Voted Scottish Player of the Year in 71, he won the first oh his 34 Scottish Caps in the same year. He had made a total of 188 appearances when UNITED boss Frank O`Farrell pais 125.000 pounds fot his signature in March 72- surely one of UNITEDS best ever buys. He was to spend over 11 years at OT, six years as club captain when he set the very highest standards, led by example, and was always the first name on the team-sheet. He played in UNITED`s three FA Cup Finals during the 70`s, collecting a winners medal against Liverpool in 77 when he magnificently blotted the menace of Kevin Keegan. He won a Second Div Championship medal in 75 as UNITED wisely rebuilt around him after shock relegation. One of the coolest and classiest defenders of his era, Buchan combined an acute positional sense and simple distribution with a searing turn of pace which gave him extraordinary powers of recovery. Increasingly troubled by injuries he left OT to join Oldham on a free transfer in August 83. He played a vital part in the Latics battle for Second Div survival in the same season. after only four games of 84-5, however, a persistent thigh injury caused him to announce retirement. He had a brief spell in management with Burnley, quickly realising that it was not a job he was suited for. He subsequently worked as an area manager for a large sportswear company.
