Eddie Colman was selected to play for Salford Boys whilst at Ordsall School, and he also won County Schoolboys honours. A local lad he was an instant success in UNITED's Youth Team, who won the FA YOUTH CUP for three successive seasons between 1952 and 1955. His League baptism came shortly after his 19th birthday, when he was serving as a Signalman at Catterick Army Camp. He took his chance so confidently that he retained the first-team right half-back berth from then onwards.

An integral part of Matt Busby's magnificent 'Babes', he struck up an irresistable understanding with the superb Duncan Edwards and won a League Championship medal in his debut season, another one in 1957, and was a member of the FA CUP final team which lost to Aston Villa in the same year.
For what Eddie Colman lacked in physique, he more than compensated by his perky, whole-hearted approach, ball winning skills, and creative ability. His dazzling dribbles and deceptive body swerve earned him the nickname 'Snake-hips' from the appreciative Old trafford crowd who also loved his boundless energy and ability to thread through the most deft and delicate of passes.
He was only 21 years old when he was killed in the Munich air crash, and his cruel demise deprived UNITED, and the football worl in general, of a great prospect who would surely have touched the very pinnacle of achievments available in the game.
