Barry Daily Comment:
United are set to take their place in the first ever World
Championships for club sides - should they lift the Champions
Cup in Barcelona in May.
FIFA have announced plans to introduce the tournament as early
as January next year, probably in Brazil.
The winners of this season's European Cup would be Europe's
representative but, if they declined the invitation, the place
would go to the runners-up.
If that invitation was declined too, then FIFA would be forced to
think again about the whole project.

Subject: Dennis Viollet by Pete Ashcroft Just in at http://www.red11.org/mufc/dviollet99.htm Pete has given me permission to send this out to you all: >>>>>>>>>>> Barry, Now that my tears have subsided I can tell you of my memory of Dennis. My father would have had much more to say if he were alive. He was born in the same year as Dennis. As a child, born and raised in South Manchester, football was the only thing we ever talked about or did in our house. My dad was a great left fullback and tried out for Bolton Wandererers in the early 50's. He turned down the job because the money was so bad. He was a qualified Engineering Draughtsman and as he found out I was on the way he took the higher paying job. Dennis Violett played some games late in his career for Abbey Hey Working Mens Club which is now in the Manchester Ameteur league. My Dad was the assistant Manager, Treasurer, linesman, coach, (with bucket and "magic sponge") for as long as I can remember. As I watched the home games from Mellands playing fields I stood in awe as Dennis demonstrated his mastery of the game. The game stood 1-1 in a semi-final cup game. With about a minute to go Abbey Hey won a corner kick. Cool as ice Dennis lines up to take the kick, the goalie is at the near post. Dennis hammers the corner across and I think the ball is going to go way over the attacking players but no, there is so much spin on the ball it curls into the net in the very top corner at the far post. Next thing the whistle went for full time and we were in the final! I have never seen so much beer go down! Bottles in the communal bath and then way into the evening at the WMC (Free meat pies all around also). Goodbye Dennis, give my regards to the "Babes" Pete Ashcroft

Subject: BSKYB TO KNOW UNITED TAKEOVER DECISION BY APRIL 13 UNITED CAMPAIGNERS BRACED FOR TAKEOVER DECISION Campaigners trying to stave off BSkyB's takeover bid for Manchester United are ready to battle on after news that a decision is imminent. BSkyB should know by April 13 if they can take over Manchester United. That is the latest date by which the Department of Trade and Industry must publish the Monopolies and Mergers Commission investigation into the takeover. BSkyB have claimed all along that the takeover would be good for United and football in general. They remain hopeful the verdict will go their way, but they did not wish to comment for now. But those opposed to the takeover have plenty to say. They are confident that the deal will be turned down, but they are also prepared to continue the fight if it does not. Michael Crick, of Shareholders United Against Murdoch, said: "We're increasingly confident that it will be rejected. "The mood has changed in the last few weeks and the football authorities, the broadcasting authorities and the treasury seem to be against it. We think if it were left to the individual members of the Government and the individual Labour MPs, they would overwhelmingly vote against it. "The fascinating thing is that Sky have not come up with any strong arguments for it. If it is accepted then we are prepared for that eventuality and we will once again campaign for shareholders to reject the new bid." On Friday the MMC will submit their conclusions to the DTI, which then has 20 working days to publish the report. If the MMC clears the takeover then Stephen Byers, the Secretary of State for Trade and Industry, has no power to block it. If the MMC opposes the deal then Byers can block it, clear it or pass it with certain conditions attached. But whatever the MMC recommends, their findings will not be made public until April 13 at the latest. A DTI spokesman explained: "We have a 20-day working period for publishing the report, which means a target date of April 13." ---------------------------------------------------- BSKYB TO KNOW UNITED TAKEOVER DECISION BY APRIL 13 BSkyB should know by April 13 if they can take over Manchester United. United director and solicitor Maurice Watkins was optimistic the deal would be given the thumbs up. "Manchester United and BSkyB have been dealing with the matter and obviously we both hope it is cleared," he said. If the takeover is given the green light, then the broadcasting company must start the whole process again and submit a new bid. If and when it is cleared then the whole process starts again," said Watkins. "BSkyB have to submit another bid because the previous bid lapsed once it was referred to the MMC."

Subject: Dwight and the clean sheets From the subject you may think this is the title of a new film. You'd be half right. It is about a potential new king but not about a film. Dwight Yorke season record: Scored in 19 of 34 games he has started ;-))) PL: 23 games 16 goals Euro: 7 games 7 goals FA: 4 games (1sub) 3 goals Total 34 games 1sub) 26 goals Compared to Gary Birtles first 34 games. He was a 1.25 million pound transfer in 1980 - in fact he was the first United million pound player. He scored in 3 games :-(( Div. 1 31 games 2 goals FA: 3 games 1 goal Gary somehow rediscovered his scoring touch when we sold him back to Forest for a couple of buckets of eels and a gallon of salad cream. The point is that some players can take the pressure of expectation and some cannot. Dwight may not go on scoring like this forever but he has started his United career with a promise that Eric showed. When Eric arrived we knew we had something special and his effect was immediate. But who would have dared to dream we'd win 4 of the next 5 titles? Earlier today I let my mind wander a little. Dare we dream of it? Four of the next five Europ....... nah. Get back to reality yet boyo - we've won nothing yet. But isn't it lovely to dream and maybe ... just maybe Yorkie will take us to the first European Cup win for many of us. And the first for a thousand years (it must seem) for the rest. Clean sheets. I love 'em. Today was our 7th clean sheet in 10 games. We have conceeded just three goals in those 10 games. Since Christmas we have played 16 games and let in 8 with 9 clean sheets. In that time, only Leicester have scored more than one against us and we were 5-1 up (at that point) so we got sloppy. The game is on again (the 8pm replay after Fox Sports news) - gotta go ;-)))))))) Dave Manchester United - The Legend - http://manunited.net

Subject: Ferguson hails Yorke - 'Player of the Year' Caribbean King, Dwight Yorke Alex Ferguson hailed Dwight Yorke as the Player of the Year after two goals from the Tobagan set up a heavyweight FA Cup semi-final clash with Arsenal on his old stamping ground. And Chelsea boss Gianluca Vialli also paid tribute to Manchester United's Caribbean King after Yorke's double ended his Wembley ambitions in last night's quarter-final replay at Stamford Bridge. Yorke fired home a goal in each half to book the Premiership leaders a date with holders Arsenal at Villa Park on April 11. United's 2-0 win at Chelsea keeps Ferguson's sights trained on an incredible treble and he doesn't underestimate the role played by the marksman he prised from Aston Villa for £12 million. Ferguson said: "Dwight Yorke has been unquestionably the outstanding footballer this season for me. Irrespective of who he plays for, you just can't ignore that kind of football.'' Gianluca Vialli was forced to agree after watching Yorke demolish his FA Cup dreams with an exquisite chip in the 58th minute. The spectacular goal knocked the spirit out of the Londoners who had battled back from a nightmare start when they gifted Yorke, pictured, his first of the night in the fourth minute. Vialli said: "Yorke is one of the most exciting players in European football, but the season is not finished yet and I hope one of my players can still be one of the most important players of the season.'' Yorke's brace brought his total for the season to 26 goals and his delightful second was United's 100th goal in all competitions this season. Little wonder Ferguson has been impressed by the way the kid from the Caribbean has adapted to life at Old Trafford. Ferguson said: "I don't know what more you can say about the lad. He's answered every question you can put to a footballer and he's done it with a terrific smile and temperament. "I wanted him two years ago. He's a Manchester United type player because he's got a good temperament, the courage to play and the ability to go with it. "Some players have been daunted by it in the past but he's just blossomed.'' Yorke, whose double last week gave United a two-goal lead over Inter Milan in the quarter-finals of the Champions' League, is making new friends everywhere - a task in itself for Manchester United players. As his team-mates were jeered back into the Stamford Bridge dressing room after their pre-match warm-up last night, Yorke flashed a smile at the home fans, signed autographs for them and exchanged a few pleasantries before going on to destroy their dreams.

Subject: Football - Yorke's double delights United Chelsea 0 Manchester United 2 By Glenn Moore The clinical finishing of Dwight Yorke proved the difference at Stamford Bridge last night as Manchester United finally beat Chelsea at the fourth time of asking this season. The Tobagan's 25th and 26th goals of the season, combined with a masterly goalkeeping display from the rejuvenated Peter Schmeichel, won this FA Cup sixth-round replay despite Chelsea controlling possession for much of the game. United will now meet the other member of this season's dominant triumvirate, Arsenal, in the semi-final, United's 22nd, at Villa Park on Sunday, 11 April. Yorke's opening goal, after three minutes, stunned Chelsea; his second, after 58, killed off their hopes just as it appeared they might earn an equaliser. It is the fourth time in six seasons United have beaten Chelsea in the FA Cup. The magnitude of the game was evident from the thicket of ticket touts outside Fulham Broadway station. Those supporters who were still negotiating when the match kicked off were robbed twice, for they also missed the opening goal. Having failed to break down a 10-man Chelsea on Sunday, United's swift penetration of the 11-man version last night was due, perhaps, to the inclusion of Yorke and Andy Cole from the start. Their mere presence, along with that of Ryan Giggs, may have unsettled Chelsea whose nervousness, exacerbated by United's positive start, manifested itself in a flurry of early fouls, one of which was to prove expensive. It led to a David Beckham free-kick, 20 yards inside Chelsea's half on their right flank, which Franck Leboeuf met but only headed upwards. When the ball came down Cole was underneath and he steered it to Yorke, who volleyed the ball in with contemptuous ease. Chelsea's hesitancy grew with Roberto Di Matteo caught in possession and Celestine Babayaro failing to control a simple pass. But United, too, were feeling the pressure of the occasion and Paul Scholes mis-hit a clearance over his own goal-line. The tension was vividly illustrated as, from the corner, Gianfranco Zola and Jody Morris got in each other's way as they each attempted to shoot. Chelsea gradually recovered their poise, however, and pushed United back, Morris twice bringing saves from Schmeichel. Then the Dane had to be alert to deny Zola after Di Matteo put him through. These chances, around the quarter-hour, were Chelsea's best for a while as both sides recovered their shape and midfield became the battleground. With the pace remaining frantic, the play became messy but Chelsea's movement still caused occasional problems. Morris shot over following one flowing move on the half-hour and Gary Neville just cleared Dennis Wise's cross after another. With Schmeichel quick to deny Tore Andre Flo, released down the centre by Zola, United reached half-time with their lead intact. Chelsea returned with fresh vigour, winning a flurry of corners, from one of which Bernard Lambourde headed just wide. United responded with a wave of attacks in which Giggs was prominent but failed to manage a direct shot on goal. Ten minutes into the half the growing frustration of the home crowd reached a new peak as a sweeping move, in which Zola and Morris excelled, ended with Wise's far-post shot from Babayaro's teasing cross being blocked by Flo almost on the line. The Norwegian, without a goal since Boxing Day, was now foiling his team-mates' attempts. The Blues' chagrin deepened as, three minutes later, United scored again. There seemed to be little danger with Chelsea having possession in defence, but Yorke and Cole hassled and, suddenly, Yorke was free on goal. From 25 yards out he produced an impudent chip which floated over Ed De Goey and nestled in the net. The ground briefly fell silent, Chelsea supporters quiet with horror, United's hushed in awe. It was harsh on Chelsea, who had dominated possession for the previous 40 minutes, but it vividly illustrated the difference between the teams: their finishing. As if to underline this, Morris and Lambourde both missed good chances, with foot and head, in the next few minutes. While Morris hesitated, Lambourde rushed himself. The chances served to remind United that Chelsea still carried a threat and as they looked to break up their rhythm Yorke was booked for kicking the ball away. Gianluca Vialli brought on Bjarne Goldbaek and Mikkel Forssell in attempt to drag his team back into the game but the pattern remained the same, with Forssell beating the offside trap but not Schmeichel. Even as Chelsea strained for a goal Alex Ferguson was thinking of further challenges, the manager withdrawing Cole and Yorke. A European and domestic treble remains in their reach; Chelsea have just two trophies to chase. It could be a lot worse, but that will be little consolation this morning. Chelsea (4-4-2): De Goey; Lambourde, Desailly, Leboeuf (Myers, h-t), Le Saux; Wise, Morris,(Goldbaek, 70) Di Matteo, Babayaro; Zola, Flo (Forssell, 70). Substitutes not used: Newton, Hitchcock (gk). Manchester United (3-3-1-3): Schmeichel; G Neville, Berg, Sta; Irwin Beckham, Keane; Scholes; Giggs (Blomqvist, 74), Cole (P Neville, 70), Yorke (Solskjaer, 84). Subject: Chelsea thoughts (reps/pics) Allo all, As usual, pictures (10 of them) and reports are up at the address http://members.xoom.com/heathens/mufc.html Enjoy them! Better late than never. Fergi always said United like to make things difficult for themselves. Actually, Fergi likes to make things difficult for himself as well. No one will know how United were to perform had Yorke, Giggs and Cole not been rested on Sunday. However, last night's match showed that Fergi needed them, United needed them as well. What a difference the four guys made (Stam, Yorke, Cole and Giggs). Chelsea though was back to full strength and having boasted to have one of the best home record around, could not match United in every department. Di Matteo could not match Keane's work rate, Zola, Flo, Matteo and Wise could not find a way through Schmeichel. Up front, Leboeuf and Desailly found Yorke and Cole a real handful. Le Saux could not contain Beckham and Garys' runs down the wing. Giggs and later Blomqvist found life quite easy on the left as well. In short, United were far too superior yesterday. The million dollars organization must have learnt some valuable lessons from United. To be fair, Chelsea did not have the luck as well. Who would know what will happen if Wise's touch (which was heading towards the empty goal after United took the lead) was not deflected away by Flo? Chelsea like United on Sunday, had several good chances to score but could not materialize. United, on the other hand, scored two from about four chances. Class. On contrast to Sunday's game, where our good friend Durkin handed out numerous yellow and red cards. He refrained from repeating his act. Maybe the players were more careful this time round. Still boos could still be heard from both parties. Still, Yorke was penalised for kicking the ball away. Yorke returned him the favor by pushing him later, cheeky! Personally, the best moment was the celebration after Yorke's first goal. Yorke showing his generosity, started a Bebeto celebration (the cradle act). Other players, including Beckham joined in too. I assume that the goal was dedicated to Brooklyn, and I thought that was a nice gesture, especially when Beckham did not score (he did provide the cross for Cole to head on though). Fergi has been critised by many for not taking the FA Cup seriously. Personally, it would be nuts to say that. He showed his seriousness by sending out his first team knowing that Inter spies could be all over. After last night's game, I'm sure that no one will open their mouths without ever thinking again.

Subject: Fergie watches winger! «« Alex Ferguson hopped over to Maine Road on Saturday to watch one of the brightest wing prospects in the Nationwide League. But the impressed Reds boss will not be preparing a bid because United already have Manchester City's best attacking player signed up. Fergie was witness to another virtuoso display from Terry Cooke against Northampton, leaving him with another tough decision to make in the coming weeks. Close pal Joe Royle is desperately scratching around for the cash to make Cooke his next permanent signing for £400,000 plus add-ons for future appearances. But with each performance the 23-year-old winger is tempting the United boss to give him another chance as he seeks assurances over first team opportunities next season. Meanwhile, other clubs have been alerted to the situation and appear ready to step in with a bid before the end of the season. It is looking more likely that Cooke will see out the season with City and go to tribunal over a move in the summer when he is out of contract but unable to move for free because he is under-24. Round-up «« United are reportedly monitoring the progress of Bolton Wanderers' Academy keeper James Evans. The 17-year-old, rated at £350,000, is also being watched by Blackburn. The rearranged Premiership match against Liverpool at Anfield has been pencilled in to be shown on Sky TV on Wednesday May 5.

Subject: Chelsea, Yorkie, Schmikes We would have not won that match last night if it wasn't for Schmikes, everytime i see him play, i wonder if we'll be the same team without him. The man is just amazing. How he didn't feature in the MoM voting at the end was beyond belief! I hope he stays for another year as there is no-one like him in the world. We have kept a lot of clean sheets of late and it is down to Schmikes more than the defence in my opinion. He saves nearly every one-on-one situation. Again last night, we presented 3 or 4 clear chances for Chelsea, we can't keep giving away chances as it will backfire eventually when Schmikes isn't so good on the night. Keane is the most dangerous player i have seen. I'm talking about his celebrating of goals, last night he could have done Yorkie's back in but Yorkie's back is probably quite used to all the strains due to his 'extra' training. Keane has kicked people in the back when they have scored (Becks goal past Soton in August/September last year), slapped people, dragged them to the ground. It's ironic when they say you would rather play with him rather than against him, as in Keane's case he is dangerous either way! Yorkie is great. He has the knack in scoring the all important first goal for us, much like, hate to say it, like Eric did. That's the ninth time he has scored the games first goal, a fact not lost on me as i've placed quite tasty bets on him to score first in the past few weeks - thanks Yorkie! He is normally about 5/1 for away games and about 7/2 for league home games for anyone wishing to place a bet on the lad. Berni
