night out.
The new deal at United almost certainly confirms Keane's
place as the highest-paid British player in the
Premiership. While foreign stars such as Chelsea's Marcel
Desailly probably equal the £2.5ma-year deal, the promise
of a £1m-plus testimonial on top of the basic salary takes
Keane beyond anyone else.
He still lags behind Real Madrid's Steve McManaman, who is
on a reputed £60,000 a week as Britain's highest-paid star,
and Juventus' Alessandro Del Piero, whose new deal was said
to pay him £90,000 a week.
Still it's not bad for a boy from Cork in southern Ireland,
who was spotted as a teenager by Brian Clough.

The Mail via Soccernet announced at 3.20 pm that Keane had definitely signed
a new gig but no-one else has run the story as of now (4.30 pm) The Mail
claims agreement was reached last night and follows up with a big Roy
feature. Jumping the gun or a world scoop? United have announced nothing.
F365 and PA announced an hour later that: "Keane will have another round of

Ole Gunnar Solskjaer, who scored four goals in the premier
league win over Everton on Saturday, his first European
start of the season.
Solskjaer could replace Dwight Yorke who has not scored for
eight matches and Ferguson is keen to have an in-form
striker in the fray as United bid to make amends for the
2-0 defeat in their opening group game in Fiorentina.
Since that game United have beaten Brazilian club Palmeiras
in the world club championship and winger Ryan Giggs
believes that triumph will help the Reds return to their
best form.
``That match should set us up for the game with Valencia,''
he said. ``We are winning games but we've got to step it up
a bit now.''
After beating Sevilla 2-0 on Saturday, injury-hit Valencia
limped into Manchester this week with team selection
problems.
Miguel Angel Angulo, Argentine Kily Gonzalez, Frenchman
Alain Roche and Spanish international 'keeper Santiago
Canizares are all injured and Rumanian striker Adrian Ilie
is unwell. Midfielders Gerard Lopez and David Albelda are
suspended.
However confidence is high as Valencia's fine European
performances have earned them an unbeaten record in the
Champions League this season. In their first match of the
phase they beat Girondins 3-0.
``We know United are a good team, but that won't change our
attitude. We'll be going out to win,'' said midfielder
Francisco Farinos.

ANOTHER OP FOR JESPER

United's Swedish winger Jesper Blomqvist is to have another operation on his
mystery knee injury.
Jesper, who hasn't played for the Reds since the pre-season tour in
Australia, flew out home to Sweden to have an exploratory operation on the
knee, and admitted he doesn't know what the injury is.
He also had a word of complaint about his United teammates' reactions to his
lengthy spell on the sidelines.
"I need to have an arthroscopy on the knee to investigate what the problem
is," explained Blomqvist. "I don't know what actually caused the injury.
"The reactions from within the environment haven't made it easier. Of
course, I am getting questioned by others in the team and there have been
some verbal jabs lately," he continued. Obviously the wags in the Old
Trafford changing room have got to the international star.
Jesper did get back into training earlier in the year, but soon discovered
all was not well. "The running practice went well at first but, when I tried
to increase the speed and intensity, it suddenly hurt. Everything just got
worse," he said.
"I have got great support from manager Sir Alex Ferguson on this decision.
But I can't tell when I will be back. It's pointless to speculate. United
aren't pressuring me to be back before I am completely fit. I know they want
me back when the time is right."
Alongside Wes Brown and Ronny Johnsen, Jesper is one of three long-term
injuries at the club. We're doing OK without them, but the sooner the Reds
have an injury-free squad the better.

RYAN ENJOYING THE HIGH LIFE

Manchester United players thought they had conquered the lot last May, when
they flew home from Barcelona with the European Cup in their clutches.
But last Tuesday, they upgraded themselves to an even higher plane, after
beating Palmeiras of Brazil. The title of World Club Champions now rests
comfortably on the shoulders of players like Ryan Giggs.
"It was a trophy we definitely wanted to win," said Giggs, in conversation
with Manchester United Radio. "And although Palmeiras created some good
chances, I think we were really pleased with our performance, and we felt we
deserved our victory."
To win the Inter Continental Cup, the Reds not only had to overcome tough
opponents in Palmeiras, they also had to come to terms with a change of
climate and time zone.
"It took us a few days to adapt really," admits Ryan. "I think the lads were
waking up in the middle of the night for the first couple of nights, but
then we got the sleeping patterns right. For the game we felt quite good,
and overall, it was a very enjoyable experience."
The Reds also felt rather good upon their return from Tokyo, when they
dispelled any fears of jetlag by trouncing Everton 5-1. Only towards the
final fifteen minutes, with that scoreline already on the board, did
Saturday's match really lose its upbeat tempo.
"We didn't know how we were going to respond, following the trip home from
Tokyo, because that was unchartered territory," reflects Ryan, who completed
one hour of the Everton fixture.
"There was a bit of tiredness towards the end, you expect that after all the
travelling we've been doing. But I think generally the lads felt quite sharp
during the game."
Everton can certainly vouch for that, Ryan..... ouch!
