Subject: FERGIE SAYS NO BECKHAM BUST-UP
Sir Alex Ferguson has denied claims David Beckham has been
recalled from his honeymoon after Manchester United were
threatened with legal action.
Australian promoters Rivkin Entertainment have threatened to
withdraw part of United's appearance fee if the England
midfielder does not play. But United are currently negotiating
with the promoters to resolve the situation.
"That matter is being resolved as we speak," a United spokesman
said. "I don't think there is an issue between us and the
Australians which will not be resolved amicably and sensibly."
United boss Ferguson says there is no truth in reports that
Beckham has been brought back early so he can take part in the
pre-season tour to Australia.
"There has been no bust-up. David was always due back on July 12
and will report for training on Monday," Ferguson said.
Weeks ago United announced that Beckham would miss the pre-season
trip but this caused a stir down under with the organisers
threatening to withdraw part of United's appearance fee if
Beckham failed to show.
There seemed little chance of Beckham joining the travelling
party as he will spend the next fortnight catching up on his
pre-season training programme.
Sir Alex himself will miss the Australian trip, which coincides
with his investiture at Buckingham Palace, but there is an
outside chance of him flying to Hong Kong for the closing game
against South China on July 24. But the promoters of the
Australian tour claim they have a contract which stipulates
Beckham is part of the squad.
Rivkin Entertainment believes the threat to withdraw half the
agreed fee will flush out Beckham and Ferguson.
"I'm 80-90 per cent sure both will be here," said spokesman
Bertie Mariani. "We've received verbal assurances and are
seeking confirmation in the next confirmation in the next 24
hours."

Subject: Beckham to miss United's Australian tour
By Jeremy Butler
MANCHESTER, England, July 9 - England international David
Beckham will miss Manchester United's two-match tour of Australia despite threats
it would cost the club half their four million Australian dollars ($2.67 million) fee.
United manager Alex Ferguson confirmed on Friday that Beckham would not be in
the squad.
Ferguson, who will also miss the trip to accept his Knighthood from the Queen at
Buckingham Palace on July 21, said the club never intended to include Beckham on
the Australian tour, although he could fly out to meet up with the squad for the
China and Hong Kong leg of the trip.
Beckham has been allowed to return late to pre-season training following his
wedding to singer Victoria Adams of the Spice Girls.
"David was told at the end of the season that he had to be back on July 12,"
Ferguson said, playing down British newspaper speculation that he and the player
had fallen out over the issue.
"I think obviously some attempt had been made by one of his or his bride's agents
to get an extension to his time off but we couldn't do that because he needs to get
fit for the new season.
"I spoke to David last week and he understood. There is not a bust-up on my part.
We considered all the players and when they should come back. David played his
last game on June 5 and the 12th of July was the latest we could possibly have him
back.
"He's had 37 days off now which is almost six weeks and he needs to get fit. He
was never going to Australia at the start and there are no plans for him to go.
Whether he goes to the second leg in China and Hong Kong depends on his
fitness."
The news will leave the promoters of two matches between United and Australia's
national team fuming as they said they have a agreement stating Beckham would
play.
"We've tried to be nice but we've been forced to get tough," said Dominic Galati,
managing director of the promoters. "It's not the honeymoon anymore, it's a two
million Australian dollar penalty instead.
"They (United) are being paid more by us than they've ever received for an overseas
tour and we feel they should honour the contract."

Subject: Edwards rumours boost Man Utd shares
By Keith Weir
LONDON, July 9 - Shares in European soccer champions
Manchester United rose again on Friday as speculation grew that new investors
could buy a large chunk of the shares held by Chief Executive Martin Edwards.
The latest name linked with a stake was the Sultan of Brunei -- a move which would
give one of the world's richest men a sizeable holding in the world's richest soccer
club.
Britain's Daily Mail said the Sultan had offered Edwards 220p per share for 28.5
million shares - representing over 10 percent of the club and costing him more than
60 million pounds ($93 million).
However, industry sources played down the speculation, saying the rumour had
been circulating for some time and had come to nothing so far.
Other reports focused on a possible approach to Edwards, who owns around 14
percent of the club, from a wealthy Anglo-Irish group of racehorse owners including
Ireland's JP McManus.
Industry sources told Reuters on Thursday that Edwards had turned down one
approach, believed to be from the racing consortium, but that other potential
purchasers had emerged.
United shares gained 3-1/2p to 214-1/2p on speculation that any new investors
could use their stake as a base for a fresh takeover bid for the club.
United agreed a billion dollar takeover by Rupert Murdoch's BSkyB * pay
TV group last September but the takeover was blocked by the British government
three months ago.
United fans mounted a noisy campaign against the takeover, many voicing anger at
Edwards, who stood to make more than 80 million pounds from the deal.
Edwards is believed to be prepared to listen to offers for up to 10 percent of the club
but is throught to want to retain his position at the helm of the club.
The Edwards family has run the club since the early 1960s, Edwards taking over
control from his late father Louis in 1980.
United, who achieved an unprecedented treble of Premier league, F.A. and European
Cup titles last season, have a huge global following.
The club has established partnerships with retailers in Southeast Asia and the
Middle East as it seeks to cash in on the value of its brand.

Subject: 'Mafia' linked to United takeover
Manchester United chairman Martin Edwards is considering
offers to sell part of his share in the club, according to reports.
Reports claim that racing expert JP McManus has been
rebuffed in his initial attempt to purchase part of Edwards'
shareholding at Old Trafford.
But it has also been suggested that McManus and his associates
- the "Coolmore Mafia" - are set for further negotiations to buy
part of United. The other members of the group are Dermot
Desmond, John Magnier, Michael Tabor and Joe Lewis.
Magnier refused to comment on the talk that he was part of a
group intent on buying into the club, but Tabor said: "It's like
any business proposition - one would have to take a close look at
it."
United also declined to comment on the speculation, but sources
claim Edwards could be on the verge of accepting an offer to buy
part of his shareholding - while retaining his power base and
place on the board.

Subject: United approach Quinton Fortune?
MADRID, July 9 - Manchester United have made an approach to
Atletico Madrid B's South African midfielder Quinton Fortune,
the Spanish club revealed on Friday.
Fortune, who has been with the Atletico second team for the past
four years, had been on the brink of signing for first division
Valladolid.
The chance of a move to United, who would insist on a trial
period at old Trafford before a full transfer, could see that
scuppered, however.
Atletico managing director Miguel Angel Gil said: "Fortune has
an offer from Manchester United and that could mean his proposed
transfer to Valldolid doesn't go through.
"Valladolid did have an agreement with us but the final decision
will be with the player."
