September 26 1956;  Manchester United 10 Anderlecht 0

Manchester United's home debut in Europe at Maine Road. "One of the most perfect exhibitions of football my side has ever given," said Matt Busby. Inspired by David Pegg, who set up eight goals, including four for Dennis Viollet and a hat-trick for Tommy Taylor.

February 6 1957;  Manchester United 3 Athletic Bilbao 0

The first of United's great comebacks after losing 5-3 in Spain. Viollet, Johnny Berry and, in the final seconds, Taylor squeezed United through to a semi-final which they lost to the great Real Madrid.

February 5 1958;   Red Star 3 Manchester United 3

The game in Yugoslavia before the ill-fated flight 24 hours later which never left the runway at Munich, leaving the flower of Matt Busby's team in the wreckage.

December 10 1963;  Manchester United 4 Tottenham 1

Trailing 2-0 to the great Spurs side of Dave Mackay and Danny Blanchflower in the second round of the Cup Winners' Cup, United steamrollered the Londoners in the return, David Herd and Bobby Charlton both scoring twice.

March 9 1966;    Benfica 1 Manchester United 5

United's finest performance on foreign soil. Only one goal to the good from the European Cup second round first leg, they slaughtered the Eagles, a possessed Best scoring twice, while John Connolly, Paddy Crerand and Bobby Charlton completed the rout of the Portuguese champions.

May 29 1968;    Manchester United 4 Benfica 1

United became the first English club to be crowned champions of Europe, fittingly at Wembley on a night dominated by George Best and Bobby Charlton, while Denis Law watched from his hospital bed. After it was 1-1 at full-time (Charlton header), Best, Brian Kidd and Charlton again completed an emotional night.

May 15 1968;    Real Madrid 3 Manchester United 3

Defending a 1-0 lead from the first leg, United were on their way out when 3-1 down at half-time but fought back to clinch a place in the final with goals from David Sadler and Bill Foulkes' late header.

March 21 1984;    Manchester United 3 Barcelona 0

United looked on their way out of the Cup Winners' Cup after Diego Maradona's Spaniards took a 2-0 lead in the third round first leg. But England skipper Bryan Robson was inspired, scoring twice and Frank Stapleton getting the other as 58,547 roared United through, only to lose to Juventus in the semi-finals.

May 15 1991;    Barcelona 1 Manchester United 2

Alex Ferguson guided United to their first European trophy for 23 years in the Rotterdam final of the Cup Winners' Cup, Mark Hughes scoring two superb second half goals defended against Ronald Koeman's late consolation for the Spaniards.

March 5 1997:   Manchester United 4 Porto 0

"A performance to match Barcelona in 1984", said chairman Martin Edwards after the previously all-conquering Portuguese were hammered into the ground.

October 1, 1997: Manchester United 3 Juventus 2

United hit back from conceding a goal after just 24 seconds of this European Champions' League match, going 3-1 up through Teddy Sheringham, Paul Scholes and Giggs. A last-gasp free kick by the Italians merely gave the scoreline respectability.
