Subject: Reseves/FA YOUTH CUP From the MEN: Villa Reserves 1 Man United Reserves 5 United came from behind to thrash a young Villa side on an eventful evening for midfielder Jonathan Greening. England youth Greening was dismissed in the 62nd minute for a second bookable offence, departing at the same time as Villa's Darren Byfield who retaliated to the United youngster's challenge. Byfield had set up the game's opening goal, scored by Darius Vassell, as David May was left flat-footed. Jordi Cruyff headed the visitors back onto level terms after Greening's 27th minute drive had been blocked on the line, then nine minutes later Greening shot United in front. The visitors took complete control after the double sending off and they made sure of victory in the 77th minute, when Ole Gunnar Solskjaer raced on to Phil Neville's through ball to strike home a fine cross shot. Solskjaer then provided the cross for Phil Mulryne to score from 10 yards in the 88th minutes, before the Norwegian brilliantly drove in an 18 yard effort for his second goal. United: Culkin, Clegg, Neville, May, Curtiks, Teather (Wilson 56), Cruyff, Mulryne (Bakircioglu, Notman 77), Solskjaer, Greening. Subs not used: Healy, Gibson, Nevland. (Kennedy Bakircioglou is a young Swedish striker who has flown over to play for the reserves on trial) ------------------------------ FA YOUTH CUP Everton 4 Man United 0 Manchester United's hopes of adding to their proud FA Youth Cup record was snuffed out in a third round replay at Goodison Park last night. The Reds, winners of the trophy on eight occasions, rarely looked likely to prolong their involvement in this season's competition. Once Everton had opened the scoring in the 14th minute, through Joseph McAlpine, the tie became an uphill battle. And two Everton goals inside the opening eight minutes of the second half through Francis Jeffers and Leon Osman, sealed United's fate. Jeffers scored Everton's fourth goal in the 70th minute. United's Michael Stewart went close with a long range shot close to the end, but by then it didn't really matter. United: Rachubka, Lynch (Rose), Hilton, Roche, O'Shea, Clegg, Evans (Studley), Stewart, Wheatcroft, Fitzpatrick (Weller), Chadwick. Subs not used: Marsh, Cosgrove.

Subject: PREMIER PREVIEW Manchester United v West Ham BLOMQVIST HAPPY WITH SQUAD ROTATION Jesper Blomqvist is a big fan of Alex Ferguson's policy of squad rotation - even though he has sometimes been left on the sidelines himself. The Swedish international winger must feel like he has been doing the hokey-cokey at Old Trafford because he has been in and out of the Manchester United side so often this season. But Blomqvist does not mind because he understands why Ferguson is so anxious to keep switching his players around. Blomqvist realises that it is the best way of keeping the United players fresh to cope with the demands of chasing glory in the Premiership, Champions League and FA Cup. He feels other ambitious clubs will have to follow the lead of United and Chelsea if they are to lift any silverware at home and abroad. ''I think this is the way it's going for all the big clubs. You need 18 or 20 players of top quality to cope with all the games you have, otherwise you could end up losing everything,'' said Blomqvist. ''If you don't have enough players they can end up playing too many games and the season can become too long for them. You can't have just 14 players if you are going to try to compete at the top level. It is difficult for the players to adjust to big squads, but we just have to get used to it and I think we are.'' Blomqvist is expected to continue on the left flank against West Ham at Old Trafford today, with Ryan Giggs on the right and David Beckham named among the substitutes. Raimond van der Gouw steps in for goalkeeper Peter Schmeichel, who has been given time off to work on a sun tan in Barbados, while Paul Scholes has also been told to take a break. Ferguson has said he will stick largely with the side which beat Middlesbrough in the FA Cup last Sunday, which means Henning Berg could keep his place in the heart of the defence alongside Jaap Stam. Berg has been one of the biggest losers in the cut-throat competition for places at United and he was delighted to play against Boro. ''It was a tough game to come back and play in but everything went well,'' he said. ''We will just have to wait and see whether or not I play against West Ham, but I'm hopeful of playing. I didn't play much at the start of the season but I've played a couple of games now and hopefully if I play well I will keep my place. But there are so many good players at this club that you never can tell.'' HISLOP RELISHING OLD TRAFFORD TEST Shaka Hislop will fulfil a life-long ambition when he steps out at Old Trafford today. The West Ham goalkeeper will be making his first appearance at the famous home of Manchester United - something he has dreamed of doing since he was a boy. The icing on the cake for Hislop is the fact he will be facing one of his best friends, United striker Dwight Yorke. Hislop and Yorke have been close friends since their days together on the beaches of Trinidad and were once teammates in the Trinidad national under-11 squad. The Hammers stopper has been one of the Premiership's form goalkeepers this season and is looking forward to pitting his wits against a strike force he rates as the best in the country. ''I go to Old Trafford to play there for the first time and know that I will be facing one of the most frightening strike forces in the country,'' said Hislop. ''I've sat on the bench there a few times but never actually taken part in the game. Everybody dreams of playing at Old Trafford and there is a lot of mystique about the place. It is the home of Manchester United, the world's biggest football club in one of the biggest towns in England. ''They will be expecting 55,000 in the stadium and I'm sure it will be a thrilling atmosphere. On top of that I'll be facing the likes of Dwight and Andy Cole. That is what it is all about, testing yourself against the best. You can't really say United have had a weak team but this is certainly one of the strongest sides they have had in years. In that respect it is the perfect time for me to realise my dream, particularly as I am playing some of the best football of my career to date. ''My confidence is high at the moment and I am enjoying it as much as I have ever enjoyed playing football - I am sure that is the key to my form. First and foremost I hope West Ham pick up three points from the match, but if I can stop Dwight getting on the scoresheet then you can be sure I'll be wearing the broader smile at the end of the game.'' Hislop said he knew Yorke was a special player when the pair were just youngsters. ''I have known Dwight since he was eight years old and he has always been an exceptional talent,'' said Hislop. ''He lived in Tobago and I lived in Trinidad but we later played for the under-11 national team. Brian Lara was also in that side and all three of us have remained close friends and see each other whenever we can.'' West Ham will give a late fitness test to Ian Wright, who is struggling with a knee injury. Paul Kitson is out with 'flu so Trevor Sinclair will partner John Hartson up front if Wright misses out. John Moncur also faces a test on a groin injury, while Marc Keller (hamstring) and Julian Dicks (knee) are ruled out. Teenage sensation Joe Cole will be on the bench, hoping to make his Premiership debut

Subject: FERGUSON HAS CONFIDENCE IN VAN DER GOUW Alex Ferguson has no doubts Raimond van der Gouw will prove to be a safe pair of hands when he stands in for Peter Schmeichel against West Ham at Old Trafford on Sunday. Van der Gouw will make his third league start of the season for Manchester United because Schmeichel has been given the week off to relax in the Caribbean sun in Barbados. The United boss is keen to rest Schmeichel, who is quitting Old Trafford at the end of the season because of the strain of playing in the Premiership. Ferguson has no hesitation in turning to Van der Gouw, who recently signed a new two-year contract at the club, and there are those who feel he deserves this latest chance following Schmeichel's erratic form. The Dutch goalkeeper has helped United to victory in the last five Premiership matches he has played in and he has conceded just one goal in those games. Ferguson said: ''Peter is having a break which was arranged some time ago and I've done the same thing with David Beckham, Gary Neville and Paul Scholes. ''Raimond is a terrific stand-in for Peter and he has never let us down. ''He has played in the semi-final of the European Cup, as well as the quarter-final, and he has been excellent.'' Ferguson claims he will stick largely with the side which beat Middlesbrough in the FA Cup last Sunday and he is anxious to rest some of his other players, who were on World Cup duty in the summer. Paul Scholes has been given the week off, while David Beckham and Gary Neville, who are available after one-match bans, are expected to be named on the bench along with Ronny Johnsen, who has recovered from the flu. Ferguson is determined to utilise his vast squad to the utmost to keep his key players as fresh as possible for their three-pronged assault on honours in the Premiership, Champions League and FA Cup. He realises it is hard keeping players like Henning Berg happy on the fringes, but he reiterated that every one of them will get their turn. ''This is the kind of pool we need,'' he said. ''It's good for competition and it's also for the long-term benefit of the club if we are to stay in the league, FA Cup and European Cup. ''There's still a lot of football to be played and they will all play their part. ''They all want to play and it's unfortunate that some of them have to be left out. ''But I hope they recognise the qualities of this club and the nature of football nowadays means they will all get their turn.''
