There was never much doubt that Mike
Duxbury was destind for a footballing
career, but his starting point was
initially uncertain. He was a trialist
with Everton, Liverpool, Arsenal and
Leeds before UNITED signed himon schoolboy forms in May 75. He began as a
forward in schools football but represented Lancashire Schoolboys as a
midfield player. When he finally graduated into league football after 5
patient years at OT his versatility was still very much in evidence, as
he filled any number of roles with equal determination, resilience, and
no little skill. In season 82-3 he took over at right back from John
Gidman and appeared in all 42 matches during the League Campaign.
With his neat tackling and distribution skills, it looked his most
comfortable position but he still eventually returned to a broader
utility role. Capped 7 times by England U-21, Duxbury became a full time
International in Nov 83 and won ten caps within the space of 11 months as
England`s right full-back.
He was an FA Cup winner in 83 and 85, and a League Cup finalist in 83. A
knee injury restricted him in 88-9, and at the close of the following
term Mike`s loyalty was rewarded when he was granted a free transfer. He
joined Blackburn, but moved on to Bradford City where he joined up with
Frank Stapleton then the Valley Parade club`s player-manager.
