Pat Crerand moved out of the shipyards to take up a footballing career and
he first came into Celtic`s team in Oct 58. A craggy, strong-tackling wing
half-back, he became an outstanding performer in international football. In
the Scotland jersey his sterling defensive work proved the perfect foil for
the move adventurous role so skilfully exploited by Jim Baxter, the Glasgow
Rangers half-back.

Crerand cost United a 56.000 pounds fee in Feb 63, and three months later he
appeared at Wembley, giving an immaculate display against Leicester City in
United`s FA Cup triumph. Extremely hard working Crerand was usually to be
found where the action was thickest. He was also a fine springboard for
counter attacks, always likely to catch opponents unawares by the accuracy
and vision of his long-ball passing. Crerand lacked pace and aerial ability
and did not really score enough goals. A touchy temper was also a part of
his exuberant character but all this was more than compensated for by his
fierce loyalty to the cause and extraordinary ability to orchestrate skills.
At international level he won 16 full caps, played once for Scotland u23
and represented the Scottish League on seven occasions. With Celtic, he was
a Scottish Cup finalist in 1961.

With UNITED in addition to his FA Cup medal in 63, he won League
Championships in 1965 & 1967 and was a European Cup winner in 1968. Since
leaving the game, Pat Crerand has worked as a Public Relations Officer for a
Manchester Engineering company, and latterly as a licensee in Altrincham.
His son Danny played a few times as an amateur for Rochdale in 87-88.
