Subject: KEANE OUT OF EUROPE - FERGUSON Sir Alex Ferguson has admitted that Manchester United will kick off their Champions' League campaign without skipper Roy Keane. The United boss is resigned to being without his influential midfielder following a hamstring injury that forced Keane to pull out of the Republic of Ireland squad for their European Championship qualifiers against Croatia and Malta. Ferguson believes Keane's injury is a "three-week job". He has ruled him out of next Saturday's Premiership clash with Liverpool at Anfield and said: "There has to be doubts about him for our first two games in the Champions League." United are due to play Croatia Zagreb at Old Trafford three days after the trip to Anfield then eight days later are away to Sturm Graz in Austria. If Keane is still not fit by then it would mean he will also miss the home game against Wimbledon which comes between the two European fixtures. Irish team-mate Denis Irwin is also likely to miss the Liverpool game with a recurrence of an Achilles tendon injury. But Ferguson says his injury is not as serious as Keane's and he expects him to be back in the squad for the start of the European campaign. © PA Sporting Life

Subject: Taibi to make Anfield debut for United Goalkeeper Massimo Taibi, Manchester United's latest signing, faces a baptism of fire when he makes his debut at Liverpool next week. Sir Alex Ferguson unveiled Taibi at lunchtime on Friday and revealed the 6ft 3in Italian will play at Anfield a week on Saturday. "I have no problems about that," said the United boss. "He played in the Milan derbies when he was with AC Milan and in the games against Juventus, so he'll be able to handle that pressure." The Sicilian has joined United from Serie A club Venezia for a fee believed to be in the region of £4.5million and he said: "I'm delighted to come to Manchester United, which is the biggest club in the world. "I couldn't believe it when I heard they had come in for me three or four weeks ago and when I flew to Manchester and saw Sir Alex Ferguson, the most famous coach in football, standing at the airport smiling and waiting to meet me, I realised I had made the right decision. "I'm very happy to have come to English football and I think there will be very little difference to playing in the Italian League. The Premiership and Serie A are very close nowadays." Taibi will compete for a place in the United goal with Mark Bosnich and Raimond van der Gouw. Ferguson said: "This is something new for us. Over the past few years it's just been a choice of one for most of the time when Peter Schmeichel was here. Now we have three keepers and that should breed healthy competition." United signed Bosnich from Aston Villa under the Bosman ruling during the summer but he is currently out of action with a hamstring strain. Meanwhile, United will kick off their defence of the Champions League title without captain Roy Keane. Ferguson is resigned to being without his influential midfielder after Keane pulled out of the Republic of Ireland's European Championship qualifiers against Croatia and Malta with a hamstring injury. Keane is set to miss the trip to Anfield and Ferguson said: "There have to be doubts about him for our first two games in the Champions League." United are due to play Croatia Zagreb at Old Trafford on September 14 before playing away to Sturm Graz eight days later. If Keane is still not fit by then it would mean he will also miss the home game against Wimbledon which comes between the two European fixtures. His international team-mate Denis Irwin is also likely to miss the Liverpool game with a recurrence of an Achilles tendon injury. However, Irwin's injury is not as serious as Keane's and he is expected to be back for the start of the Champions League campaign.

Subject: UNITED to rival Liverpool Silvestre bid Manchester United are set to make a rival bid to sign Inter Milan defender Mikael Silvestre, who is close to a move to Liverpool. Sources close to the Old Trafford club revealed on Friday that United boss Alex Ferguson is said to be ready to make an offer to try and snatch the left-sided defender from under the noses of rivals Liverpool. Inter Milan are not in European competition this season, therefore there would be no deadline for United to meet in signing the young Frenchman. We await developments.

Subject: Giggs backs Hughes for permanent job Ryan Giggs believes his former Manchester Utd teammate Mark Hughes should be handed the Wales manager's job on a permanent basis. Hughes has been given temporary command for the remaining two games of the Euro 2000 qualifiers, but Giggs believes that if Hughes is installed on a full-time basis, he can restore the pride back in Welsh soccer. Giggs, who will win his 25th cap when Wales take on Belarus in Minsk on Saturday, said: "The main thing about Sparky is that he's always been a winner. You can see that in the teams he has played in and the important goals he has scored. "Everyone knows the qualities he has got, hopefully he can take that on now to being a top manager. I would like him to get the job permanently, not just for these two games."
