Peter Schmeichel's last season at OT" Click on image for more!" Subject: Boro order an undiluted Ricard for Old Trafford By Jason Tomas Sunday January 3, 1999 Hamilton Ricard, one of Middlesbrough's scoring heroes when they recently gained their first win at Manchester United in 68 years, will be under pressure to produce a repeat performance in Sunday's FA Cup tie at Old Trafford. The 24-year-old Colombian striker has scored 13 goals this season. But as only two have come in the last 10 matches, Boro manager Bryan Robson has warned that he could lose his place to Mikkel Beck. 'When he's getting into the positions, he's got to put the ball in the back of the net,' Robson said. 'Beck is champing at the bit to get into the first team. He showed a lot of enthusiasm in the second half against Derby and got himself a goal. I'm just reminding Hamilton that he's got competition. He's at the top of the charts, but he's got to keep it going if he wants to stay in the team.' Boro's need for Ricard to be at his best for today's match became more pronounced yesterday. Having already lost their services of their Italian defender, Gianluca Festa, through suspension, their fitness assessment on their trio of injured players - Paul Gascoigne, Gary Pallister and Robbie Mustoe - was that all three had no more than a 50-50 chance of being available. For United, the absence of David Beckham and Gary Neville will be offset by the return of their leading scorer, Dwight Yorke, who has missed all but an hour of their last five Premiership matches because of a groin strain. With Yorke rejoining Andy Cole in the United attack, it seems likely that Paul Scholes will drop into midfield to partner Roy Keane, Nicky Butt and Ryan Giggs. However, there is speculation that Alex Ferguson will spring a surprise by bringing in teenager Jonathan Greening for his FA Cup debut. Greening, United's reserve striker, can also operate in Beckham's spot on the right flank Liverpool, at Port Vale, will have captain Paul Ince available after a one-match ban. Manager Gerard Houllier also has the advantage of having had his card marked on Port Vale by fellow countryman Arsene Wenger, whose Arsenal team came close to falling to the First Division side in last season's FA Cup. 'I have spoken to Arsene and he has told me that it is very hard to play your football at Port Vale, very tough indeed,' Houllier said. 'This is a potential banana skin for us.' As for Liverpool's improved results recently, he said: 'I'm not getting carried away. We have only gone about 20 per cent of the way towards what I want. We have to produce more work and discipline and show more strength in certain situations. I'm not pleased with the way we open in games.' Sheffield Wednesday's only injury doubt for the clash with Norwich concerns striker Andy Booth, who is striving to overcome an ankle injury. However, Wednesday have already suffered one humiliation this season in being bundled out of the Worthington Cup by Third Division Cambridge. Their hopes of a good FA Cup run have hardly been enhanced recently by three successive Premiership defeats. Their Brazilian defender, Emerson, said: 'This Norwich game is now a very big one for us and as we are also playing at home, it's vital that we win to turn things around again.' One player who could do much to help Wednesday achieve this is midfielder Danny Sonner, who was bought from Ipswich for £75,000 in October. Sonner doesn't score many goals, but when he does they are often out of the top drawer. The one he recalls with particular fondness was a spectacular 25-yard volley during a league match for Ipswich - against Norwich.

Subject: SHERINGHAM MAKES WAY AGAIN Teddy Sheringham will step out of the Old Trafford spotlight again tomorrow as Dwight Yorke claims back his place in the Manchester United front line in the FA Cup third-round clash against Middlesbrough. England striker Sheringham has earned the praise of manager Alex Ferguson but still finds himself surplus to requirements as he goes back to the substitutes' bench. Yorke returns after missing all but an hour of the last five games, while Sheringham can console himself with the praise of Ferguson for his efforts during the record signing's absence. "Teddy has done remarkably well, and I feel for him," said the Old Trafford boss. "He has done nothing wrong - in fact he turned the course of the game against Chelsea last Tuesday." But Ferguson is eager to see the Yorke-Andy Cole partnership operating again. Seventeen of the 22 goals the duo have scored have come since they were brought together by Ferguson on October 3, and the boss is keen to give them the chance of playing together again. United go into tomorrow's game looking to avenge the shock Premiership defeat by Bryan Robson's side a fortnight ago. Yorke missed that game as did Dutch defender Jaap Stam. Both play tomorrow, while David Beckham and Gary Neville drop from the squad to serve a one-match suspension each. © PA Sporting Life

Both play today, while David Beckham and Gary Neville drop from the squad to serve a one-match suspension each. Boro defender Dean Gordon is confident lightning can strike twice to send Manchester United tumbling out of the FA Cup at the first hurdle. Boro travel to Old Trafford just a fortnight after clinching their first league win there in 68 years, and the 25-year-old former Crystal Palace player believes that a repeat is by no means an impossibility. ''A couple of weeks ago, we went to Manchester United and against all the odds won 3-2,'' he said. ''This time, I think it's going to be a different game. They've got a couple of players missing, and we could have a couple missing. But we'll be going there in a positive frame of mind and hopefully we can come away with the same result. As long as we show the same commitment as we did in the last game, hopefully things can go as well.'' Gordon admits that the third round draw could hardly have handed Boro a tougher test but he and his teammates are ready to meet the challenge of Alex Ferguson's side head-on. ''When the draw came out it was probably the worst draw we could have had,'' he said. ''But if you want to win the cup you've got to beat the best - and there would be nothing better than beating Manchester United at Old Trafford. To me, it's just another away game. It's Manchester United and it's intimidating, but when you go to places like that you can't give them too much respect. If you do that, you stand off and let them play. When we went there the last time we pressured them quite a lot and did quite well. We scored three goals - but this time around it's going to be more difficult.'' Gordon was on the scoresheet with a spectacular volley, his second piledriver of the season, as Boro raced into a 3-0 lead a fortnight ago. ''I never seem to score tap-ins,'' he said. ''I always like a little pop from long range and I've scored two quite good goals this season. Hopefully, I can score a few more.''
Peter Schmeichel's last season at OT" Click on image for more!" Subject: Bitter Bosnich bid from United? «« Manchester United manager Alex Ferguson will be monitoring the situation at Aston Villa over the next couple of days, where boss John Gregory has given up hope of persuading Mark Bosnich to stay. The Australian's contract expires in the summer and, under the Bosman ruling, he can open contract talks with other clubs from today. United know all about the player, who is rumoured to be wanted by Roma, having coached him at Old Trafford as a youngster before he left for Villa - via Australia - under a cloud. It was how that deal was done which could scupper his chances of a return. Bosnich had been refused a work permit after ending his studies at Manchester Polytechnic and returned Down Under. He did not tell United he was about to marry his English fiancee but ex-boss Ron Atkinson was made aware and soon signed the player - with no further permit problems. Ferguson is looking for the man to take over from Peter Schmeichel next season and a fully fit Bosnich would fit the bill perfectly - but the boss would have to bury the hatchet first. Meanwhile, Schmeichel is staying tight lipped about speculation he might be joining Italian club Udinese - the Serie A side could offer him £2 million over a two year deal. The Great Dane is refusing to speak to the English media over his future.
Peter Schmeichel's last season at OT" Click on image for more!" Subject: LEBOEUF AND BECKHAM MAKE UP Chelsea defender Frank Leboeuf has confirmed he and Manchester United's David Beckham have ended their feud. The players, who clashed on and off the field during 1998, shook hands after Chelsea's Stamford Bridge showdown with United last Tuesday. "A new year has begun, so it was probably as good a time as any for David Beckham and me to start afresh and bury the past. I shook hands with him in the tunnel after our match on Tuesday to, hopefully, put an end to what has been built up into a feud. "The whole point of seeing Beckham at the end of the game was to look forward to a happy future, but the funniest thing was that Gianluca Vialli, my manager at Chelsea, assumed that we were about to have another argument. "Luca was relieved and maybe a little surprised when I just shook Beckham by the hand and said that we should forget what happened last year when a few unpleasant words were exchanged," Leboeuf told The Times. He also admitted that he was lucky not to be red-carded during the match for a foul on Beckham. "I probably should have been sent off for a foul on him. I made a mistake when he Beckham ran across me and when the referee called me over I thought he was going to show me the red card." © PA Sporting Life
