Born in Nottingham of west Indian parents,Viv Anderson actually spent a
school holiday at OT for coaching but was not taken on. He evt. became
professional with Notts Forest in Aug 74,after serving apprenticeship at the
City ground. He became the first black player to appear in League football
for Forest, and in 1978 collected the first of 30 full caps for England.

Always a supremely fit athlete, whose smooth overlaps often supported the
attack,he appeared in ten seasons of League football with Forest and the
tall, skilful defender was an outstanding figure in a decade of
success,winning a League championship medal in 1978,European Cup winner`s
cup medals in 1979 and 80,Football League Cup Winner`s medals in 78 and 79
and a finalist in 80. He was transferred to Arsenal for 250.000 pounds in
July 84 where he made 120 League appearances for the Gunners and won the
League Cup Winner`s medal in 87.

Alex Ferguson admired his combative qualities and Viv was signed by UNITED
in May 87. His 250.000 pound fee was fixed by tribunal and, although past
30, he came close to adding to his medal collection in his first season at
OT, when United were runners up for the League. He was similarly ubfortunate
in 89-90 when he missed out on a place in the semi-final of the FA Cup,
after he had appeared in all previous rounds.

Limited first team opportunities led to his free transfer to Sheff Wed in
Jan 91,and he assisted them to win promotion to Div 1 in his first season at
Hillsborough. In 93 he was a finalist in both FLC and FAC,Wednesday twice
losing out to Arsenal who became the first club to win both competitions in
the same season.
After a year in charge at Barnsley,Viv renewed his United
connections joining former team mate Bryan Robson as his number two at
Middlesborough.
