Garry Birtles cost Nottingham Forest 2000 pounds in Dec 76. some four years
later,UNITED boss Dave Sexton paid 1.25 million for the bearded striker who
was renowned for his bustling style and piercing runs on goal. Capped by
England at U21 and B level, he won three full caps, first appearing in May
80 against Argentina. He won European Cup-winner`s medals with Forest in 79
and 80. On the domestic front he was Football League Cup winner in 79 and
finalist in 80.

At the time of his move to MANCHESTER he had scored 51 goals in 131 games,
and had developed into a really useful player who seemed poised to graduate
to an outstanding career at OT. It was not to be. In 25 appearances for
UNITED in 80-81 he failed to score, confidence punctured, Garry looked
increasingly ill at ease with his front partner Joe Jordan. Under new
manager Ron Atkinson and with a new striking partner in Frank Stapleton,
81-82 season initially appeared more promising. He was probably relieved,
however to end two years of toil and to rejoin forest - for a cut price
250.000 pounds - in Sept 82.

He left the City Ground for the last time in June 87, crossing the River
trent to join Notts County. His league career ended at Grimsby where he
successfully switched into a central defensive role.
