MUFC YOUNG GUNS
Thousands, if not millions, of words have been written about United's
established stars such as Giggs and Cantona. What is not so well documented
are details of the up and coming players. The following information has been
drawn from a number of sources to hopefully fill that gap.
MICHAEL APPLETON
A young player from Salford who joined United as a trainee in July 1992 and
signed as a professional in July 1994. He was loaned to Wimbledon during the
summer to play in the Inter-Toto Cup and received excellent reports on his
performances. Loaned to Lincoln City in September 1995.
DES BAKER
Born in Dublin, he joined United as a trainee in July 1993 and signed as a
professional in August 1994. A Schoolboy International, he was a member of
the FA Youth Cup winning side last season.
DAVID BECKHAM
Born in Leytonstone, London, David is another product of the trainee scheme
at Old Trafford and a member of the 1992 FA Youth Cup winning team. He made
his first team debut against Brighton in the Coca Cola Cup in 1992. Another
England Youth International, he made a big impact by scoring against
Galatasaray in last season's European Cup. He played for England's Under 21
side in Toulon during last summer.
GRANT BREBNER
Born in Edinburgh, Scotland, Grant joined United as a trainee in January
1994 and turned pro during the summer of 1995. A 'B' team regular last
season, he played in the second leg of the 1995 FA Youth Cup final at Old
Trafford.
NICKY BUTT
Born in Manchester, Nicky has represented England at Schoolboy, Under 18,
and Under 21 levels. He is one of the most promising midfield players in the
country. He joined United as a trainee before signing professional forms in
January 1993. He made his first team debut against Oldham in 1992 and became
a regular last season.
CHRIS CASPER
Son of former Burnley player, Frank, Chris was born in Burnley. He joined
United as a trainee in 1991 and signed professional in January 1993. He has
captained the England Youth team and was a member of their European
Championship winning side in 1993 and the England Under 21 side in Toulon
last summer. Made his United debut in the Coca Cola Cup tie against Port
Vale at Old Trafford in October 1994. Currently on loan to Bournemouth.
MICHAEL CLEGG
Born in Ashton-under-Lyne, Greater Manchester, he has completed his second
year as a trainee and signed professional in July 1995. He played in the
first leg of the 1995 FA Youth Cup Final against Tottenham Hotspur.
TERRY COOKE
Voted United's Young Player of the Year last season, his last minute goal
against Tottenham in the FA Youth Cup Final took the game into extra time.
He then took the decisive kick in the penalty shoot-out which brought the
Cup back to Old Trafford. He was an ever present in the England Under 18
team last season. Born in Marston Green, West Midlands. Made his first team
debut against Bolton at Old Trafford on 16th September 1995 and scored his
first goal against York City in the Coca Cola Cup. Went on loan to
Sunderland in January 1996.
SIMON DAVIES
Born in Middlewich, Cheshire. A very skilful midfielder/winger whom manager
Alan Ball rated in the highest order when he was on loan at Exeter City in
1993/94. He joined United as a trainee in 1990 and signed professional terms
in 1992. A former Youth Team captain and member of the 1992 FA Youth Cup
winning team, he made 10 first team appearances last season.

and was in goal for both legs of the FA Youth Cup Final last May. Signed as

small fee in 1992. He has represented his country at all levels and is now a

in July 1992. A member of the 1993 FA Youth Cup finalists, he made just four
appearances with the 'A' team and one with the 'B' team in season 1993/94
and didn't play at all last season. Sorry, I've no idea why.

and turned pro during the summer of 1995. A 'B' team regular last season, he
played in both legs of the FA Youth Final.

Parker, was rapid. Regular first team football, an excellent FA Cup Final
performance and culminating in full England caps against Japan and Brazil. A
natural right back, he proved his versatility when he moved to centre half
in the Cup Final.

a finalist the following year. He made his first team debut as a substitute
for Gary Neville in the Coca Cola Cup at Port Vale last season.
KEVIN PILKINGTON
Born in Hitchin (near London), he joined United as a professional in 1992
after being part of the FA Youth Cup winning side. He has represented
England schools at Under 18 level. He was a regular with the reserves last
season and was on the bench for the first team on a number of occasions
including the Crystal Palace game at Old Trafford where injury to Peter
Schmeichel gave Kevin his first team debut. Last season's Reserve Team
Player of the Year, with the departure of Gary Walsh to Middlesborough, he
becam the recognised number 2 'keeper at United until the arrival of Tony
Coton. Currently on loan to Rochdale.

debut at Ipswich last season as a substitute for Lee Sharpe and scored 12
minutes later! In total he scored 5 league and 2 cup goals last season.

pro during the summer of 1995. A 'B' team regular last season making 20

last season and his progress was rewarded with a professional contract this
summer. Born in Rotherham, Yorkshire.
BEN THORNLEY
Born in Bury, Lancashire, Ben was a member of the winning FA Youth Cup team
of 1992 and a runner-up the following year. An exceptionally promising
forward who suffered a serious injury at the end of the 1993/94 season
causing him to miss all of last season. Another who signed professional in
January 1993, he made his first team debut at West Ham in February 1994,
coming on as a late substitute for Denis Irwin in the 2-2 draw. Went on loan
to Stockport County in October 1995.

TICKET AVAILABILITY
With the development of the new North Stand, admission to Old Trafford
should be less of a problem in 1996/97. Members may apply for tickets 5
weeks before the date of the game. Non-members are advised to keep in touch
with the 24 hour Ticket and Match Information Service but tickets for recent
games have been going on general sale.
Overseas supporters should write for tickets to Old Trafford giving as much
prior notice as possible. With the increased capacity now available, there
should not be too much of a problem obtaining tickets for all but the
biggest games. I believe that you can collect and pay for your tickets on
the day of the game but check this with the ticket office.
Ticket touts operate along Sir Matt Busby Way and generally ask 50 to 100
pounds sterling depending upon the opposition. Close to kick-off time, they
will accept 30 to 50 pounds sterling. Fortunately, there are still a few
genuine fans who will sell any spare tickets they have at face value. Best
of luck!
Tickets for away games are generally only available to Season Ticket holders
only. Details, as available, are announced on the 24 hour Ticket and Match
Information Service.
Tickets are not required for reserve team games. Members can gain free
admission and non-members pay Stlg. 2.00 for adults, 1.00 for children.
Crowds are usually 3-4,000.
Admission to Youth Cup games at Old Trafford is Stlg. 2.00 for adults and
1.00 for children.
Crowds are usually 2-3,000 but reach 20-30,000 for a final!
MUSEUM AND TOUR CENTRE
The Manchester United museum was officially opened in 1986 by the mother of
Duncan Edwards. Its popularity has rapidly grown to the extent that it now
has more visitors than Wembley Stadium! The museum traces the entire history

INDEPENDENT MANCHESTER UNITED SUPPORTERS ASSOCIATION
IMUSA was formed in 1995 to provide a vehicle whereby the ordinary fan
canmake his or her voice heard by the club. They are also attempting to
build up dialogue with the club so that the fans are kept in touch with events.
IMUSA have stated their demands to be
i) Price rises to be in line with inflation - No rise for 1996/97
ii) Encourage more local fans into Old Trafford with cheaper seats
iii) Recreate the old atmosphere - unreserved seats behind each goal
iv) Less restrictions on European travel
v) A fairer distribution of away match tickets
vi) A constructive dialogue between Board and fans
If anyone is interested in joining IMUSA or would like more details then

FANZINES
Fanzines are magazines writen by, and for, the fans. They are totally
unofficial and are an outlet for the fans to voice their opinions. Needless
to say, they are not sold in the souvenir shops but are on sale outside the
ground on match days. United have two well established fanzines which are
available by subscription. They both welcome contributions written by
supporters. Journalistic talent is not required!

MANCHESTER UNITED RADIO
Manchester United Radio broadcasts on 1413 KHz on the medium wave on
matchdays only from 4 hours before kick-off to an hour or so after the game.
The signal strength is very low and can only be picked up in a 4 or 5 mile
radius of the ground. This is due to government broadcasting restrictions.
Other local radio frequencies are Piccadilly Radio on 1152 KHz and Greater
Manchester Radio on 95.1 MHz. BBC Radio 5 broadcasts nationally on 909KHz
(or 693KHz in certain areas).
OTHER INFORMATION
Date formed : 1878 as Newton Heath LYR (Lancashire and Yorkshire Railway)
1890 LYR suffix dropped as support from railway company ended
1902 became Manchester United after Newton Heath bankruptcy
Size of Old Trafford pitch : 116 x 76 yards
Kit colours : 'Home' - Red shirts, White shorts, Black socks
'Away' - Light Grey shirts, Dark Grey shorts, Dark Grey socks
'3rd' - Blue/White striped shirts, Blue shorts, Blue socks
The 'Away' kit is not used at all away games but only where there is a
colour clash e.g. Liverpool. At away games where the opposition wear white
shorts, United may change to black shorts. The third kit was used where both
the 'home' and 'away' kits clashed with either the opposition or the
referee. Since the 'away' kit no longer clashes with anyone else, the only
reasons for wearing the third kit are probably commercial.
What was an LMTB?
LMTB stood for League Match Ticket Book and was for all practical purposes
the same as a season ticket. They no longer exist and all books issued are
now called season tickets.
How do I get a merchandising catalogue?
Write, phone, or fax the merchandising dept at Old Trafford requesting a
catalogue. Although goods can be ordered by credit card, overseas supporters
should be aware of the high shipping charges made.
Europe - One item : Stlg. 5.00. More than one item : Stlg. 14.00
Rest of the World - Stlg. 35.00 per order or subject to weight if greater
How do I get to Old Trafford?
Bus - Buses leave Chorlton Street in central Manchester direct to the
ground. Other areas of Manchester also have routes to Old Trafford.
Car - Leave the M63 at junction 7 and take the A56 towards Manchester.
Train - Special trains run from Oxford Road station in central Manchester
direct to the ground.
Tram - The Metrolink line between Altrincham and Bury runs through central
Manchester and there is a station at Old Trafford.
Can I watch United training?
Supporters are usually allowed into The Cliff to watch the players train.
On most days, training starts at about 10.00 and lasts until about 12.30.
The players often drive over to Littleton Road (half a mile away) and do the
training there. Although there are usually only 20 or 30 people watching,
during school holidays the figure is more like 400 or 500. Players do not
normally train on the day of a game.
Most players (and especially Eric Cantona and Brian McClair) are happy to
spend some time with the fans after training to allow them to get autographs
and take photos.
How do I write to the players?
Write c/o MUFC, Old Trafford. A signed photo is usually sent if asked for
but you may have a long wait if you write to the most popular players.
Who or what is Fred the Red?
Fred the Red is the official mascot of Manchester United and is an
anthropomorphic(!) representation of a red devil dressed in a United kit who
appears before the kick-off and at half time at home games. He made his
debut at the final game of the 1993/94 season against Coventry where he got
lynched by the players! Although a source of considerable embarrassment to
anyone over the age of puberty, he is very popular with the kids and
generates considerable revenue via merchandising.
What is Manchester United plc?
Manchester United plc (public limited company) is the company formed in July
1991 to enable United to be a company quoted on the London Stock Exchange.
Chairman of the plc is Professor Sir Roland Smith, former Chairman of
British Aerospace. Principal shareholders (as of October 1995) are

United's current sucess has boosted the end of season share price to 340p.
