Subject: FERGUSON WORTH EVERY PENNY The League Managers' Association have welcomed Manchester United's negotiations to make Alex Ferguson the highest paid manager in Britain. United have opened preliminary negotiations with Ferguson's advisers over a three-year deal worth a reported £5million. The contract would eclipse the £1million-a-year Ferguson currently earns at Old Trafford, including his bonuses, and make the 57-year-old the highest-paid boss in the country. LMA chief executive John Barnwell believes the Old Trafford chief is worth the increase after leading United to the most glorious chapter in their history. ''For the first time, managers are being paid commensurate to the responsibilities they have got,'' said Barnwell. ''Football is one of the very few businesses where the management get less than the workers. ''There are other people in plc companies who get huge pay-offs through shareholders, and it is only correct that the person who is the motivator of success should be paid accordingly. ''Alex has done such a fantastic job there that it is only right that he is paid accordingly.'' But Barnwell warned that the financial rewards Ferguson could enjoy are merely a ''one-off'' for a club who can afford to do it. ''Alex has achieved so much success for the club, which is supposedly the wealthiest off the pitch,'' said Barnwell. ''So now the manager, who has all the responsibilities for that success, should be paid commensurate to the club he is with. ''It is a one-off situation. It is not a yardstick for every other club to follow.'' United were going to wait until the summer to open discussions with Ferguson's advisers, but speculation linking him with the England boss' job following the sacking of Glenn Hoddle appears to have forced their hand. They aim to tie up the deal in the summer, and it is likely to be Ferguson's last with the club. Ferguson, who has been in charge at Old Trafford since 1986, is also organising a blockbusting United testimonial next season which could raise as much as £3million to be split between himself and charities of his choice.

Subject: UNITED OPEN FERGIE DEAL TALKS Manchester United aim to reward Alex Ferguson for his success at Old Trafford by making him the best-paid manager in Britain. The United paymasters have opened preliminary negotiations with Ferguson's advisers over a three-year deal worth a reported £5million. This deal would eclipse the £1million-a-year Ferguson currently earns at Old Trafford, including his bonuses, and make the 57-year-old the highest-paid boss in the country. United chairman Martin Edwards had said that contract talks would not begin until the summer, but the club has moved now with Ferguson being linked with the England manager's job. United aim to tie up the deal in the summer and it is likely to be Ferguson's last with the club. Ferguson, who has been in charge at Old Trafford since 1986, is also organising a blockbusting United testimonial next season which could raise as much as £3million to be split between himself and charities of his choice.

Subject: Jaap Stam Pin JAAP STAM Birthplace: Kampen, Holland 17/7/72 Height: 190cm - 6ft 3in Weight: 86kg - 13st 8lb Full International: Holland (21 caps, 2 goals) Position: Defender Squad Number: 6 listDebut: 09.08.1998 Appearances (1998-1999): 33 Goals: 1 Three years ago, Jaap Stam was turning out for Dutch side Cambuur Leeuwarden. A move to top division side Willem II was the turning point of his career, as several top-level performances led to the attention of the country's big clubs. In 1996, PSV Eindhoven came in for Stam, and his reputation has been growing ever since, and he won his first cap in the same year. His debut, against Brazil, ended in a 2-2 draw, and he has been a fixture in the national side ever since. Europe's top clubs began to take notice of Stam, and a full year after first noticing Stam, Manchester United paid a world record fee for a defender, £10.6 million, to bring the big central defender to Old Trafford. This record move came just three months after being named Dutch footballer of the Year. Quite a year for Stam. The year got even better during the summer, as he reached the semi-finals of the World Cup with Holland, falling to Brazil. Strong in the air and good on the ball, Stam can rightly claim to be one of the best defenders in the world. http://www.red11.org/mufc/stam.htm
