Subject: United face keeper crisis as Taibi misses deadline Wednesday September 8, 1999 Manchester United may be without both their first-choice goalkeepers for the start of their defence of the Champions League, after Uefa refused to register last week's signing Massimo Taibi for the opening phase of the competition. Taibi completed his £4.5m move from Venezia last Tuesday, the transfer deadline for the Champions League, but Uefa said the documents relating to the move were dated September 1, not August 31 as required. Taibi was bought to provide competition for Mark Bosnich, who has a hamstring injury and may not be fit for United's opening Champions League match against Croatia Zagreb next Tuesday at Old Trafford. Raimond van der Gouw has been deputising. "The player was registered with Manchester United and the FA on August 31," said United's spokesman Ken Ramsden. "We then approached the Italians for international clearance but for some reason it was not processed until September 1. It's an issue that needs to be resolved as soon as possible." United have appealed against the decision. Leeds United's Uefa Cup first-round away leg against Partizan Belgrade next Thursday will be played in Holland. Uefa will choose between Vitesse Arnhem and Heerenveen for the tie, which is being switched to a neutral venue because of the uneasy relations between Yugoslavia and Britain after the Balkan conflict. Wolves have completed the signing of Ade Akinbiyi from Bristol City for £3.5m, making him the most expensive player in the Nationwide League. The 24-year-old striker has signed a five-year contract. Fifa's president Sepp Blatter and the president of the Asia Football Confederation have resolved the dispute over Asia's allocation of places for the 2002 World Cup finals. Asia has accepted Uefa's offer of half a qualifying berth, giving a third team a chance to reach the finals via a play-off with a team from Europe.

Subject: UNITED PLEAD INNOCENT OVER TAIBI Manchester United insist they have done nothing wrong after UEFA refused to register Massimo Taibi for the Champions League. UEFA have rejected the Italian goalkeeper's registration because his transfer documents were dated September 1, which is one day after the Champions League deadline. United claim they have followed the proper procedure after they completed Taibi's £4.5million move from Venezia on August 31. They timed the conclusion of the deal at 4.15pm before forwarding his documents to Italy. It appears the Italians did not forward his paperwork to UEFA until the following day. The Treble winners have appealed against the ruling by UEFA's control and disciplinary body and were today preparing their case. Club director and solicitor Maurice Watkins claimed United have done everything by the book, but he refused to blame the Italians. "The deal was concluded on the 31st, but I don't want to level any criticism at anyone else," he said. United have asked for a swift appeal hearing because they want Taibi to play in their opening Champions League Group D game against Croatia Zagreb on Tuesday at Old Trafford. Watkins said: "The appeal date has been set so early because it has to be heard before Tuesday's match. "We're putting the grounds of our appeal in tonight ahead of the hearing on Friday." Regardless of the outcome, Taibi will make his United debut against Liverpool on Saturday. © PA Sporting Life

Subject: Ferguson wants Silvestre for Saturdays clash Manchester United hope to bring in Mickael Silvestre in time to make his debut against Liverpool on Saturday. United are ready to hire a private jet to pick up Internazionale's French defender if he agrees to join them. Silvestre is on under-21 duty in Armenia and will fly back with the senior squad after their game tonight, arriving in Paris at 2am. If the defender agrees to join United in a £3.25m deal then he will be whisked to Manchester to take a medical and train with his new team-mates. This will be welcome news for United's manager, Sir Alex Ferguson, who is desperate for reinforcements for the Liverpool game. He is without Roy Keane, Denis Irwin, Ronny Johnsen and Wes Brown. Silvestre could even appear at left-back, the position Liverpool wanted him for but the role he prefers not to play. Independent

Subject: The best team lost Personal Report by Pete From: Peter Hargreaves As I was in Leeds city centre for a meeting this afternoon I had the opportunity to go over to Bell-end Road tonight to see the Reserves play against the Sheep United reserves and I can report without fear of contradiction (Baa....) that the best team lost. I arrived quite early at the ground as I wanted to see the statue of Billy Bremner. I cannot pretend that I was anything other than a despiser of that Leeds United team of the 60's, but no one can doubt that Billy Bremner was a lionhearted footballer. He broke my bloody heart that night at the City Ground in 1965 and what made it worse is that I KNEW that Giles' free kick had hit the little sod on the head and gone in with Bremner knowing nothing about it! But that apart little Billy deserved to live much longer than he was allowed to and his death came as a big shock to me. The statue is well done and is a fitting tribute to the wee man. It is my hope that all Manchester United supporters will put aside their dislike of Leeds United when viewing the statue. So having paid my respects I wandered back to the other side and went to pay. "It's free old love" the gateman said - would he have been so familiar if he had known I was a visitor from 'over the big hill'? But never one to refuse a freebie in I went without further ado. Another reason I was glad that I had been early was that I had managed to obtain a teamsheet from the offices and when I got inside the ground there was much 'baaing' and 'gnashing of molars' as there were no programmes to be had. Just before the kick-off the announcer went through the teams and I was surprised to hear the name of O'Shea as he most definitely was not a starter. It looked like Wallwork at number four but I did not recognise the centre-half - perhaps Barry can tell us. They had also got the rest of the team out of order so the correct line up was: Culkin, Clegg, Hilton, Wallwork, Unknown, Wellens, Wilson, Fortune, Notman and Twiss. The match kicked off to strains of "Stand up if you hate ManU" which made me chuckle - there could not have been more than three Manchester United supporters in the ground (and we weren't going to let on) so who they were trying to impress I'm not too sure. We looked very lively and Wilson twice went close. The first time, in the tenth minute, was when he was put through by Notman and had a clear run on goal with only the goalie to beat. The goalie stood transfixed like a sheep in a Diggers wellies and Wilson only needed to keep a cool head to score. He did neither. Seven minutes later he tried the most audacious free kick from all of thirty-five yards which went not too far over the bar. On eighteen minutes Clegg demonstrated the level of control I have been telling you about - none - and they had their best chance thus far; fortunately missing. Then five minutes later he redeemed himself by popping up at the far post (for him) to block a certain goal bound effort. The game settled down and was fairly well balanced when we took the lead with a quite excellent goal in the fortieth minute. Wilson took the ball in our half in the inside right position and fired a brilliant ball towards Fortune. He controlled well and played Notman in with a delightful reverse ball. Notman went on a good run and just as the Leeds centre half was closing in to tackle, hit a beauty of a shot, hard and low into the bottom corner of the net. A cracker of a goal and well deserved by the little lad who once again ran his socks off for the whole match. So at half time we were leading 1-0 and deservedly so. I did not have a pie as I don't like lamb. Enough said! I can report, however, that cannibalism is alive and well at Bell-end Road. The second half began much as the first had ended with us looking by far the livelier side. Fortune was doing a lot of running but I have to say that had he looked up a couple of times he would have seen Notman very well placed, wide right and could have played him in. If I have a criticism of Fortune (and this is a little unfair for a new lad who did work so hard tonight) it was that he did fail to spot a number of passing opportunities which would have given very good goal scoring chances for his teammates. In the sixteenth minute Fortune picked up the ball just in their half, inside left, and had an excellent run, only to hit his shot hopelessly wide. A very disappointing finish. Then in the space of three minutes we should have scored twice and wrapped the game up. Both times Twiss was the provider making great runs down the left flank and firing in excellent low crosses, firstly to the near post and then into the back of the box. Ford wasted both chances and, sadly, that proved our undoing. Perked up by their let-offs Leeds United pressed forward and the crowd really did start to get behind them. They equalised in the twenty-third minute and I have to say that from that moment on I feared the worst. On the half hour an hit-and-hope type cross appeared to hit the head of one of our defenders and shot into the top left corner for the winner. I was gutted and the sheepsha---rs were beside themselves with glee; the 'Baa' level registering a million on the decimeter. We pressed forward gamely and made another couple of half chances, were nearly caught with a break once and SHOULD have equalised when Notman had a brilliant (really beautiful on-the-run-Beckham-type) cross headed over the bar when it was easier to score (you should have seen Notman's reaction - he was absolutely furious - and rightly so!) In the end we ran out undeserved losers. A draw would have been a fitting result but it wasn't to be. Leeds United did look the more powerful of the two sides; we looked far and away more skillful. I thought Notman played well, with lots of unselfish running. Fortune looked a cut above the rest with clever movement and first touch. However he needs to realise that there are other equally skillful lads around him (now?) and that he must improve his all round 'awareness'. Wellens battled as he always does; I like this lad, but fear he will not make it. Ford looked what he is - lightweight. Culkin's kicking made Bosnich's look good and he really MUST do something about it. At least Bosnich had the excuse that the ball kept coming to his 'wrong foot' - Culkin does not impress me in the slightest. As he ran out for the warm up a young lamb said "Look it's Schmeichel" - that is the only way that Culkin will EVER come close to the great man - at fifty yards he does resemble him! Subject: From Henning Berg homepage - Scoring in the wrong goal. The past week has been packed with matches, so unfortunately I didn't have time to update my page after the Super Cup match against Lazio last friday. Most of you know that we lost the match 0-1. Even though we didn't put all our energy into the game against the Italians, it was not a pleasant feeling to loose. We played a fairly good 1. half, but then we noticed that we still had the two though last matches against Arsenal and Coventry "in our legs". Lazio has many talented players and deserved to win. But against Newcastle we where 100% fit, and gave it our best. We where, without doubt, clearly the best team. Even though we missed Roy and Dennis (international game with Ireland). Already by 15 minutes where we up by 1-0, after a good offensive play and scoring by Andy. Somehow, beyond my knowledge, we calmed down after the goal, and let Newcastle more and more into the game. But they didn't manage to get a goal. But, I did! The only thing is, it was in the wrong goal. I was a bit unfortunate when I tried to stop a pass, and the ball went behind Raimond. I had to try to stop the pass, because Newcastles forward was on my heels. If I hadn't scored, presumably he would. But off course, I had hoped that the ball wouldn't go in our own goal. I will personally sign any statement that it isn't a good feeling to be on the scorers list with "own goal". But the pass from Newcastle was good, and my fault wasn't of the worst. Luckily I played fairly well. It would have been worse if I've played a bad match. Nevertheless, it was a good feeling when Andy made the 2-1 goal. When Newcastle had one man sent off, I knew that my goal wouldn't be decisive. There was a big difference between the two teams, and we deserved the win! The fact that Andy scored 4 beautiful goals, should have qualified him for the English international squad. England must have many great forwards since he's not a part of the squad. Now we're facing two international games. Luckily, the first is on Saturday. I've played 10 matches in August, and can still feel them. It's unbelievable that we in the first month of the season have that many games. But I don't complain. To play these matches is the best thing one can do. With football shoes. On the field. And I will much rather play than be on the bench watching. A couple of calm days now, and my batteries are filled up again, and I'll be ready for two important Euro2000 games (Greece and Slovenia). We haven't been played very good on home field so far (1-0 against Georgia as the best result). This we have to set straight . I think we'll have two good games. Most of our squad are doing well in their clubs, and we're hungry for success. Henning (the unlucky) 3/9/99 http://www.red11.org/mfc/berg.htm

Subject: Peter Schmeichel 3 - 2 Italy! Big Pete Scmikes helped Denmark go top of their Group and will now qualify for the play-offs in 2nd place if Italy get a result in their last match. After Italy went 2-0 up Denmark came back to win 3-2!!! Great news from Scandinavia! England? they now rely on Sweden to win against Poland?? KK should have used on form players like Andy Cole instead of half fit players like Owen. Just deserts 0-0. Fingers crossed Gary Neville recovers quickly from a groin strain. David Beckham seemed to get through the 90mins, no problems Over and out from Sunny Denmark Barrylee@post3.tele.dk Denmark http://www.red11.org/barry

If ever they are playing in your town
You must get to that football ground
Take a lesson come to see
          Football taught by Matt Busby
          Manchester, Manchester United
A bunch of bouncing Busby Babes
          They deserve to be knighted
