Ferguson was incensed after seeing Denis Irwin dismissed before the Merseysiders went on to score a late equaliser and dent his side's Premiership challenge, and claimed that Elleray had cost United the game. "We would have won the game had it not been for the referee," Ferguson said. "But we are not going to let him deny us winning the League." He added: "The referee handed it to them. It doesn't do our game any good to see things like that." But the Football Association are unlikely to act unless Elleray includes Ferguson's comments in his report which will reach the FA headquarters at Lancaster Gate on Friday.

Subject: Keane will give United added edge Wednesday, May 5, 1999 Manchester United are boosted by the return of Roy Keane who has completed a one-match ban and will once again face former team-mate Paul Ince in the Premiership match at Liverpool. United's injury list is shortening and Andy Cole should have recovered from an ankle injury to partner Dwight Yorke in attack. Jaap Stam is recovering from an Achilles tendon injury, while Ole Gunnar Solskjaer continues to have treatment for knee ligament damage. United manager Alex Ferguson said Ryan Giggs remained the biggest worry and the Welshman is still troubled by his left ankle. 'They've all trained and the only one who is a real doubt is Ryan Giggs,' said Ferguson. 'He wants to play and we will just have to see how he is.' Ferguson signed a new three-year contract yesterday which will make him the best-paid manager in Britain, earning £5million over the next three seasons - about £32,500 a week. Ferguson, 57, said: 'My hunger for success remains undiminished and I will be striving to ensure that the next three years are as successful as the last 13. I'm delighted that the matter has been settled and that I have a contract which will take me to 60 years of age.' At Liverpool, memories of the injury-time FA Cup defeat by United in January are still fresh in the mind of manager Gerard Houllier. He said: 'That was the turning point of our season. I didn't acknowledge it at the time, I didn't think it had that much effect. But it has affected our progress and was a big psychological blow. 'I felt we should have beaten them that day and I said after the match that we would do so one day, and that is our target now.' Liverpool have Patrik Berger in their squad after a lengthy spell out with a hamstring injury.

Subject: KEANE AND IRWIN 'THREATENED BY COMBAT 18' KEANE AND IRWIN 'THREATENED BY COMBAT 18' Manchester United stars Roy Keane and Denis Irwin were among several English-based players targeted in threats claimed to be from the far-right Combat 18 group. The threats - received at the Dublin city centre headquarters of the Football Association of Ireland - said the players should "go home to the Irish bogs". The move followed concern for Irish people in Britain following the spate of London bombings aimed at minority communities and groups. The FAI said that while the letter and two telephone calls they received could be part of a hoax, they had to be taken seriously. British and Irish police were told and the players, through their clubs in the FA Premiership and the Nationwide League's First Division, were informed of the development. FAI president Pat Quigley said a handwritten letter had been delivered to his organisation's offices, claiming to be from Combat 18, and there had also been "quite disturbing phone calls". He added: "We are taking it very seriously. The letter said life-threatening action would be taken against our players, and suggested all Irish players should go home to the bogs of Ireland. "This is very distressing and worrying for the FAI and disturbing for the players and their clubs. "These players are in England earning their living and entertaining thousands of supporters. "It is disturbing that they should be threatened for just doing their normal days' work."
Paul is now RED TV Masterfan 1999: Click on pic for details! Subject: Looking Ahead To Middlesbrough v Manchester United MIDDLESBROUGH v MANCHESTER UNITED PALLISTER IS TOP MAN FOR ROBSON Middlesbrough defender Gary Pallister goes into battle with the Premiership's most irresistible strike force with the endorsement of his manager ringing in his ears. The 33-year-old defender was a tower of strength in last Saturday's derby draw at Newcastle and is relishing the chance of a unique double over his old club. Manchester United arrive at the Riverside Stadium among other things seeking revenge for their only league defeat at Old Trafford, on December 19. Boro's win at the Theatre of Dreams - their first in 68 years - sparked something of a slump in form, but their recovery has carried them back into a comfortable top-half position. Pallister's form, despite a series of injury setbacks, has been a key factor, and Boro boss Bryan Robson is delighted at the return from his £2.5m investment last summer as the defender returned to his first club after a glory-packed nine years in the north-west. ''He's been excellent over the last month, but that's what you expect of Pally,'' said Robson. ''That's why I bought him. ''At this moment in time, Pally has won more medals than anybody at Manchester United - and that's a tremendous record to have. He's quick; he's great in the air, but he also reads the game very well - and that's a great strength to have as a defender. The knocks over the years will take their toll, and it maybe puts a little bit of a strain on other parts of your body. That's why you keep getting the niggly injuries which Pally's had this season. ''But I knew that when I bought him - and he's still done a fine job for us. He's looking forward to the game, but no more than any of the other boys. It's a big game for everybody. You've got reputations at stake, and Big Pally will be playing his normal game and trying to keep a clean sheet.'' Robson's own time at United has given him an invaluable insight into the thinking of former boss Alex Ferguson, and he knows that the Scot's players will have their minds firmly focused on the job at hand. ''United have had a great season, no matter what happens now,'' he said. ''Getting to the FA Cup Final, the Champions Cup Final and still being in with a shout of the league championship is a great year, no matter what happens. ''At this stage of the season, you've got to try to win every game. United know that and they've got quality players, so you know it's going to be a tough game. But it's good for our lads to finish off the season at home by entertaining our fans and trying to give them a good result. If you look at our last three league games with United, at the Riverside when we got relegated it was 2-2 and 3-3 at Old Trafford - and we beat them 3-2 there this season. ''They've been end-to-end games with plenty of good goals, and the way United are going to have to go for the game it could be a very similar game. There are not many teams go three league games on the belt without getting beaten against United, so hopefully we can make it four because that's a great record against a top club side.'' FERGUSON: 'WE HAVE THE MENTAL STRENGTH' Alex Ferguson has no doubts that his Manchester United players have the mental toughness to win their title tussle with Arsenal. The Gunners overhauled an 11-point deficit last season to claim the championship with two games to spare. Newcastle and Kevin Keegan were never the same when they lost the 1996 Premiership race to United in similar circumstances. But Ferguson claims his players are made of the right stuff. They have been involved in the last seven championship battles, and no side can match their experience. United will rely on that know-how as they attempt to overturn Arsenal's three-point lead in the final week of the campaign. ''There's no problem with our mental toughness - that's for sure,'' insisted Ferguson. ''Arsenal are a strong side too, and I think both teams can win all their remaining games. ''Most of our players have got the experience of being in this situation, and that does help. I think experience is always important. Although they are a young side, a lot of them have got tremendous experience from over the years - and that is a big help. There are plenty of things that we can say to them, but the important thing is their ability and belief.'' United can regain pole position in the Premiership if they beat Middlesbrough - the last side to defeat them back in December - at the Riverside Stadium. Both United and Arsenal would then have the same number of points with two games left to play. Arsenal are not in action until Tuesday when they face a difficult trip to Leeds. United then play Brian Kidd's Blackburn at Ewood Park on Wednesday, and Ferguson is predicting that the title could be decided on goal difference or even goals scored. At present, Arsenal have a one better goal difference than United - but Ferguson's side do have that game in hand at Blackburn. Ryan Giggs could return for the trip to the Riverside, where United clinched the title in 1996. The winger, who has been out since the FA Cup semi-final replay victory over Arsenal nearly a month ago with an ankle injury, came through a full training session on Friday and could be in contention. Giggs was due to train again yesterday, but Ferguson may decide to leave him for Wednesday's trip to Rovers. ''Ryan is coming along, and we're just having a look at him,'' said Ferguson. ''We have most of them fit and we don't have any real injuries from Wednesday's game at Liverpool, which is good news because that gives us a chance.''

Subject: Pallister poised for knee operation «« Middlesbrough manager Bryan Robson has confirmed that central defender Gary Pallister faces a knee operation in the summer The 33-year old former Manchester United stalwart has defied the discomfort of a troublesome knee injury of late, but has been ordered to go under the knife in a bid to cure the problem. The news will come as a blow to Robson, whose defensive resources have been ravaged by injuries to key players, namely Curtis Fleming, Colin Cooper, Gianluca Festa and Craig Harrison. Robson confirmed: "He'll need surgery. The knocks over the years take their toll and put a strain on the body. "I knew when I bought him it would happen, but he's still done a fine job for us."
Paul is now RED TV Masterfan 1999: Click on pic for details! Subject: Irwin in Wembley anguish after first sending-off 2 articles Irwin in Wembley anguish after first sending-off MANCHESTER, England, May 6 - Manchester United defender Denis Irwin, sent off for the first time in his 16-year career on Wednesday, has talked of his anguish at having to miss the F.A. Cup final against Newcastle United on May 22. The 33-year-old Irish international was dismissed in the 71st minute in the 2-2 draw with Liverpool for kicking the ball away after he chased it along the touchline in a bid to stop United conceding a throw in. He had been booked earlier for a foul on Steve McManaman in a match which cost United two valuable premier league points. "I haven't too many years left and not many Wembley appearances left, if any. This could have been my last chance, Irwin told the Manchester Evening News. He complained: "If it was out it was only just out. There was nothing in it and you have to keep on playing in a situation like that. "I didn't even boot the ball away after I played on. I just flicked it to Andy Cole to try and keep the move going." ---------------- IRWIN: REF RUINED MY WEMBLEY DREAM Denis Irwin insisted referee David Elleray was wrong to send him off for the first time in his career, denying the defender a possible last appearance at Wembley. The 33-year-old Manchester United full-back was dismissed after picking up two cautions against Liverpool at Anfield on Wednesday and will be suspended for the FA Cup Final. Irwin's only hope is that Elleray re-considers his decision after seeing a video of the match and cancels the second yellow card, handed out for kicking the ball away during the 2-2 draw that dented United's title hopes. Irwin, who has FA Cup winner's medals, said: "I haven't too many years left and that means not many Wembley appearances, if any. "This could have been my last chance, but it is not just about me missing the FA Cup Final, it is also the fact that we were down to 10 men at a delicate and crucial stage of the match. I'm disappointed that it left the lads battling on against 11 players." Elleray booked Irwin for a 61st minute foul on Steve McManaman then was shown a second yellow followed by a red card for kicking the ball away after the linesman had flagged for a throw-in. The Republic of Ireland left-back added: "I deserved the first booking because I mistimed my tackle, but it was touch and go whether the ball was in or out for the second. "What am I supposed to do? Do I stop because I think it might be over the line? I couldn't see the linesman's flag because he was behind me and I don't think there was a whistle from the referee. "If it was out, it was only just out. There was nothing in it and you have to keep on playing in a situation like that. I didn't even boot the ball away after I played on. I just flicked it to Andy Cole to try to keep the move going. "There had been players actually getting away with kicking the ball away and I could tell as soon as I turned round what was going to happen. I knew the consequences because beforehand the boss had told us. The referee also knew what the situation was. To be sent off for that is disappointing." Premier League referees' officer Philip Don has defended David Elleray for Irwin's dismissal. Don insists that Elleray was merely following the rules of the game at Anfield and does not believe that the match official should overturn the yellow card which will see Irwin suspended for the FA Cup final in two weeks. "David applied the laws of the game and, in my opinion, he had no alternative," Don said. "You cannot have common sense and consistency and the law is quite explicit on players who kick the ball away. "The whistle had gone and Denis (Irwin) played the ball twice and kicked it away. The law has been broken."
