As understudy for the wing-haf berths so capably filled by Stiles and Crerand,Fitzpatrick`s opportunities were extremely limited although his crunching tackles and highly competitive attitude were in a similar vein to those already in possesion. When he finally broke through into League football on a regular basis it was in the right full-back position, where the lank-haired destroyer suceeded the long-serving Shay Brennan. Throughout his career Fitzpatrick was plagued by cartilage trouble, two operations retarded his progress. He played just one 1st team game in 71-2, and reappeared 12 months later managed to complete only another handful. Later in the same season he was advised to retire from the game, aged only 26, due to an arthritic condition in his knee joints. He returned to his home town, Aberdeen, and went into business as a wine importer. NOTE: John Fitzpatrick was UNITED`s first ever substitute, versus Tottenham at White Hart Lane on 16th Oct 65 when he replaced Denis Law during a 5-1 defeat.
