While the Manchester United captain was on the final leg of the Reds' return from Japan last night with the World Champion's crown, his solicitor Michael Kennedy and Old Trafford solicitor and director Maurice Watkins had begun new discussions. The pendulum in the Irishman's long-running contract saga has been swinging wildly in the past week with Keane's every word now being analysed for hidden meaning and a clue to the eventual decision on his Old Trafford future. Today there was no hint of the outcome with the Keane camp saying only "Hopefully there will be some news within a few days.'' Last week the 28-year-old revealed that fresh dialogue was on the agenda for this week and, when asked if the news would be welcomed by United fans, Keane replied: "Hopefully, yes.'' For full story see tonight's Manchester Evening News.
Click for the latest sound interviews from OT Keane deal close to finalisation Speculation is rising that the deal to keep Roy Keane at Manchester United has been completed, apart from the smallest formalities. Reports coming from Ireland claim Keane has agreed a new pay deal and is ready to accept United's offer, and the only hold up is settlement over a signing on fee and guarantee of a testimonial in three years time. Neither Keane's solicitor Michael Kennedy, nor the club will comment about the situation at present, other than to confirm that there will be more talks next week following the latest round two days ago. Last week Keane said he was hopeful something positive would come out of the negotiations, but on Tuesday caused confusion when he told reporters it would be a wrench when he leaves Old Trafford. This was interpreted in some quarters as confirmation that he was on his way, but if the latest claims prove correct it would seem this was nothing more than a smoke screen.
Click to vote in this week's survey! Man Utd's help sought Barnsley have asked Manchester United for permission to play on-loan defender John Curtis in the FA Cup next week. Barnsley's defensive resources are stretched and Dave Bassett is hoping that Sir Alex Ferguson will help him out by allowing Curtis to appear in the third round clash with Wimbledon. The fact that United are not involved in the competition this season should hopefully work in Barnsley's favour. Bassett and Ferguson get on well and that could also count for something. After being sacked as manager of Nottingham Forest last season, Bassett was employed as United's European scout. Curtis is in the middle of a month's loan at Oakwell and he has impressed in his short time at the club.
Click to vote in this week's survey! Murray tried to buy United Graeme Souness has confirmed David Murray tried to buy Manchester United and he was to replace Sir Alex Ferguson if it had happened. In Souness's new book, he claimed Murray was backing Michael Knighton to the tune of £10 million, but the deal eventually fell through. Souness claimed he was to take over from Ferguson with Walter Smith staying at Ibrox to manager Rangers. Knighton had agreed to buy out Martin Edwards for £10 million, and Murray was the man to broker the deal, but the Rangers chairman had second thoughts the next day and it all fell though. Now what a mistake that was considering what United are worth now.
Click for the latest pics from OT Cruyff slams leaving rumours Manchester United's Jordi Cruyff has slammed reports which claimed he had announced he was leaving Old Trafford next summer on a free transfer. Cruyff says he has no idea where last weekend's reports came from adding: "I don't understand how I can be quoted because I haven't been speaking to anybody. What it means is I haven't said anything and reports that put words in my mouth are not credible. "I will just take everything as it comes I don't know what my future is, obviously I can imagine where I am, and where I am not going to be next year, but that is a different thing. This season is what I am concentrating on and I don't know what is happening and I don't understand how somebody came up with this story." Last winter, Cruyff went on loan to Spanish club Celta Vigo when the transfer window opened in December, and no doubt will be looking for a similar opportunity to move back between now and mid January when mid-season dealing has to stop.

Andy Cole missed the trip to Tokyo because of a back injury but is ready for action again. Henning Berg, Raimond van der Gouw, and Jordi Cruyff also missed the trip to Japan and could come into contention if Ferguson feels any of his regulars have been affected by the 14-hour return journey.
